Thx. We will be in Hakone Dec 24 and spend a night there and come back. It might be easlier get to buy a Hakone Freepass at Shinjuku station, and buy Romance Car tickets there too, instead of trying to figure out online.

If you have purchased Romance car ticket =a limited express ticket in advance on the website, you can take the your reserved Romance car by simply touching your Suica at the ticket gate. The Romance car ticket and fare are separate, and a Romance car surcharge and fare are required to take the Romance car your booked. If you have Suica card, you can enter the platform. When you enter the platform with Suica and Romance car ticket, you can ride the limited express. The entry gate machines check Suica card only. If you have not Romance car ticket yet when you enter platform, you can buy the limited express ticket at the platform. But you need operate automatic vending machine to get reservation of seat. Hakone freepass price includes regular fare of Odakyu line for Hakone, Odawara. Only some travel agency sell Hakone freepass including Romance car surcharge. Thank you for your comment. If you want to take the Odakyu Romance Car, you need a limited express ticket and a regular ticket. But if you have a Hakone Freepass, you don't need to buy a regular ticket. If you have a Suica or PASMO, you don't need to buy a regular ticket, and you don't need a Hakone Freepass, but you need to touch the Suica or PASMO when entering the ticket gate and when you go out the ticket gate. Because Suica and PASMO has recorded where you got on. IC cards such as Suica and PASMO or so can be used by one person. If you are traveling with three people, each person must have a Suica or PASMO. You have to touch Your PASMO at Shinjuku station when you getting on and touch it again at Hakone-Yumoto when you getting off. Have a nice trip!

Thanks your attention. Romance car drives by Odakyu railway company, Not JR company. Then you can’t use JR-pass. JR-pass is only for JR-line. If you want to Hakone by JR-pass, I think you will get on Tokaidou-line of JR to Odawara station, and get on Odakyu line from Odawara to Hakone.
