Great Video. I used to travel all over the world but glad I don't need to anymore. Credit cards and currency exchange was my vehicle for purchases. I travel 100 miles a day for work now and would like to bring it down to 25 and less as I get older. One thing I was reviewing was bringing silver or gold coins with me across borders. If it is 24kt gold, Canada allows it to move freely but anything less and there is a tax. As you mentioned, America allows you to bring $10K of currency and it was my understanding I can carry 10,000 $1 American Eagles on the trip ($10K face value) however, the destination country may have a different treatment to the silver currency. I never found an answer. So I though Canadian maple leaf gold, American Buffs, AGEs and, ASEs was a good means to travel with other funds within the law. Interesting video. The only issue with crypto is once it is moved and converted, a taxable events occurs. Please continue the great work.
@baldguymoneyofficial2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ken - thanks for watching. Gold bullion is usually allowed to cross border duty free under the condition you declare. I will look into Canada and the 24k rule. As for Crypto - you definitely have to be careful with the taxes as they apply in the country you send to or sell in - that's a mighty good point! My assumption here is that you don't make any profits therefore there are no gains to tax.

Thanks. You didn't mention going through airport security, since you cannot wear a money belt. Putting the cash on the conveyor belt while you get tied up with TSA in the xray machine puts your money at risk of being stolen. To me, this risk is valid, no matter what amount -- $500, $1000, etc. Any suggestions?
@baldguymoneyofficial10 ай бұрын
Take it before - announce how much is there and let it be known. Make sure they know you’re watching them and that you have witnesses.
@Lacronh10 ай бұрын
@@baldguymoneyofficialThanks for your reply. If traveling alone, there are no witnesses, and I cannot be watching if tied up with TSA agent at the 360 degree xray machine. I was once detained after the xray machine due to a plastic comb in my pocket, which required either wanding or frisking, all of which kept me from watching my items on the conveyor belt. So I think it's a big risk to leave a large sum sitting out in a tray on a conveyor belt for anyone to take.

Great, thank you so much for the information. I have a question, though. I loaned someone money from my inheritance a while ago, and they just paid me back. It's less than $10,000, so I don't need to declare it. However, if the airport asks, the only proof I have is the bank withdrawal receipt and the deposit from my friend. Should I be worried about this? By the way, I'm traveling to a country with a poor exchange rate. if I use international banking, Western Union, or other channels, I'll lose a lot of money compared to taking cash. Thank you so much 🙂

Many times it happens in the ramp from the terminal to the airplane. Reportedly, check-in personnel tip the feds who then wait in ambush. If you must declare it, hiding it won't help. Is there a way to position your affairs so you can (freely & conveniently) travel with big money secure from the tyrants? In effect, "Yes I have money and you can't legally seize it." How do bank couriers do it? (They are at target risk, but not from authorities.)

If confiscation is the penalty for not declaring the money - no party who is half way intelligent should ever carry these amounts over the border. Sending money is quite easy in other ways. Simply withdraw if from an institution once you arrive, of have it sent by a professional delivery service.

Sending money in other ways can be very expensive. For example, Western Union charges high fees to send money. Taking it on your persons is usually done to avoid paying those fees and sometimes out of necessity. It's important people know that they can usually take more than $10 000 if needed.

Lmao a delivery service . I hope you don’t trust those people with your money

$10,000 is absurd. I’d rather fly with $100k on me than declare it & put it public by people who can only afford to live in their cars. Also. A family of 5 You ain’t making it on a 2 week vacation with that little money.

Inquiring minds want to know, why do we allow govts to dictate how we use our money. HINT: the govt is paid out of our taxes.

This is silly. Unless you are MOVING to a new country just use your credit card when buying things in foreign countries while travelling. Transfer money onto your credit card before you go in terms of your expected budget needed for your trip. Credit cards have the best forex rate I find…certainly better than any foreign exchange desk you find at airports, etc. Credit cards are also universally accepted at ANY vendor globally who takes MasterCard or Visa (ie practically everyone). Assuming you pay your CC off every month and aren’t paying interest this is the best way to go…plus you earn your reward/airpoints, etc! If you need cash just look at the back of your bank/credit card..if it has an international plus+ sign or Cirrus logo you can use it at virtually any overseas ATM to get cash in the local currency. As there are per transaction fees the best thing is to take out as much cash as you need for that country/currency in as few withdrawals as possible (ie a few large withdrawals over many small ones). Yes there are some small transaction fees this way, but it’s the forex rates that any foreign exchange desk will rip your eyes out on. Most ppl don’t do the math when using these services and end up paying way more to exchange physical cash either overseas or at home before you go. Using your own credit card and bank card wisely have worked best for me when travelling. Using the cash for smaller transactions and the credit card for larger purchases. More and more places aren’t even accepting cash these days and obviously a credit or bank card is a lot more secure from theft than a pocket full of cash in a country you don’t know well. Finally bit disappointed for a gold guy you didn’t touch on moving money in this way: If gold/silver coins have a govt monetary value stamped on them (ie $50 USD on a 1oz gold eagle) I believe it is the govt monetary value of the coin ($50 USD) RATHER than the market price of the metal (currently $1720 USD/ounce) that is taken into account in that $10,000 USD calculation! I.e. you could then take 200 x 1 oz gold eagles (or 199 of them technically to keep you under the $10k USD monetary limit BUT in actual fact you are really moving 199oz x $1720 USD = $342,280 USD in metal VALUE! I’m not 100% sure on this but I think there is a reason why the MONETARY $ value on gold/silver coins hasn’t been updated in a VERY long time. Perhaps a loop hole for the wealthy or secret govt entities to move money around as opposed to “currency”? Gold/silver being “money” and all other fiat $ being “currency” of course! This would make for a much more interesting topic for a video IMHO!

This video is not about travelling on vacation - there are many people in the world who live in foreign countries and want to travel back to their home countries with large amounts of cash to deposit in the bank. I understand that you may not be in that situation, but please understand there are many people (including myself) who live in that reality.

Fair enough but still think the conversation about gold coins etc with a govt monetary value printed on them (ie $50 USD for 1oz gold eagle) vs actual metal value would make for an interesting video in terms of that $10k limit when travelling.

The country I live in is basically a cash society. No plumbers, contractors accept credit cards or businesses to buy building supplies in the smaller cities.Lumber, sand, concrete ,doors, windows all cash.. I've never stayed at a hotel or eaten in a restaurant that accepts credit cards. I'm sure the more expensive businesses in the bigger cities accept them. The closest ATM to me is 4 hours away and any holidays which is often your lucky to withdraw $150 a day. Makes accumulating large amounts of cash to build difficult. I much prefer paying with a credit card for many of the reasons you gave but that's just not possible.
