My advice: 1. If you're from the US and do a lot of international travel, get Google Fi or T-Mobile for your phone plan. Unlimited data/text in 210+ countries means you don't have to worry about getting a local SIM or finding local wifi. Besides the trouble it saves, I think always having a connection is much safer (for communication and for GPS). 2. Get a backpack that is carry-on size, it'll really decrease the chance of your bag being lost in transit. Her bag looks way over that size limit. 3. Offline Google maps is great, but can be annoying to download large areas (eg. an entire country). Also Google is bad with trails. While I use Google as my primary maps, I also have MAPS.ME which lets you download the entire country easily, has much better trail coverage (and when routing, shows you the altitude changes) and has offline routing for walking in all countries. 4. Unfortunately, sexism in many countries is a lot more than what Americans are used to. Depending on the country, if I was a woman, I would feel safer wearing loose comfortable pants, as opposed to tights or shorts. I don't like victim blaming, and women _should_ be free to wear whatever they want, but it's important to realize that not all other countries have the same values. In the end, you can only control your own actions that affect your safety. Otherwise, I agree with all her other tips.

I just came back from my first solo trip and first trip abroad. I only had Saturday and Sunday to explore Canada as much as I could so I used the Public transit system for the first time. got lost a lot, but the people were very helpful. I took lots of screenshots of the maps just in case. I even lost my phone!!! in the snow at night! On the first night, I got there and it was snowing a lot. Luckily someone found it and saw me looking like a crazy person looking for my phone, and gave it back. because I was limited on time I walked 13miles each day just to see as much as I could. My body hurts so much, but I made so many new friends and had such a wonderful time that the pain and problems I had along the trip were not such a big deal. Currently running on 2hrs of sleep because I had to go to work as soon as I got of my plane.

Great tips, especially how you handled the two dudes that wanted to hire a videographer. Absolutely correct, you are under no moral obligation to do anything that raises your hackles. it’s cool to hear your tips! I’ve solo traveled to all 50 US states, 5 Canadian provinces, and 23 countries and in parallel have come up with similar tips as you :) However back in the day before cell phones I never updated someone by text, I just tried to bond with local people because especially in remote locations, friends and family thousands of miles away are useless anyway - mine, at least, unless you have friends and family in the travel or international relations fields, lucky you! I enroll my travels with the government and put the embassy on speed dial, bc those feel more useful to me than updating someone back home who might be sleeping anyway.

Lexie, I have traveled extensively as well. A suggestion I use; I always sneak a photo of the taxi driver and or vehicle. My family will know photos are hidden in Google storage just in case. When everything goes well, I delete it. I have a VPN on my phone. I use Google maps and follow the driver on it to make certain I am being taken to desired destination. It worked fine in China, Italy, Egypt and in Denmark. However, you cannot use it in Vietnam because it is too costly for Wi-fi access. Moreover, I always take photos of my belongings in the hotel room as I leave it and add a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door when I venture out. This way, I can make certain to document theft. Do you or any other person have safety suggestions?

Excellent points! At some point during my trip in South America I had to leave my friends in Huaraz, Peru, as I was sick and they were going to do a 8 day trek. I decided to continue on my own and go visit Ecuador for a week, combining a trip to the Galapagos as well. It was amazing. I have to tell you, the main reason I felt confident about doing it on my own was knowing the language. As I'm not a native Spanish speaker, but Italian, I knew how to handle myself and was able to communicate with everyone with no problem. I took three consecutive buses as they were 4 times cheaper than a flight, and it gave me a sence of independence and self-confidence in my abilities to take care of myself in a foreign country. It lasted in total two weeks until I finally rejoined my friend in Colombia. Definately an important experience to have to boost up your travelling skills!

year late reply but I did a little bit of solo travel a couple years ago in Europe and definitely felt like I had no one there to talk to at first but eventually started getting the courage to just say hi to the person next to me on the bus or whatever and start a conversation about our different lives and it was quite rewarding. about the feeling of not being in your own home I kept thinking to myself about how amazing it was that I was where I currently was and the feelings of wonder and excitement kept me distracted and made me not feel any negative feelings about being away from where I lived.

I love this video!!! I went to live in Nicaragua for six months right after I turned 18 and it is way less dangerous than what people make it out to be. the catcalling is indeed extreme (not so much in San Juan del Sur and Leon) but boy, everywhere else I went I did not go a minute without men commenting. But that's really just it - it can make you feel a little uncomfortable because you're always so watched as as european looking woman, but the men do not do anything besides catcalling (at least it didn't happen to me luckily). And one important thing for Nicaragua: Check the Taxis for a red stripe on their registration plate in the back or front of the car. Those are the official Taxis! There is no special look to the official taxis that distinguish them from other cars, it's really just that red stripe. Always make sure to check for it to be safe and not get in a random persons car!!
