How to treat an infected koi scale

In todays video, we go through how to treat a koi with a damaged scaled / infected scale. Typically this may be ok to leave but with the stocking densities we have, we are at more of an exposed risk of a secondary infection.
To counteract this we make a 1:1 mic of formadlahyde and Methalayne Green. This then gives us FMG. FMG is used for a variety of treatments listed below, but we are using it as a topical treatment.
FMG uses:
White spot, Trichodina, Costia and Chilodonella and fungal infections.
We will take the fish out every 48 hours, and re do the same treatment until the scale is white all over. The length of time it can take a koi to develop a new scale can vary, but typically this would take around is between a few weeks and 6 months.
Heating the pond will make the healing process alot faster, as well as adding salt as this will help with the osmosis levels of a koi. Ideally we will salt to 0.6%.

Jack you need to invest in a carp cradle or at least a padded carp mat.A wet towel on wooden boards that’s a horror.

I take what your saying mate but it’s far easier to disinfect a towel as opposed to a carp net/sling. Cheap and disposable, in Japan they use newspaper on concrete

@@TheBaldingReefer I have to disagree with you Jack, you would use the same product to disinfect a carp Mat as you would a towel and far safer. If I saw that practice from what ever dealer I would walk away and not even buy a goldfish let alone an expensive koi. Each to there own but don’t look good practice to me.

@@heidispawsandfins I’m afraid it’s not stand practice to lay a wet towel on a dirty wooden floor and treat a valuable I gess koi in that way. I have first hand experience of working and visiting many koi farms in England and abroad. I have seen how professional koi Health specialist and dealers treat koi and what I have seen is not that. If you joined my fishing club and you even turn up without a suitable padded carp mat you don’t get on a lake. Fish welfare is paramount at the end of the day and if that’s the way Jack wants to treat and deal with his koi that’s down to him but if you put content out in the public domain like that expect to be criticized. Each to there own and everyone one entitled to an opinion.

@@martingage5323 the fish was on a towel. At no point did it touch the floor. You don't want to have the fish up high in case it falls for some reason. Unfortunately, my disabilities prevent me now but I've been a carp fisherman and when you land a carp, the padded mat is on the ground (a cradle would be no good for giving treatment as you don't have a flat surface), a dirty lake side. The reason it is padded in the middle with extra round the edges is to prevent the fish from damaging itself and getting off the mat while writhing and flapping around because it's fully conscious! That is the ONLY reason for the mats! I think you'll find that there are very few places that don't require an unhooking mat when fishing. At least I've never come across one! This fish was unconscious and laid on a clean towel. This gives it all the protection it needs as well as being able to wrap it and keep it wet while treating. You can't keep pouring buckets of water over it like when you're waiting to weigh or have a picture with a fish you've caught! I've never seen anyone sterilise their mats or cradles after each catch either! I've seen many videos of koi in Japan that have been put on rags or towels and they are meant to be the "elite"!
