Thank you. In my experience, you can also offer two items without words and once the child goes for one of them, you put words to what he wants (e.g., "You want Mac & cheese!!!) instead of making a verbal offer in the beginning.

@@kid--presentable he had progressed a lot in just a short amount of time! He's no where near where he's supposed to be yet but he's much closer to it than he was when I commented. He can figure out how to ask for things and tell us about things and we've worked a lot to get him to tell us when he's tired or hungry or if he wants us to help him cuz his younger brother is trying to take his stuff (we have a baby that will just get all up in his business) it may help that we have a 2 year old that is very expressive about his wants and needs and gets those things fulfilled when he speaks. I'm not sure if it plays a role but it probably is very different than having no siblings that are very close in age and have average or above average ability to communicate

I would be careful about “removing” echolalia in an autistic person. That is often a stabilizing and regulating action that helps them avoid overstimulating themselves. My son uses it that way. Forcing him to mask and remove that was a bad experience for him

Echolalia is a natural speech development and we typically see an increase in echolalia from 18 months to 24 months and then a decrease as their language continues to expand. Has the echolalia decreased recently by chance?

What if the chip is older and still repeat ?
@radosvetav3 жыл бұрын
For both of my daughters, no came before yes. My older daughter didn't get to use it as a word until she was almost 3, when she wanted to confirm something she would just repeat the word or part of sentence she agreed to. And she was VERY talkative and began using a lot of words very early. Now for the younger one she nods for yes, but no is a word she uses correctly, so I wonder if confirmation is something that come later in children's understanding of language.
@TheSpeechScoop3 жыл бұрын
I totally agree that usually we see “NO” verbally appear before YES, mainly because kids KNOW what they DO NOT want or do not want to do (like leave the park) I would recommend using over the top specific questions when targeting YES with your little one - like something VERY exciting & you could even build her into the word Ike “EE- AH” YEAH!” & be overly excited & exaggerative - i’ve done this with standing at the sliding door and a parents house asking if the child wants to go outside! & once they imitate EE or -AH, we go, then we blow a few bubbles and come back in for a snack and then repeat over and over and over again and I try to build the word & understanding that way! Lmk if that makes sense!

What do you do when your child expects you to repeat back what they just said? It's not because it's she didn't hear but, because she obsesses with wanting that phrase repeated to her.

Hi! So my son is 3.5 and he has echolalia. We just got a screening for him a few days ago and they said the same thing that he had a few red flags for autism. I’ve been worried about it for a while so I kept trying to research for the past 2 years and he doesn’t seem to meet any of the other symptoms of even high functioning autism. However, my son watched shows like Little Baby Bum for the first year of his life and I didn’t know how detrimental that was to him until he was almost 2. He babbled and pointed and would show us what he wanted but he didn’t actually start talking until his sister was born right after he turned 2. His speech has majorly improved over the last year and a half but he does repeat a lot still. I’m wondering, though, does he do that because I repeat him? Or because he started talking so late so he is catching up? We do have some back and forth conversation and if I ask him a question like “do you want a banana?” Hell say “want a banana” until I say “yes or no?” Then he’ll tell me yes or no if he wants it or not.

PLEASE look into gestalt language learners!! We do NOT want this to go away! You are DELAYING their language development by trying to reduce this! Ugh it breaks my heart that the research is ahead of the practice because change is SO slow that we are impacting this whole generation of gestalt language learners who communicate with echolalia including delayed echolalia

As an autistic person with an autistic son i do not agree with this. Echolalia was the tool i used to get my son verbal after being nonverbal. It is hard to create your own sentences BUT you can repeat and remember sentences. Also repeating for us is a connection to others. It is hard to form bonds to the outside world and repeating gives safety and connection. Echolalia is how i became fluent in English as a second language at 7 years old. It is how i learn all language as an autistic person. My tip: make ur own videos. Play a pretend scenario. Like a movie. Give sentences that can easily be reshaped. Example: can i have a ..... Please. .... Makes me feel .... I understand that this approach in the video can be logical to a neurotypical person but we dont work this way.
