Many sopranos have difficulty hanging on to a trill.Joan not only holds on (sometimes at length) to her trill, but (wonder of wonders) she trills on a top note, without any exertion.

Wow! She can experiment with dynamics on her thrills(that messa di voce)? Amazing. Her thrills are very well defined. Fast but you can really hear the notes.

Sutherland's trills were unique.....In fact, at the end of her long, legendary career, I believe she used trills as a form of relaxation before her high notes. Belle Julie Soudant (a voice teacher at Juilliard from 1920s-1970s) used to say that a trill was an intonated gargle.... That was Mme. Soudant's explanation of "how" to trill.....

She was a mistress of the trill as a musical effect. In particular her ability to perform feats such as the mezza di voce while trilling is unmatched. Only Callas can rival her, and only in the use of the trill for emotional rather than musical effects.

Sutherland's trills in the theatre were INCREDIBLE! I remember the unaccompanied one at the end of her first aria in Lucrezia Borgia - time appeared to stand still and the air literally glittered. I believe that she said she never had to learn how to do them and that they were just there by nature. There's an Australian bird which trills apparently and she imitated it in the garden as a child. Of course, her mother was an amateur singer with a voice of great beauty and superb technique whom she copied.

The trill was a fundamental part of the singing student learning from 1650 till 1900. You can hear Patti, Melba, Tetrazzini, Kurz!! All of them and many others had a wonderful trill. Sutherland and Callas also, but they were just a part of a wonderful centenial chain of singing control.

Totally agree, and would like to add that trill was also used for male voices! Now adays it is extremely rare to hear a trill from men (aside from Rockwell Blake) which is unfortunate, more men need to buck up and learn to trill.

@@magicmonkichi Yes!! Unfortunately almost only women keep the practice and glory of the trill in the XX Century. But there's some wonderful estoy examples by Jadlowker, Battistini, Fisher Dieskau.

WONDERFUL video! I had the privilege of seeing both of these two great singers in person in the 80's.

Sutherland and Callas were the two best trillers of the mid-twentieth century. They could do just about everything on a trill, including a messy di voce, which is hard even on a single note. One thing Callas could do better with the trills is to bind the trills into a slow melodic line, which Sutherland never could. But in faster music, nobody could beat Sutherland in trilling. The cabaletta in I masnadieri is an amazing piece of singing.

Start on the upper note , then go down and back up slowly. Then slowly speed it up. It is caused by oscillating the larynx.
