I just got off the phone with Garmin after seeing this video and they are sending me a cradle to try. I bought an echomap ultra 126sv October of 21. Went out this weekend and it would not power on. I did the troubleshooting steps and found power all the way to the cradle, even on the cradle itself. Saw this video and immediately called Garmin. They are sending me one next day air for free. The easiest transaction for service/warranty I have ever made. The support representative even sent me an email to contact him directly if the cradle does not work so we can take the next action of sending head in. Thanks Dan Richard Fishing for the video and I hope its just the cradle.

I can't remember the device i was checking but the fuse checked good but in fact it was open on one end of the filament. Garmin has an issue with these cradles for sure. They are a quality company and after I posted this I spoke to them and they sent me out a replacement cradle. Garmin has the best customer service for sure. My first unit had a cradle failure but garmin replaced it for free. I think they wanted a shipping fee but I dont recall now. My Newer( 2 years old) 93sv UHD just had its cradle fail, the unit would start going off intermittently and would be difficult to get back on. After cleaning all the connectors it was still flakey and I noticed that reported power to the unit would waver to lower indicated voltages. Cleaning and testing and monitoring voltage inside vs the plug one minute it was perfect and the next 8 or 9 volts. I wiggled and cleaned everything I could but finally I decided to see what was inside the cradle and between the cable connectors and the multi pin strip that the finder unit snaps into. | I Drilled out the little torqs screws and viola, Between the rear and the front there is actually a multi layer printed circuit board which connects all those pins on the inside to the plugs on the outside. As with most PC boards, It is sealed and not serviceable at all. (technically), I bought a new cradle and the unit is instantly perfect again. I am going to call this a manufacturers defect with the cradles since I do not remove my unit as many people do so they just went bad internally. Two times is too many times. Garmin needs to fix these even out of warranty since it is an obvious design issue. After spending thousands on garmin livescope and fishfinders I am loyal customer but I am going to call and ask for a replacement for this second failure anyway.

Extremely helpful video and thank you for sharing, however I shouldn’t have to be doing this for a unit that’s only 2 years old when I have a 10 year old Lowrance in my boat that has never had the slightest issue with it. Don’t think I’m going to be buying Garmin moving forward I’ll switch everything back over to Hummingbird or Lowrance. This is insane to think that vibration can cause the power supply cables to shift off of the contact. Hello, you’re in a freaking boat going over waves what the heck do they think is going to happen. Here’s an idea “MAKE THE UNIT BETTER” like Lowrance and Hummingbird. I changed out all but one of my Lowrance units to Garmin spend over $5K for a Livescope setup with the black box and 2 grafts and it’s lasted just over 2 years and it’s broken. The 10 year old Lowrance is running like it’s brand new and it’s the one that is fixed to the boat out in the elements. My Garmin goes on the front for Livescope and into a padded backpack when I get off the water and stored in my house. Expected much more out of Garmin especially from their customer support. I spoke to a complete useless customer support representative who had no clue what he was talking about when he was speaking to my master mechanic after being on hold for over an hour. I’m Ripping everything made by Garmin off my boat. This is the worst experience I’ve ever had purchasing a product for $5K and it lasted almost 3 years.

Where did you find the required voltage for the unit? I'm having problems with my livescope freezing up. The livescope is on its own lifepo4 battery but the 93sv is on the cranking battery, which shows, according to the 93sv a voltage range of 12.3 down to 11.8 by the end of the day, so I'm hoping that's the problem. thanks
@DanRichardFishing2 жыл бұрын
You can actually find the voltage requirements right on the echomap product page on garmin's website, just Google your echomac model and it'll come up under the specs. If I remember correctly the minimum voltage required for a echomap is actually 9 volts.
@LunkerFishing3 жыл бұрын
The manual on my brand new Garmin Echomap UHD 93SV says input voltage can be from 9-18 volts dc. I have the 9" model but the manual says the same for the 6 and 7" models as well.
@DanRichardFishing3 жыл бұрын
That's a really good point and I did check and you're absolutely right. Garmin tech support have told me several times that the voltage needs to be 12 volts or higher for the unit to turn on so I'm going to have to give them a call and get clarification on that. Either way your battery voltage on your boat should be 12.6 to 12.8 when fully charged or your battery is on the way out. I'll post an update when I get more information :) Thanks so much for bringing this up!
@DanRichardFishing3 жыл бұрын
OK I spoke to Garmin and got some clarification on the 12.0 volt rule with Garmin vs the voltage range in the manual. So in a bench environment or standalone environment such as an ice fishing combo, then the voltage in the manual will work and power it on, so I was mistaken about not turning on at 12.0 volts. The importance of 12 volts is when you're on a boat because when you turn over your engine, your voltage actually drops (just like in a car). When you're reading under 12 volts, especially as you get close to 11 volts, the drop in voltage when you start up will dip under 9 and shut off your units. As mentioned in the video as well, any dip under the 12.2 mark will start setting off the voltage warnings on your echomap, however you can adjust that threshold. I'll make a follow-up video about this corrected information and link it to this video, thanks so much for bringing it up!

Wow that is a tough one! It seems awfully coincidental that the failure happened right after damaging your transducer, but I don't see what one would have to do with the other. @@DanRichardFishing Dan thanks for getting back to me. Previous to this winter, I had the unit rigged up as a portable unit on a board since I only had a small aluminum boat. I would take the entire unit and store inside through the winter. However last year I finally got a boat where I installed the unit on the console. This past winter, I left the cradle on the boat, stored in a boat house and took the unit home to store inside. No issues last fall and the first day that I snapped it in place this spring it would not power on - nothing. First time the cradle was stored apart. I checked all points along the power cables, including at the cradle port - no issues - fully charged battery reading no lower than 10V. I did speak to Garmin - nothing they can do, unit is too old now where they no longer offer refurbished units. They also no not have any service shops up here (Ontario). So I am pooched! It's a puck-style - on the inside of the hull. So, it seems like I might need to replace the Transducer? Any ideas? Thanks!
@DanRichardFishing3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary, thanks for the kudos on the channel! As for your Echomap sonar issue, it could be a couple of things... First thing is to check and see if you have sonar options from the main menu on your Echomap.... if you have no options to view your sonar like the downview or traditional sonar, then your Echomap is not even detecting the transducer anymore and it will need to be replaced. If you DO have sonar options but the feed is dead, then I strongly suspect that the impact may have cracked the epoxy seal on your transducer puck on the inside bottom of your hull or has completely broken off. When you get any air between the puck and the hull, you get a dead reading because the ping signals are just bouncing off the hull instead of going through it. So check and make sure the puck isn't broken off or moves when you pull on it. If it's securely attached with no movement, then you will need to replace it. If it's broken off, then you will need to clean off the old epoxy and re-glue it. Make sure you use a slow curing 2 part epoxy for gluing transducers such as Hawkeye epoxy or Lowrance epoxy. Regular 2 part epoxy cures fairly quickly and the resulting chemical reaction produces air bubbles within the epoxy as it cures. The result is a glued on puck with air bubbles in the glue, and as mentioned, air = BAD! A slow curing epoxy won't get the bubbles. Hope that helps, let me know how it turns out!

I have a striker 4 unit. Unfortunately only has the gold directly connected ribbon cable. I confirmed power to the inside terminals (on the inside of the case where the power terminals connect to the board). Any other suggestions?

Hi Tony, unfortunately I am not familiar with Striker units so I can't tell you for sure what to look for. Can you tell me when or how it stopped working? Did something happen all of a sudden like a fall or a heavy rainfall or just one day to the next it stopped working?

Dan Richard Fishing it has been rained on a couple times. But never really drenched or submerged. One day it worked. Next day it wouldn’t even turn on and beep. I was hoping it was a loose connection but no connections. Not sure how to probe around either.

Dan Richard Fishing 12.8. Fresh battery. Measured at cable. Also measured inside case at the internal connector. So power is ok, wire ok, fuse ok, and case terminals ok. Maybe power button connection issue to board or some circuit component issue. But don’t have circuit diagram to know where to prove for where an open circuit might be.

Great video! I just installed a Echomap UHD 73sv on my kayak that I purchased in March. I tested it, as I was installing it, and it turned on just fine. I turned it off by the power button and then removed the monitor so I could finish cleaning up. Then when I put the monitor back on the cradle, it wouldn't turn back on. I saw your video and headed straight to purchase a volt meter. My cradle is getting 12.4 - I have a small battery for my kayak that other kayakers are using for their Garmin units. I was hoping there was some kind of reset button or something? ;) . Any ideas?
@DanRichardFishing2 жыл бұрын
You can do a master reset by holding home and power buttons down at the same time and you should see "Delete all user settings" appear. Release the buttons and select yes for the reset. If that doesn't work, I would contact Garmin and file a warranty claim or ask for a new cradle. You still have a warranty if you got it in March so Garmin will cover you :) Good luck!

@@DanRichardFishing You are so right! Even though my cradle was showing that it is getting power at 12.4, it was the problem. Garmin sent me a new cradle and now it works perfectly. Crazy. Does my Garmin echomap 50dv need a cradle that you speak of?

Hi Joseph, sorry to hear about your 50DV not working! So that's definitely an older unit and no, it doesn't need the cradle as the power cable connects directly to the unit. Can you confirmed that you have power going to the pins on the plug that connect to the unit?

Hey Dan, Hope you can help me. My one unit the fuse blew on me so I changed the fuse and I still can’t get the device to turn on. I checked batteries I’m getting well over 12 volts for both of them. I checked the power cable and noted that I’m getting 8.5 volts from It which is the issue. What I’m not sure though is whether I need a new power cable or if the new fuse I put in is restricting some flow, any insight on this issue?
@FratBoyFishing2 жыл бұрын
To clarify, everything was working fine until the fuse blew. Once I changed the fuse, the second fuse I put It also blew and now the I have a third fuse in and I’m only getting 8.5 v
@DanRichardFishing2 жыл бұрын
OK something is definitely off, are you sure your cable is not damaged somewhere along the run? I'd pull the full cable out and inspect that it's not cracked or been been severely pinched someplace. Once you confirm the cable is physically OK, check the voltage just before the fuse. Remove the fuse from the fuse housing and then touch the positive of your multimeter to the fuse contact coming from the battery and touch negative wire to the negative pin of the cable. If that's good, put the fuse in but don't close the housing. Now do the same test but touch the fuse section that is sticking out from the holder to the positive and see if you get the 12v. If you do, then you know its something damaged past the fuse towards the unit connection. If you have 12v throughout all this, I would then cut the cable maybe 2 feet from the red connector that plugs in to the unit and re-check the wires. If that's STILL good, but you still only have 8.5v at the connector pins, something in the connector was damaged. For me the key is that you blew the fuse twice, so something is shorting out in your wire causing it to pop. Give that a try and let me know what you find!
@FratBoyFishing2 жыл бұрын
@@DanRichardFishing hey Dan, thanks for the advice, I figured It was something with the socket in my boat. However I’m having a very similar issue with my other Garmin unit in the back. The Fuse keeps blowing, I used the multimeter and I was getting around 13.5-14 volts from the power cable signaling It was working. But It blows as soon as I turn the unit on. I tried switching to another battery that was putting out 12.5 volts thinking maybe the 14 was causing the fuse to burst and the fuse still burst! I then used my multi meter to check the connection/wires before the fuse (a few inches away from the yellow fuse holder) and it’s reading 12.5-13 volts as well yet fuse still blowing when turning on my unit .Not sure what to do now 😅
@alanabara12482 жыл бұрын
Do you really need the fuse if you only using the Garmin unit and not using anything else
@DanRichardFishing2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, yes you absolutely need to fuse any electronics connected to your battery otherwise you risk severely damaging your unit or even cause a fire if there is a short.

What if unit won't shut off, any ideas?
@DanRichardFishing2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon, I'll admit that's a new one! So holding the power button down doesn't shut off the unit, but works to turn it on? Maybe the easiest way to get around that would be to install an on/off switch. You might always want to do a reset and make sure you're running the latest firmware as well if you haven't already.

I have full power on my ECHOMAP Plus 64cv but the down scan is all pixelized and drops off the picture in square blocks! It's been used MAYBE a dozen times and then this. NOTHING has changed, my unit has never fallen and it just did this out of the blue. It's the older model with the 3 plugs in the rear as well I will be trouble shooting it soon. I'm thinking it ay be the little ports not he plug that remain on the boat are slightly oxidized so I will take a carb cleaning pin and slide it on in them to clean out any potential oxidation. I live in South Florida so it's quite possible a couple drops of salt water got on the pins and caused oxidation is what I'm thinking. Worst case scenario I'll have to buy a new transducer to replace my existing new one. I called up Garmin while I was under warranty and sadly they were terrible in the way of helping me in any capacity which ticked me off and I will never buy another Garmin product as a result, but I'm going to prep my boat to sell, so I'll just fix this one and move on from there.

Contact cleaner and dielectric grease is your friend. If you don't have contact cleaner take some white vinegar sparingly and put it on a toothbrush and scrub and then use rubbing alcohol to polish the pins

I've been reading that there is a design defect in the Plus cradle that allows water to get inside the connector housing and completely corrode the inside circuit board. The connectors on the cradle and on the unit look brand new. I'm going to take my defective one apart to see if that's true. I use dielectric on connectors exposed directly to water but you're not supposed to on cradle connections. Dielectric grease is not supposed to applied directly to metal connectors, but to the casing to seal it. Directly on Garmins site: support.garmin.com/en-CA/?faq=bbJlJMpt3u14FLzFXZSC37#:~:text=While%20the%20power%20cables%20for,metal%20contacts%20of%20a%20connector. I highly recommend NOT using it on batteries, it makes a disgusting gummy mess. Use a terminal battery spray like Permatex. Good tip for cleaning the connectors, I use that same trick or sometimes alcohol.

Welp, it didn't work for me. I bought a new cradle on Amazon for my Echomap 94sv Plus based on this movie, AND I talked to Garmin and they are sending me a new cradle (I'm supposed to take people shrimping in two days so covered my bases). The Amazon Garmin cradle arrived and I plugged my unit into it and....nothing. 12.7 volts at the cradle. Thankfully I can get a refund for the Amazon one. I'm on the phone now with Garmin. The guy says that my unit is discontinued so they can't offer me a replacement. I think I'm out of luck. It was a four year old unit. The Garmin guy said I might as well try to take it apart and see if something was loose. I'm going to try taking it apart. Update: there was a little 3/16" cable that didn't have a connector that didn't seem to be connected to anything. I couldn't figure out where or how to attach it. I'm off to the store to find another unit that will fit the hole I cut in the dash of my boat. Not a happy ending for this guy.
