O L on your fluke meter actually means" Over Load". Not Open. I just thought I would let you know, I'm an Electronic Engineer , this is what I do for a living.. but that reading does mean that you do not have Continuity between both connections that you tested. So you do not have a short between both of the connections...

Good stuff, even for someone who knows a bit about what you’re talking about, it’s still communicated thoroughly and you have great patience. You don’t assume people know, I’m not trying to sound cool like I know, but I actually happened to know what you were talking about. But I don’t think I could’ve communicated it that well, and for someone trying to figure this out I get a feeling you’re a valuable resource. Good work brother.

Also Just a side note to people who do their own wiring, when I was being Hasty I somehow got my positive and negative crossed when I was soldering to the output Jack. I checked everything else and nothing worked.... and I realized it was that simple. I thought it might be the switch but I was getting no output from any of the pickups so I switched those wires and it works now. So if none of the pickups work at all, the first place you might want to start is that output Jack knowing that everything is grounded there

What's up Dylan? Great vid. Quick question: When I check the resistance and flipping the p/u switch, my reader shows half the resistance from what Seymour Duncan suggest on their website? Configuration is 2 humbuckers. BTW, was installed by a luthier! Would it be installed paralleled instead of series? Thanks again ;)

So, I bought an Yngwie Malmsteen prewired pickguard. I installed it. All the pickups work and have an output BUT the bridge pickup has a terrible hum (but still has an output) AND the volume pot doesn't work when that pickup is selected but works on the other two. I tried replacing the volume pot. Same thing. I just ordered a new 5 way selector switch. If that doesn't work, I'm burning it.

? This tip did not solve my problem and I’m hoping that you would suggest something else. I just put together a diy kit with all new parts 4 CTS pots, and two humbuckers wired 50s style. I get sound from both pickups but very very low and only when the volume pot is all the way up. With a multi meter I have verified that everything is grounded, the pickups are at appropriate resistance (7-8k) and the capacitors are at about .23. I am at a loss to know what to do next. Thank you for your help.

I have an Epiphone SG that is very very quiet after sitting for a while. Both pick-ups are open 0ohm. The jack looks good. 1 tone and 1 volume seems good but the other 2 are open 0ohm. Not sure next step / sceptical because you said pick-ups typically don't go bad.

Great methodical presentation and explanation for problem shooting. Just one other thing that might present as the source of a problem would be one of the small wires themselves being faulty (broken copper wire) and needing to be replaced. I think this might be more likely on a new guitar, where the fault hasn't been picked up by factory quality control, so a new guitar should be returned for refund in that case.

If I compare the sound from the neck pick up and bridge, there is a huge difference. It’s like if there is not bass and mids signal in the bridge pick up. I have a pickup problem, hoping someone can help... I had out of town music store work on my HSS Stratocaster (Select series), after I gotta it back, the middle and neck pickups sounded weak and thin while the bridge pickup sounds muddy, (all on their own), The work was done out of town and it's next to impossible to get back to this so-called music store, can anybody take a guess as to what is going on? I lifted the pickguard and all the wire connections look good, I'm going to change the pickup selector just because it's been used a lot, but then again if somebody has any information as to help me assess this problem I really would appreciate it 👍

Excuse me repeating this question from another of your videos but what is the next step after checking the guitar with the cable and it reads OL? I rebuilt the wiring on a LP Standard style guitar and get an OL from both pickups. Is there a way to check the switch with the multimeter? I'm guessing there's a short somewhere. No sound from amp but there is a hum and the volume of the hum goes up and down when adjusting the volume controls.

Hi ! I just received a new original series fender strat ordered online. To my dismay, it sounds very weak and not chimy and resonant like a strat is supposed to. The sound of the guitar is very weak and kind of muffled and it is barely audible even at volume 5. As opposed to my other strat which sounds big and open and chimy even at volume 4. I have not yet opened the pickguard of the guitar. Do you think this is something I can troubleshoot and fix myself or should I just return the guitar. I really wanna keep this guitar because acoustically it sounds good and feels good. Please help !

I've recently tried to install a 3rd volume pot and wired my middle pickup to that volume pot then to the output wire off the main volume pot. The problem I have is when I try to blend the middle pickup it lowers the volume of the other pickups. Is this normal or have I wired something incorrectly. Also when I try just the middle pickup which should be directly wired without any switch between it has no sound unless I turn main volume up.

I actually had this happen with my single pickup Music Master. I plugged it in and you could literally hear the volume drop. Turning the knob didn't bring it back. So I decided to change just the volume pot. After looking at the condition of the rest, I went all out, volume and tone pot and since I had some Orange Drop caps, one went in. Only thing I kept was the output jack because it's a Switch Craft. First time trying Bourns pots. They seem ok. They were the only dime sized pots I had on hand that fit the cavity.

I had a crazy random short in my wiring on my last build. I had to eliminate things one step at a time. It was a combination of problems. First I found that one pickup lead was also connected to the pickup switch lead out, closing the circuit. Ok that seemed to fix it. Then I found as I stuffed the wires back into their cavities that it was cutting out again. Turns out that braided cable's grounding needs to be isolated between pre-switch and post switch and if they touch they will short. And finally we had a short at the pre-amp terminal because separating a braided ground from the wire and rewinding it as a ground wire is a bit of a finicky beyotch. My first real wiring job! No for unknown reasons I still get a ghost in the machine where the neck pickup and middle pick and blend knob can be in a certain position where I get no signal at all. But there is no need for the setting. I have no idea what I'm doing.

For anyone looking for a multimeter, I did all the specs research and the Kaiweets 118E is one of the best for the price. You can literally spend over $500 on a DMM and not even have it be able to measure the kinds of values you need for guitar. Whatever you get, check the ranges of values for current, resistance, capacitance, and whatever else you might want. Some dmms are meant for different tasks and paying more doesn't necessarily get you a better tool for your needs.

This concept of "testing at the pickup" (roughly at the 9:50 mark) seems like it would not work unless you first disconnect the pickup from the switch. If you have a bad switch and its shorting your PU, it will make the PU look like it has no resistance unless you remove the leads from the PU at the switch first. No?
@DylanTalksTone
@DylanTalksTone Жыл бұрын
it is almost impossible for a blade switch to short on it's own. They usually go open. If the switch has shorted, someone ruined it. It didn't "wear into a short"
@donald-parker
@donald-parker Жыл бұрын
@@DylanTalksTone Fair enough. But a loose ground wire somewhere could touch anywhere. So maybe it is safer to say IF you can measure resistance at the PU but not at the output jack, the likely problem is the switch or a bad pot. But if it measures 0 everywhere, you have a short somewhere and different steps to investigate are needed.

Q: WHY are my Tone knobs consistently producing Volume results? Multiple guitars, meter confirms all connections are good (Ground V completes across all expected points, Hot V pings at expected sources). Several guitars now, and I’m just following the diagram. I have checked with my multimeter and all grounds seem to be ok but when I put some overdrive or distortion to it, it seems to get a little buzzy. I've checked the ground connections from hell to highwater and they all check out fine. I will say when I put the new pickups in, I did a complete rewire job with all new pots, switches, and jack. So I am puzzled is it just normal or am I missing something?

So I’ve got a schecter c5 get 5 string bass. Recently my neck pickup when selected with the selector knob has no output. Either all the way on or when split between both, the volume is cut as if the pickup doesn’t work. Testing with a cable plugged in to the guitar I get the same resistance with each position. So I’m guessing that means the pickups are good but the knob is bad? I’m new to using multimeters.

This is why troubleshooting is so important, embarrassing story time... Some time ago I was thinking about painting my guitar. So I plugged it in to play and think about what color I'd like and it didn't work! I checked the Amp, it was fine, I checked the guitar "mostly" it seemed okay, so I figured it was the jack. I decided right then and there that this was a good time as any to start the process of dismantling and preparing the surfaces. Fast forward two weeks and I was putting it back together, as I was, I tried one last time to see what the problem was. All the solder was intact and there was no broken wires. Just by chance I started messing with the pots and goddammit, the volume nob was turned all the way down!🤣🤣🤣😅

have you wired the guitar yourself? check for any loose strands of wire that may short the signal. pull lightly on every wire to see if a cable loosened itself. also check the cover plate if it pushes any exposed cables together if you're worried the switch may be broken you can bypass the signal and avoid it to see if that gives you the result you're looking for

@@justklampfing1140 the wiring appears to be stock, I opened it to fix the bridge pickup, I plan on wiring a Seymour Duncan in soon, and I found that the switch works differently 😂😂 all diagrams for the telecaster show the bridge pickup wires to the bottom post of the switch and the neck is wired to the top. I have a 335 where we can see the tone difference just when the knob is between 0 to 4. What could be the cause of this? Bad pot? But it happens on both tone pots

Idk how anyone could have trouble troubleshooting a guitar’s wiring- it’s like 3-5 components max

Well I'm here because I just wired mine up in a super complex way. All sorts of coil splitting/push pull phase, push pull series/parallel.

Thanks for this! I have a fender ultra telecaster and i keep hearing a hum (when not playing) that disappears when I touch the (metal) knobs, or the bridge. whats the most probable diagnosis and how to fix it?

This is normal. You are grounding the guitar with your body. The solution is to never stop playing lol

So with the noise disappearing when I touch the strings it means the strings aren’t grounded through the bridge? I need to check the bridge to common ground ?
