@Bathtub Renew Thanks very much for posting this! I had been considering a "bathfitters" type renovation of the bathrooms in a condo I just bought, but seeing this has made me rethink that plan... I know most people will not have this kind of problem occur, regardless of how poorly fitted their "new" bathroom is... BUT seeing how bad the worst case might be makes me think it might be better to invest the money up front rather than pay the price later... Thanks again!

In 2017, my tub's liner began filling up with water over a few weeks. It sounded like a waterbed when I stood on it and the floor got real plump. I unscrewed the drain and removed it thinking all the water in the floor would either go down the drain or pour into the basement, but even with me standing on it, not a drop came out. Totally stumped, I had talked to 2 different friends who are professional plumbers, and neither one had an answer as to where and how the water could get in there and be so "pressurized". Both of them each said whatever you do don't drill a hole in the floor because the liner will fail if you do. So naturally I got my drill out, installed a 1/4" inch bit, picked the most logical place to drill, and drilled right through the liner. It was the best cheap repair I've ever done as it totally fixed the problem. I injected bleach into the hole, which killed whatever mold might have been in there and the floor has been fine ever since. What I do not understand and have never figured out is how water dripping behind the liner could ever pressurize that much. When I drilled the vent hole, water squirted and almost hit the ceiling in the shower for about 5 or 6 minutes, until it was just a little fountain. Then I used a ShopVac to suck out the rest. I patched the hole with PC-7 white marine epoxy, but water started collecting again, so I drilled it out. If anyone has a clue how non-pressurized water could basically fill up a balloon, please let me know as it's a total mystery to me.

I feel for you buddy. Im a journeyman plumber 32 years.Of course nothing beats changing out a nice American Standard or Kohler Enameled cast iron tub,,,,,its a chore but your done,,,,youre golden.Ive seen some good porcelain restoration guys,,,some good ,,,some ,,,well ,not so much.A trained eye can always spot a porcelain restore job,,,even the best porcelain job,.Ive looked at tub liners,,and you know what? "I don't think so ".The concept is good but too many chances for error during the install.i.e. water seeping in on the shoulder where the liner meets the wall and around the tub drain.By the time you do all that ,you could demo a cast iron tub with a sledge hammer and install a new freakin cast iron tub!.Yeah, I know youll have to remove and replace 2 rows of 4" tile ,,,SO WHAT! A good tile man can replace 2 rows of tile in a nice similar color and patter in one to 2 days and it will look cherry.I would never roll the dice on one of these Goddamned tub liners ,,sorry guys.I dont want a "call back" from a pissed off client.Just a suggestion guy ,,you do great work and I respect you but you might want to buy a Milwaukee Heat gun to help remove old silicone and adhesive,,,,,heat that stuff up right and it comes off like melted butter,,,youre working too hard Bro,,,great video none the less.Thanks ,,,please do more,,,DD in Los Angeles

i have had bath fitter do my whole tub & walls area 6 years ago & had no issues. still shiny, easy to clean & they come back whenever i wanted to have the caulking replaced when it gets yellow, no charge. now i moved into a condo that had the tub "painted" & its peeling under where you put the bathtub mat & where the soap dish sits. i guess wherever the water pooled....so im deciding between another paint job or bath fitters....both can go bad.

@Nia Long wow, sorry for your troubles. i'll tell you at the time i wrote my above comment, i also read a few bad reviews about water seeping under the bath fitters tubs after some years, so i decided to get a regular contractor to rip out the existing tub & i replaced it with a shower & all new tile. i thought i would miss the tub more but actually i dont. well lets hope president trump wins in 2020 & then your 401 will be replenished. thats how i bought my condo. my stocks exploded after trumps win in 2016. good luck to you.

My name is Mark Smith and I've been manufacturing Bathtub Liners for 36 years and have sold almost a Billion dollars worth of Bathroom remodeling during that time. What is being shown in this video is not normal. A properly installed Liner will last a lifetime. This liner was installed before the tile was installed. After the installer left, the homeowner removed the silicone around the edges of the liner to make room for the new tile, then replaced it with grout (All grout leaks eventually). That is how the water got under the liner. Looking at the video did not show any defect from the installer and if you look at the liner before this guy started working on it. With a good cleaning this liner looks like new. When water gets under a liner it creates a waterbed effect and it is dangerous. With the tile installed over the top of the liner the only solution is to take the liner out and either put in a new one with the proper seals or refinish the tub like this guy did. Most Bathtub liner companies would never install a liner in this situation. The liner is normally installed against the surface of the tile not under it. It makes me wonder why the homeowner put a liner in in the first place. If the tile was out. Why didn't he just replace the tub with a new one.
@bathtubrenew
@bathtubrenew 6 жыл бұрын
Mark I can appreciate your comment, but there are a few things people need to know, what I have found over the years of refinishing is the liners leak significantly more then the installers and manufacture would like to admit. In Windsor Ontario Canada there is a government owned and managed complex, they have over a thousand units between the 6 buildings that are situated in walking distance from each other. Approximately 7 years ago (I have been told) they had installed over 200 liners. I was contacted to review some of these liners for a solution because virtually everyone of these liners (all 200) have water trapped between the tub and the liner giving it the “water bed” effect. This is only one example of other calls that I get weekly from other people that all tell me their liner has water under it. So forgive me for being brash but if a person in the bathtub, bathroom fixture business has never heard of tub liners leaking consistently they are either embarrassingly willing ignorant or living in a cave. Moving forward; I encouraged dialogue with all trades and manufacturers a like, I would suggest that even the first initial concept of liners are a good alternative to replacement, the success and longevity is so impinging on the installation technique used in the field, I would think a better system should be developed for installation purposes, because there are issues in that industry this needs to be recognized and render remedy.

@@bathtubrenew I've been installing liners for Bath Fitter for over 10 years. While the longevity of the liner and quality of the finish work may hinge on the competency of the installer, as someone in the industry, you should know that the care and proper maintenance of ANYTHING, also determines how long something is going to last. As the other guy said, there was work done after the liner was installed which caused the "floater". On a normal liner installation(fit within a tile surround), any separation in the silicone seal requires 1 call to the service department and no service charges. Doesnt matter if it's a year old or 10, we come out and fix the problem. I dont know how the business is run in Canada but here in Ohio, Bath Fitter has a lifetime warranty on everything we install. If it means ripping the job out and starting over, we do it. A homeowner not taking care of their liner and not calling us out before it turns into a situation such as that in this video, is hardly the fault of the company or the installer. In the end, proper installation and care of the liner will outlast many tub refinishes.

Too funny, anyone can knock any product or craftsmanship when it comes to them profiteering from it. It's very apparent Mr. Wilshire has not installed a liner nor been to the manufacturer. There's a huge profit margin on liners if you look at the material and time it takes to form a liner. I've done both the installation of liners and refinishing and they both have their pros and cons. EPA changes to the chemicals used in refinishing have weakened and shortened the durability of the refinishing which is basically paint on top of porcelain. Materials/adhesives used with liners and the installers workmanship can also render a liner useless in no time. Both are good ideas to cheap out when the best option is to replace the tub with a new one and opt for a cast iron tub with a nice porcelain finish that'll last you lifetime if properly maintained.

I am about to move out of my house of 8 years, of which when we moved in a bath fitter was installed. It held water underneath the entire time. We never wanted to completely redo our bathroom because it was just a starter home, we were saving up for the forever home. So I learned how to keep draining the water underneath. Bathfitters are a horrible waste of money. Never waste your money on that junk it'll be much nicer and cheaper in the long run to replace a single part of the system compared to everything and then dealing with all the other filth.

Lol everyone hating bath fitters they have a life time warranty the warranty doesn’t expire…just call they come out.. they don’t do tile so that’s the homeowners fault for having tile done over a liner that will cause the warranty to expire. Now if the liner was sold after the tile than that’s bath fitters fault and should’ve never installed it. And that black stuff isn’t mold that’s actually primer… they use that to adhere with the tape. Also silicone are you kidding me??? That’s np1 construction adhesive not silicone.. silicone won’t be that hard. And what your smelling is sitting water so please before you make a video know what your talking about. I’ve seen tubs last 20+ years and looked like they were installed yesterday if you clean and take care of it just saying because I’ve been an installer for bath fitters for 10 years and seen it first hand it’s a really good product as long as the homeowner follows the damn directions we give them

As far as refinishing - been there, done that - don't go there, Unless there's never a chance that you will drop something in the shower or lean up against the tub wearing jeans to clean it. That's not a Bathfitters liner.. ( Bathfitter is lifetime warranty)The black stuff is called primer not mold. Does look like it was put in before the tile wall which is a no no. Plus silicon does have to be cleaned or soap scum and hardwater deposits will build up which gives mold a place to grow. Nothing wrong with a properly installed liner. Definitely customers fault. To bad this guy doesn't no how to actually take one out..its not supposed to fit perfect to allow for expanding an extracting.

bransta81 To a person who has never replaced a tub you think it would, it’s not. This was done in one day, to replace a tub is a 3-7 day job, depending on the wall coverings chosen. The biggest issue is the walls surrounding a tub is built on the surface of the tub, these walls need to be demolished to remove the tub, not including replacing a lot of the sewer lines connected to the tub that never line up and will need to be replumbed. Reglazing is always the most affordable, sensible choice.

@thatlady7413
@thatlady7413 6 жыл бұрын
I would rather deal with the hassle of reinstalling a tub liner every 3 to 5 or even maybe 10 years. Tub liners are easy to install and is built to last a long time. its obvious the tub liner in this video was improperly installed. the real problem was water leaking behind the liner because the installer should have laid a separate thick layer of waterproof caulking along the edge of the new tub liner, let dry, then lay a waterproof caulking edging tape on top of that around the tub and then finish it off with another thick layer of waterproof caulking. this should be repeated around the drains and fittings. the tub liners are one size fits all and will not fit exactly snug in the old tub that's why a strong durable waterproof adhesive is used. however its good that it didn't, because the gaps enabled the old liner to be removed easily without damage to the tubs old finish. I personally hate and despise bathtub resurfacing. I think all of those businesses should be sued by the EPA. The strong toxic fumes takes 5 days to leave your home, even if the family remained out of the home during the resurfacing of their tub they still have to eventually come home and air the house out which will take 5 days or more to fully get all of the fumes out. A child or elderly person cannot be in the home until the fumes are completely gone. The fumes causes respiratory distress, eyes burning and headaches and dizziness. even if an exhaust fan and tube to blow the fumes outside was used during the resurfacing, the fumes will still be so strong and toxic that your neighbors would have to vacate their apartments also, because the fumes would somehow leak into their apartments and cause them to become sick also. the resurfacing paint take 2-3 days to dry before using, but I wait 2 weeks to a month. even then the resurfacing paint will begin to crack and peel within 3 months. each part of the resurfaced paint that peels, gives off a strong odor underneath it of the toxic fumes. By the 6 th month, the paint is either disintergrating into small bits and pieces or coming off in large strips. I never ever take baths in tubs that's been resurfaced. only showers.

Strong toxing fumes hahahahaha funny. Your perfume or hair spray are causing you more harm then these "toxic fumes" you so ignorantly talk about. Real issue here is ignorance. Both methods are amazingly good (when done properly of corse). It simply seems like it's worth gambling over 3 different refinishing technicians for one tub rather one liner instalation.. price wise. Strong toxic fumes hahahahaha wonder why plumbers air out suwers before going in yet no such high precaution is required when entering a paint manufacturing facility. Ding dong

Jokes aside tho. From all you have said it makes it perfectly clear that whatever was used to refinish that particular bathtub you are describing, it sounds like these diy epoxy kits they sell to the public at all hardware stores. These stink a lot (to the point where your eyes itch), never really dry and never really work in any way. Good thing about them is that professionals get to charge more for the removal of such an epic fail. These diy products really have a bad effect on health and your points are somewhat acceptable. Keep in mind that professional refinishers would have invested lots of time and reaserch into products that actually work rather buy the first thing thats advertised as a "bathtub paint". Even this clown calls his paint "liquid porcelain" which is nothing more then an industrial polymer. Basically planes, bridges, boats and ships are covered with porcelain right? Playing with words like liquid porcelain, refinishing and not painting and so on are other signs of ignorence since refinishing is the result of painting (as in bathtubs refinishing or even automotive refinishing) so these are tricks to figure out who's a bs and who actually know what they are involved into.
