Newbie tub refinisher here. Going through all your videos and taking notes. You posted a comment in a past video saying "topkote is great but a little tricky to work with". Im going to get the TK low voc package. What tip size do you recommend, 1.3? And what suggestion could you give on spraying the TK to help with the "tricky" part? Thank you very much for making all your videos.

Topkote can be tricky to spray at lower pressure, turn the pressure up 20% then normal and it lays like glass.

Tip size 1.3 is what I use. 1.3 or 1.4, either one will work.

@@bathtubrenew I have a Fuji minimite 5 (no air adjustment on the machine). I do use it with a Apollo 7700 gun. Roughly how many turns on the air adjustment valve (on the gun)? Thank you!!
@bathtubrenewКүн бұрын
@ I can’t remember…lol Just make sure the particles are spraying fine enough, the TK is a very high solids, that’s why it sprays better at higher pressure.

Do you use primer anymore? Only primer I use is zinzeer if I get a fisheyes. George told me to do that and it works perfect. Besides that I haven’t used any primer in 6 months. It’s prep, cross link, 2 light coats 2-3 main coats.

You should make a video talking about all the bad company’s and go in depth on why they are bad and what to look for and what not to look for in the codeines I feel like that would help a lot of refinisher out there or the ones who want to do good quality work

Me personally I never recommend caulking after refinishing. It makes the tub look unnatural especially when you pick a brighter white caulk/silicone. Not to mention if you do use silicone let’s say if you ever have to back and do a repair on a edge close to the silicone you’d have to tape try and tape the silicone off which is a hassle because as we all painters should know, silicone can’t and shouldn’t be painted. It will not stick and in the instance it does stick it does not stick for long. The paint will crack and fall off the silicone like it’s paper.

I’m 25 years old and been doing surface refinishing for 5 years now. The way I learned to spray “shiny” or as we call it “glass” is the fluid nozzle and air pressure nozzle are opened all the way lol. Takes ton of practice yes, getting used to the perfect distance so you don’t create runs or sags, got spray pattern which is normally a 50% overlap. But also another thing people don’t tell you is your mix ratio also plays a part in how shiny the outcome is. I don’t know what most refinishers use to mix their resins before spraying but we use lacquer thinner which is the ratio you wanna play with the most. Some people say only do 10% or 25% of lacquer but I say do however much you’re comfortable doing as long as you don’t run it. Obviously the thinner you make the mix their more careful you gotta be but it’s honestly the same if you make a thicker mix with less lacquer.

Great gyration! No, once the coating is cured nothing can leach out, it even seals in lead in older tubs.

I listened to the guy at the paint store. A national paint store,,NOT A BOX STORE,,and boy were YOU RIGHT and boy was HE WRONG!!! Now,I'm an auto body man,,and NEVER did a tub before. I know my prep work was spot on,,but the coating he sold us was a brush on. It produced a few runs in the finish. Nice shine and all. Did the chip repair epoxy, no problems there. Now,,,I've got to DA the runs out with 180,220,320 and 400 and I'm going to use a sponge brush,,as I do have a compressor and very high quality automotive spray guns...Sharpe and Binks.....but they don't provide any thinning directions as what to use. IE,,lacquer thinner,,enamel reducer...IDK.so I won't try spraying the 2nd coat. Thought with my automotive finishing experience, this would've been a walk in the park. BOY,,,was I wrong,,plus I got BAD ADVISE from the paint store. Hopefully watching your video will help me get a finished product as nice as yours,,BUT,,I am kicking myself in the ass for NOT watching any video's before I attempted this. You cleared up a few points for me and I'm going in for round 2. Thanks for this video,,and you can bet I won't be painting bathtubs any more...I'll stick to cars. They're easier😂😂

are you using midwest 4hgours ? and what caulking are you using ?
@dnazoom685013 күн бұрын
Best caulking to use for our job would be either something called seam seal which is usually only ordered online or if you want something readily accessible in store. Home Depot has something similar to seam seal called quad max I highly recommend that one over seam seal because it’s cheaper, can be bought in store, and seam seal isn’t something you can put in after the fact. It needs to be done before the coating process so you can coat is or else it’ll yellow over time. If you do go the quad max route from Home Depot just make sure it’s not the silicone version
