Charlie it is a apex tuner sold at long and McQuaid it was $20 here in canada and will work on both 6 and 12 strings also works on mandolin banjo ukulele etc etc

So the tuning is the same as a 6 string, what makes it an octave higher in tuning is the thinner string right? Except the B and high E strings, those are the same.

Bruce, the thinner strings are tuned and octave higher on the top four strings, and the same on the two lower. It looks like you are tuning them all to the same octave which is wrong. The point of a 12 string is to make it sound like you are playing two guitars at the same time. Best William

When you tune it down a whole step to make it easier to play do you need to adjust the truss rod? Would you need to change to higher gauge strings too if you turned down that far

It shouldn't make a big difference. The neck might need a tiny bit of relief adding, to compensate for reduced tension, but probably no more than a quarter turn.

Why worry? If you don't have 3 or 4 tuners laying around then what the hell is wrong with you? It was a pain in the ass to tune before tuners became super cheap. I mean you buy your bread sliced these days, why go back to the old days when you had to slice it yourself?

Change it to 432hz, instead of 440 hz and the strings gauge a lower number, example, high e ,2 strings in 0.008 instead of 2 .010 mm and so on , then you GONNA get a soft 12 string guitar , you can even bend the strings a whole step and a half, and finally have healthy finger for when u get to 60 or 70 years old and your stil want to pkay guitar,,jeje,,,

Jennifer Castillo I just learned this. After you tune it, go back to the fat strings and check them again. As you are tuning the thinner strings it can knock the first ones out just a tad. So go back and retune.

For beginners just as well to do it this way theres really no one out there explaining exactly how to do it an octa e down and what strings go down an octave from what ive got out of it all. All ive done and seen anyone else do with a 12 string is the same as in this video.

thats interesting because I bought a used 12 and I havent restrung it yet (or even tuned it lol). my main elec guitar is now tuned a whole step down and I was considering just tuning the 12 string that same way so writing songs/overdubbing etc will be easier

Well I used 9s for like 25 years on an Ibanez electric. Then I bought a 2nd used Ibanez electric and it had 11s on it....which I got used to. I played it in standard for like 2 years but I liked to experiment with drop D, Drop C, C# whatever. But I hated getting confused on my 6th string root chords etc so finally I just tuned the whole thing down to D standard...which is nice. So I figure ill tune the 12 to D also. I like to play with openD sometimes too so keeping it in D standard will make it easier to go back and forth

You dont tune to standard e , it puts too much tension on the neck , tune to d standard and prolong the life of your guitar
