Can someone explain to me why filing down the dan moi makes it go LOWER? My very basic understanding of instruments is that the heavier the vibrating object, the lower the note. So I don't understanding why making the dan moi lighter by filing it makes the note lower. Thanks in advance! PS: Great video, short and to the point, thank you Jaan

Hey! It depends where you file. In this video I file the tongue in the middle which makes the tip of the tongue heavier in relation to the middle of the tongue, thus making it vibrate at lower frequency - at least that's how I understand it. Filing the tip of the tongue should make the pitch higher.

@@meisterjaan very interesting, thank you! I can't wait to receive my first Dan moi tomorrow to try and understand it 😄

I knew about the fix, the 'tongue' needs to move freely. I haven't tried tuning one yet. Thanks for the tip!

do you by any chance know how to repair a broken dan moi?!
@meisterjaan6 жыл бұрын
If it's really broken and not just a problem of the tongue hitting the frame a little bit then there's not much one can do. Some have tried melting (like soldering) a piece of tin on the broken bit but this results in a damper sound which isn't too good for playing. For a master it's easier to make a new danmoi than fix the old one.

Thx, now I can finally stop hoping to fix it somehow, and hope I will find a similar sounding one... Tin is not the strongest stuff to bind/glue/solder something, guess it's not worth to try it even, cause i'm sure it will break faster than the time it took to melt it together again... It was really my favorite, it's such a pity that you never know what you're gonna get soundwise when ordering them online... guess i'll have to order a lot of several pieces when I find it for a good price sometime in the future and hope to get lucky!! thx for your info!

You can find some good bulk deals on ebay if you order 50 of them at a time. I have done that a few times, selected favorites and then spread the ones I don't need to my friends or someone who wants them.
@ricofleurima60346 жыл бұрын
allright, around how much per piece will they be in that quantity?! I could sell the rest at festival markets in the summer yes, good idea! thx!
@meisterjaan6 жыл бұрын
Right now I could find a deal that's 135 usd + 30 shipping for 50 instruments. So that would make it 3,3 usd for a danmoi.

Can you make it a half step higher?

Indeed, many of the cheap dan moi have a buzz and need a bit of grinding. But it's not supposed to be tuned to "E" or any other western note. Not much point in doing so, unless you plan to incorporate it in western music.
@meisterjaan9 жыл бұрын
+Belzebut III I agree. But as I have a lot of western instruments and I record music using jew's harps and also my other instruments, I have a chromatic set of danmois just in case. Though yeah, when some danmoi has an especially perfect sound, I don't tune it not to risk ruining the sound.
