Learn how to use this simple t shirt trick to tune your snare and get rid of the annoying ringing sound and stop snare drum ringing the right way. Paul Cookson, a Nashville session drummer, visits the studio today to help us get this snare in tune for the worship stage.
First, buy new drum heads, get your tools, drum key, and an old t shirt.
Remove the head and rim from the top head.
Cut a strip about 1-2 inches wide from an old shirt. I did about 2 inches
Put the shirt across the top and then put the new head on. Hand tighten the lugs and then use your ear to get the right tone on all the lugs... watch Paul.
We talked a little bit about the other tools you can use, if you are new to this... I have a drum dial that helps me get the right tension... but if you can tune by feel that seems to be better.

Thanking you very much, Still fairly new to drumming here, Just brought my first metal snare as I like the way it sounds but the ring was annoying me whilst trying to tune it, new snare sounds absolutely amazing now. Thank you again.

I remember doing this to a cheap steel snare drum as a kid. Sometimes did it to the bottom head as well. I used strips of old sheets. Later, started to use the gel dampeners.

I cut out a half inch strip of microfiber cloth and placed it the same way. It left enough ring without choking the aluminum 14 x 6.5 snare. This works much better than tape, moongel, oring, or snareweight for me. This really helps to get more various tunings. For toms, I placed a strip on top of the batter head and pinched under the rim inside the closest two tension rods. I prefer not to damage the wood bearing edges this way. This eliminates the sympathetic ring without choking or altering its character. It just thickens the tone which I like. It seems like the industry tries to push solutions like overly thick pre-muffled heads and gimmicky disposable stuff. Thanks for the excellent tip.

I found that if you loosen the lugs the 2 lugs on each side of the snare wires the ring almost completely disappears.

If the bottom head is uneven you need the see if the mylar is coming off the ring.

It sounds good...but it also seems like a lot of work when there are so many other dampeners you can put on the batter head much quicker and easier. As long as you get your desired sound/tone...do you.

Well, first off it looks like a Mapex Tomahawk snare you have. I have one myself. It’s my least used snare and probably because it’s just a cheap snare to begin with but good drumheads and good snare wires also make all the difference in the world. I virtually never use stock snare wires and most of the time use Puresound 20 strand blaster wires for everything from rock to jazz, but different head combos. I will say, the snare has a lot of ring but I saw the Remo emblem but not sure what head it was but for me it has to be a Remo coated controlled sound black dot if you want ring to go away, but a Remo Powerstroke 77 will make it even more dead so I don’t like the tshirt effect here unless you’re Alex Van Halen who always used a felt strip under his batter drum head. Just too dead for me and you can’t open it up if you want to with a T-shirt and head already placed on the drum. Probably a good thing I was a mechanic in the Air Force because just like this video talking about “old drums have dampeners” I have a custom drum I love that I took out to my shop and drilled holes to fit a dampener inside and now it’s awesome to have it sing however I want it too on any particular song. I only have one snare with a piece of felt running across it, with a clear Remo controlled sound black dot on top and that’s in case I record a song and need that Alex Van Halen sound. That Mapex Tomahawk just needs good heads, snare wires, and proper tuning and it won’t ring like that. Only thing I like about this video is I thought I was the only guy that torqued my inner lug screws as soon as I bought a drum whether at a store or shipped to me. I love to play drums but I consider myself a gear guy that has had mad scientist experiments on so many kits, snares, heads, etc that I can hear tones in my head based on what snare someone presents me and says they want. Being a drum tech would be a dream, but how do you get into that business?Lol.

"And they all sound the same"...actually they really do not! BUT, that's ok..still sounds good...and that's what's important and Paul felt that!

I used these suggestions on a 1960s Slingerland and SNAGGED IT! Batter was an Evans UV1, snare was an Evans 300, PureSound 20 strand snares. Use a felt strip or your wife’s nylons. Bottom is tight and snappy, top is to midrange-TERRIFIC.

Mis named the video. "How to ruin the sound profile of a Mapex Tomahawk." Lolz. Yeah that trick works but it's a classic situation of right drum for the right application. You wouldn't use a 5150 in place of a twin reverb. Likewise, an Amazon wooden snare would get you way closer than hacking a steel snare. This is a hack to Work with what ya got. I had a Tomahawk and while the ringing was cool I used their snare trade in program to swap for an Exterminator. It's just the right drum for the job.

@@WorshiptheKingMusic I have no idea why people in the comments are talking about the snare bed. It's the area on either side of the bottom of the shell where the snares go. It has absolutely nothing to do with this video.
