I think you would have had room to just use the naked tail-stock, not sure i would have bothered with the mount. Also, I think I would have done the J cut after removing the tenon. That wall was flexing quite a bit! Even with that, its a nice piece :)

I waited through this whole video to see how you would cut the J slot. What gives?

I found this quite disappointing - it’s more about a beginner’s woodturning lesson rather than making a yarn bowl. There was no mention of where exactly on the outside of the bowl the slit was cut to maximise the strength of the sides of the bowl once cut. Also, with a slit like this the wool is going to come out very easily and the curve should have gone around another turn to stop that happening. The drilling of the hole from the inside was interesting and didn’t show how the large drill managed to sit inside the bowl. That is why I have given this a “dislike”.
