Is there a limit to the size of vine that you can airlayer? The one I’m wanting to do is a wisteria vine about 6 inches in diameter. Also, the part of the vine that I want is straight without any secondary branches. So think of a straight 6 ft section of tree trunk without any secondary branches. Is this possible?

No I would not do that as the idea is to get a single row of roots at the cut point. If you induce roots further back as well you will not have a good nebari which is the idea of air layering for bonsai. Sure if its for the garden but not for Bonsai. Does that make sense? Thank you for watching.

I used the exact same technique on my mom's wisteria a few days ago, but I had no idea whether I was doing it right, because it's my very first attempt at air-layering. Seeing your video now, it seems that I did do it right. I used hypnum moss instead of sphagnum moss though, and I wonder if I did it to early. There were new buds coming out, and it's pretty much Spring already here in the South of France.

As long as the plant is moving it will be ok, either way you should be ok. As long as you get growth beyond the layer then all should be well. If it was me I would not let it flower past your air layer to concentrate on green growth. Let me know how it goes. Good luck.

@Bunjinboy1
@Bunjinboy1 Жыл бұрын
Hello couple of things to look at, first open it up carefully and see if you have any callus on upper section, if you do then moss it back up and wet it well roots will emerge soon. Secondly check it has not bridged the gap in your cut if it has you will need to cut it back again otherwise it won’t root. The air layer is the only real way to get flowering new tree quick, cuttings are slow to take and can take years to flower. Seed also can take years to reach maturity and flower. Keep in touch and let me know how you get on.

Hi Rickie. Glad you have had success. Make sure you have a good amount of growth and the roots have gone drown except the tips. Probably another 2 weeks will do it. Hello that’s great to hear, the first white roots are great to see but it’s not best to remove the layer until these have turned brown and got a bit woody. You should not have to remove any foliage but tightly wire or tie it in so as it can’t move.pot up with general Bonsai mix. If you can get enough root and cut off before mid August then it will over winter with some shelter easily. If you go past august then you can just leave on the tree. Hi I have not done a 6inch bit but last year I did two 4 inch bits. I is off and flowering now and other did not root but still growing ok. I plan in a week or two to open it up check the callus is ok and reapply hormone and fresh new moss and hope it roots this year. All the time the section above is active it should grow and root. So as long as your 6ft length has foliage above the cut then it should root it may be slower to do so but the better the foliage grows above the better your chances so don’t prune any tendril growth while the air layer is on progress. Good luck and keep me updated. Thank you Andy.
