I like the analogy of squeezing an orange...if you squeeze an orange, apple juice doesn't come out; orange juice comes out, obviously. The same with human disposition, when life squeezes a person (via stress, conflict, unexpected catastrophe, illness, loss, rejection, pressure, etc.) what comes out of that person is what's inside that person. People often feel comfortable, think they're good, might be doing "ok" on the surface...until life starts to squeeze them. I like using mindfulness meditation for getting out of my own head, not letting the squeeze get out of control, books like "30 Days to Reduce Anxiety" by Harper Daniels have helped me be more mindful of my disposition, which hasn't always been a good one.

This guy is why the stoic philosophy was so successful. Life will inevitably bring you hardship, and you will crumble unless you develop your character with intentionality. Meaning becoming more disciplined in all aspects of life, more brave, more selfless etc. Of course most core religions preach these things as well, but ultimately, life forces you to realize that you’re not as good of a person as you thought and it’s up to you to fix it.

Seen hundreds of hours of Jimmy the comic, the host or performer. I’m only 3mins inside, and realise how different, the real Mr Carr is. Nice guy.

Once met Jimmy in Halifax Town UK. I shook his hand and must of winked at the same time. He made a point of commenting on it and that it displayed confidence and that he liked that. I was shocked at how present he was in the moment and that he noticed something like that. I took confidence from the encounter.

I think people forget that some the best comedians, both today and historically, are at the top of the game because they profoundly understand people and the world around them. Clever bloke is Jimmy. I enjoy both his comedy and his philosophical outlook on life and humanity.

It makes me think of the saying "You're only as happies as your unhappiest child." Your disposition is your foundation in terms of satisfaction. Happiness isn't the goal, but if you want to attain it's brief flashes, then focus on that foundation rather than the potential ceiling you may not even reach.

Money only amplifies whatever you are: If you're sad person, money might make you sadder. If you're a happy person, money might make you happier. Key is finding out how to be content at any level of wealth. Once you're happy whilst poor, this is a good foundation to then learn how to become rich. Sad people get sadder with money because they were disappointed to find that money is not the thing that increases happiness levels but merely multiplies it. Negative 1 multiplied by 100 becomes negative 100.

Any tradesman who works onsite understands anxiety. Its that anxiety that keeps us up at night , methodically planning and thinking of every situation that could go wrong. Its that anxiety that makes us, it our plan to succeed. " when we jump, the noose just gets tighter".

If you think you may be depressed, try this. Find interviews of people with traumatic brain injury or amputation. If you don't feel as hopeless and lost for the future as they do. You likely need to change your personality or environment a bit.

Jimmy Carr is a great example of the on-stage persona and his edgy humour being used by his haters to dismiss him as being intellectually backwards. He’s far more layered than they will give him credit. Yes he’s an acquired taste comedian, and I’m a big fan therefore biased, but behind it all he’s a deep thinker.

Even if it's situational it's no less valid especially in your 20s when your brain is still developing. He is in his 40s and seemingly confronting overuse of mental illness terms but it just reeks of BS tough love.

@@kris3451 Most decent psychiatrists will suggest you medication and therapy if in dire straights. Being temporarily medicated for "depression" to stabilize you in an impossibly difficult situation could help you change it along with therapy. Though I'm against overprescribing or making everything purely biological, it's not unreasonable to be on meds for a short while if it would benefit someone. The problem is medicalizing issues without therapy or taking a categorically anti-med stance if you can use them as an adjunct to therapy. But yeah, finding such judicious psychiatrists and not falling into "mental illness" culture is probably not easy given the cultural norms of recent.
