I went into fsx.cfg and turned "HIGHMEMFIX=" off by putting the forward slashes in (//) to turn that off. I also did the same for "AffinityMask=". I turned those switches off, turned off those commands, and my graphics are SOooooo much better! I am running a new computer with crazy abilities (Powerspec B745), and it was slow to load my Megascenaryearth satellite imagery. I was quite pissed! WTF, over? I turned off the aforementioned "switches" in fsx.cfg, and it is running as smooth and flawlessly as I had dreamed it might. Thank you, HK, for the advice and a direction to take... Every system is different. We all have to do things particular to our own computers. I like to use the double forward slash (//) to turn particular codes off in a cfg file. That makes it easy to turn them ON or OFF, without deleting that line of code.

The Steam edition does not need these fsx.cfg manual tweaks. There have been improvements in the core software taking our more modern machines into account. On the same computer, FSX Steam runs considerably faster out of the box than my FSX boxed edition ever did, no matter how I tweaked the boxed edition.

Changing Nvidia frame limiter to 30fps and fsx frame limiter to Unlimited made the biggest difference for me. Gained 4 fps!

the gixxerman Im gonna put a FPS testers on it while playing and post the specs .But i set my GUP to 60 and at one point 80 FPS and it played fine. Every computer is different especially custom builds. MY specs are i5 3570k 16gb memery, Asus P8 Z68 MB, 1000 watt Corsair PSU, Asus GTX 760 GPU. I did increase the voltage on the CPU through the Motherboard Asus work suite. as well as the DIGI VRM frequency increased.

I have AMD an older 7850, but everything i found is to leave the AMD settings alone is probably the best thing. Every specific AMD adjustment i have tried either didn't work, or made things worse. Try the new amd 16.9.1 driver i'm running it now and FSX runs pretty good here.

The problem I have is that FSX rewrites the FSX.cfg file everytime I shut down FSX (not when launching it). I have to go back each time and check all these settings before launching it. Most every time FSX will change the "TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=" back to 1024. This is very aggrevating.

Flight sims are actually not really suppose to even reach 60 fps. They are smooth enough at 30 fps. I play sometimes thinking its 30 fps and its actually 15. Yes 15 fps. If it was a shooter, I would be going crazy.

Hey! Thanks for watching :-) FSX doesn't look very realistic out of the box, that means that you need to have third party add'ons installed into your sim for it to look really good. If you for example see a person fly a 737, they are probably flying the PMDG 737 NGX. A lot of people also use REX for different textures, and for scenery many people use ORBX. ORBX FTX Global is a huge scenery pack from ORBX, that enhances the scenery wherever you fly. But there is sooo many different scenery's you can download (Freeware and Payware) that will make FSX/P3D look amazing. I hope this helped you out a bit ;-) and when I recorded this video I used: ORBX FTX England, A2A C172, Active Sky next and FS Water Configurator

The simple answer is that FSX is an old game, old architecture and poorly optimized for every machine.

might be too simple but are you setting it high priority from task manager and still getting the problem? I play on my laptop and am getting 50-60 with pretty much max settings aside from land detail and AA
