OMG! Finally an instructional video on flipping a fishing kayak that is NOT stripped down. THANK YOU! Too many "instructional" videos out there with stripped kayaks, people removing their pfd, not controlling their paddle, etc... Great job guys! If your not in great shape or just old like me, the rope trick makes flipping the kayak sooooo easy!

Awesome. I just purchased a fishing kayak a couple weeks ago. First kayak ever lol. 12' sit on top. I took her on her maiden voyage this past weekend on a relatively calm lake and stayed in the shallow water rocking her to get used to the stability and practicing my rowing techniques. I can swim well but still had a pfd just in case. I can say even still, I was too scared to go into the deeper waters(30-50ft).. not sure why. I feel like I shouldn't fear flipping, but I may need to intentionally flip a few times like you guys did just to get over that fear. Thanks for the instruction!

Hi Owen! First off, always always always wear your PFD! The vast majority of drownings happen with people who are not wearing a PFD, many of these people have it near by "just in case" but never get a chance to put it on. Wear it, even if it looks "dorky". Secondly, definitely practice flipping and re-entering your kayak in calm shallow water, or even in a pool. I'd say don't be afraid to venture into deeper waters, but honestly you shouldn't do anything you're not comfortable with. Also go out with a buddy whenever possible! Thanks for watching!

Panic kills. If when you are wearing a PFD, you still fear drowning in deep water, then you should start swimming with the PFD AWAY from the kayak until you overcome that fear

How did all that water get inside your kayak? Do the hatches leak even when closed? Thanks
@offtheyak8357
@offtheyak8357 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, thanks for watching. Yes the hatches are sadly not 100% waterproof even when fully closed, also if fully submerged small amounts will make their way thru places where things like the mesh nets are screwed in, however I believe on the Oasis the spot responsible for the most water entering is the very front hatch on the nose of the kayak.

@@offtheyak8357 Hi, thanks for the reply. It's a bit concerning that the kayak fills up with water when you flip it. How much water was inside? How many flips did you do? And can you use the bildge pump while in the ocean? A video of what to do if your kayak is full of water while out at sea would be helpful. Is it worth putting pool noodles inside your kayak? I heard that some people do this? Thanks
@offtheyak8357

@@Alexxx---101 Hey Alex, so to be honest it's totally normal for basically any kayak to get water in it when flipping, they aren't designed to be upside down on the ocean. Even when right side up some water can get inside if there's any amount of spray/chop. It takes a really significant amount of water to become a real threat to your safety while out on the water. Even the amount of water that was inside our kayak after flipping repeatedly was not a dangerous amount. I don't recall exactly how many times we flipped, but it was quite a few, and we also left it upside down while explaining what we were doing. In a real life situation you would be unlikely to flip that many times or leave it upside down for extended periods of time. As for the bilge pump, you can pump it anytime anywhere, if we were out on the open ocean and discovered a troubling amount of water in the yak (has never happened) we would simply open the center hatch in between either the front or back (probably back) persons legs, and pump out the water. The Hobie kayaks come with built in foam blocks inside the kayak to help with flotation should it become filled with water, if your kayak doesn't have built in foam blocks it certainly wouldn't hurt to add some. Also thank you for the comment about doing a video about what to do if your kayak is full of water out at sea, we will try to think of a way to provide a good instructional video on this. I would like to emphasize however that getting water I the kayak is usually not something to stress out about hugely unless you're in a sit-in kayak instead of a sit on top kayak. A: It's normal to get some water inside, and B: It would take a very large amount of water inside to pose a real threat. Just check your kayak routinely for hull breaches/cracks, especially at any point where the kayak usually makes contact with a carrier/cart or your vehicle, have some foam blocks inside, carry a bilge pump at all times, and of course always wear a PFD, and you should be totally fine!

@@offtheyak8357 Hi, thanks a lot for taking the time to reply. You have put my mind at rest and I really appreciate that. I'm obviously new to kayaking. And I've bought an old ocean prowler big game kayak as my first yak. Didn't want to spend a fortune on my first yak but at the same time it makes me a little nervous knowing the yaks an antique lol. I've done some water tests by filling the hull with a hose and it didn't leak which is good but then I put the scupper plugs in and filled the top with water and that's when I notived I had 2 very slow drips coming from near the scupper holes. So I plan to plastic weld over these areas. I do worry about the end hatch at the front of my yak as its an old design but apparently the big game is really stable as its quite wide. Plus I've drilled about 20 holes in my yak customizing it with fishing gear - I did a good job and the holes are above the water line but we will see I guess..... Anyway everything I've learned so far is from youtube so thanks for uploading videos. 1 other question that I can't find on youtube.... How do you use the scupper plugs? Sounds stupid but do you put them in while you paddle to where your going? Or put them in once you arrive at fishing spot? Should they be used at anchor? Or when drifting? Great channel - I've subscribed
@offtheyak8357
@offtheyak8357 5 жыл бұрын
@@Alexxx---101 These are all very good things to be aware of, and definitely a good idea to try to stop any slow leaks you might have. Your idea of pool noodles is not a bad idea either, and I still highly highly recommend a bilge pump and always wearing your PFD, as well as getting a personal locator beacon, this can be one of the most critical tools in search and rescue situations if ever needed. But I wouldn't let fear of something happening deter you, which it sounds like it isn't, so great! Just go at your own pace, don't over extend yourself while out, look up and follow basic safety videos on kayaking and boating and you should be fine!

its also easier to unflip the kayak by just riding at the top end (front or back) ,, when youre riding at the top end, the other end of the kayak would tilt up and then you move or flip your whole body on the water while holding and riding on the kayak... it would be an easy way...

The water is flat as a pool table, that isn't REALISTIC! You aren't going to flip when the water and wind are like that. You should flip your kayak in typical conditions with both wind and waves!
