Alex, glad everyone was ok!! I have the 2.5 Suzuki side mount from feel free, on my 10.6 kayak, with yak-gear outriggers. But I always wear my PFD, and if I'm alone, I stay in sight of land. And have probably everything from tow rope, extra PFD, and spare paddle, clothes,. My bow storage is full, incase I end up on some stranded island, lol... I also installed a usb charging port in my cockpit, with my Garmin striker 4, with GPS, extra batteries, lights, bildge pump, vhf radio, glow sticks. I'm very over prepared. But you never know, especially when you're alone. And it's only my 2nd full season on the water. Last year I just went out maybe 400 yards, just to see how I would set up my kayak. God bless, be safe. Your flip video's, I recommend and have practiced many times, in shallow water, on hot days. 🙏🎣🤟

This is the very reason I taught my kids, and myself, how to both tip our kayaks over in the first place, and then once in the water how to re-flip the kayak and then enter it again in a controlled environment. Its just like riding a motorcycle, doesn't matter how good you are, eventually you will go down.

In 20 years have only flipped once and that coming in thru the large surf down near Hatteras. Don't think it's luck, maybe more about not loving kayaking in rough waters or bad weather. The weather in the video would have sent me home before this could have happened.

Right hand grabs the PDL to pull it over, and left hand used to grab & hold the yak. Left hand maintains a firm hold on the yak, pull yourself up so that your right hand grabs the far side, bringing your head just past the center of the yak as you continue rolling your lower body back into the yak. Center your weight within the kayak while the scuppers drain the kayak. Done. For further clarification: re-entering is akin to launching oneself, using the side of a swimming pool. Your launching pull becomes a push, helping you reach for the far side wall. Don't forget to swim with your legs. Every little bit of propulsion helps you since the kayak will be lower due to the water it scoops when you flip it. Don't wait. Pull/flip towards you with your right hand, catch/control with your left (so you don't knock yourself out trying to catch a kayak to the face or head), launch yourself by combining swimming kicks with pull. The object is to get your head close to the far side you lunge for. If your navel gets to the gear trac, roll the rest into the kayak. It's one fluid movement. Matter of fact, keep your a** in 3-6 feet & practice it until its 2nd nature. I thought he was taking a dump until I turnt up the volume!😂😂😂

I don't have a pedal yak, so I don't really know. But I often wonder why pedal guys don't break out their paddles if they get caught out in bad weather. A paddle offers huge advantages in balancing, bracing and quick manoeuvring that a rudder and pedal drive don't have. Am I wrong?

First of all, you should not go anywhere beyond your pool if you don't feel comfortable to flip your kayak by yourself and hop on in the rough water. That is the very first skill you should practice before you go anywhere. Otherwise, you are playing with fire. That is why I do not like PA - very heavy. I also don't like those pedal drives, if you flip and get hit by that Native Slayer drive, you are done. So far, nobody has designed anything better than outback, the only real competitors are paddle kayaks, such as stealth if you feel very comfortable with paddle. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't understand basic safety issues and go offshore without full evaluation of risks.

I leash floats to everything instead of to the boat. If you flip the boat, all those leashed things will make it that much harder to get it back upright. I can always go collect a few floats afterward. Also, Having a longer rope attached to the opposite side of the boat will make it easy to flip. Put the rope over the boat > your feet on the edge and pull.

I would be caution about using leashes. If you flip and one of the leash wrap around your neck and next wave pushes a kayak.....It is also difficult to flip the kayak if you have multiple rods hanging around on the leashes.
@southforked3233
@southforked3233 5 жыл бұрын
@@Beyondthebreakers my leashes are very short. They are not designed to be used while fishing. Just to lock in the rods to the rod holders. Think about less than three inches. When I flip the rods stay put and recovery is not affected. No gear is more important than your life. I also only take two rods offshore with a third being a small cheap snatch rig rod that's less than $10 at Walmart.

I don't suppose the height of the OT predator seat has anything much to do with it. Pilot error?. The red Kayak was an OTP and maybe the other one too, you both handled the conditions and kept centre and safe. It doesn't matter if you're sitting lower, if you don't ride the waves properly. Being out in lightning is a common hazard in that part fo the world, but if you know its coming, I reckon you should avoid. I don't like the idea of my flag up even if its not conductive. Personally, I don't go out in choppy seas much, as its more enjoyable to fish in calm to moderate conditions. I get it, that for a bunch going out together, it can be exciting to go after fish in the swell and chop, but you need to keep your eyes wide open and keep central balance. Clip everything down and use the pedal drive as a lever to flip the Yak. Great informative video and shows the importance of remaining calm and focused.
@AliexFolgueira
@AliexFolgueira 3 жыл бұрын
No user error the predator sits too high and easily flips, you just need the right wave and there you go
@liamgarvey33
@liamgarvey33 3 жыл бұрын
@@AliexFolgueira I respectfully disagree. Any Yak just needs the right wave and the wrong moves and there you go. Having been out in rough seas with mix of Hobie's, OTP and several others, the OT are much better than most in deep water/rough seas, so long as you know what you're doing. Let's hear what the chap in the vid has to say. Meanwhile, we all have different experience and different opinions.

@@AliexFolgueira Yep I watched your predator and 120 PDL flip videos, all very informative and proves that if you push your weight off centre your going to flip. My point is generally about how the OTP handles in open sea, cutting through the chop and when you're not going out of your way to flip it, as compared to other kayaks. Very useful videos, they show you exactly how far you can push the design. I like that I can stand easily up in the OTP in decent condition and yes, I can flip, if I make the effort. Your about the only one doing these kinda flip reviews, keep it up.

No, flipping over in the ocean isnt funny at all. Props to you and your friend to help Geek out and not just film to get click bait. I know one thing, I'm locking my pedal drive down now, not only will it prevent it from sinking to the bottom if I flip, its going to make it easier to get my kayak upright should it flip.
@GeekOnTheWater
@GeekOnTheWater 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed Nub, grabing the drive and using my weight i was able to flip it upright myself. Without the drive it would have been 10 times more difficult. Just another reason I like the PDL!

The most important things in life are this: 1.) Relationship with (God everyday, ie., daily bread), 2.) Relationship with spouse (daily submission & honoring), 3.) Relationship to children (cherishing with tender loving words, time, actions & character). Everything else is an overflow of grace, the balance & dependency upon our one God, LORD JESUS, the TRINITY!
