How to Unclog a PUR Water Filter (Slow Drain Fix)

This video shows the recommended way to fix a clogged or slow draining PUR water filter. This may also work on other similar water filters.

Maybe it has to do with how long you've had the filter in storage. There was a supply shortage due to some legal BS, and when I found some filters I racked up for like a year. I just opened my second box containing 3 filters and I would fill it and go workout for 3 hours and there'd still be more water up top than bottom. Think how long its been sitting unused may be a factor. Water is everything.

Should it really take over an hour to filter the water? Mine is brand new and it's literally filtering about two drips of water per second. I tried doing what you say to do. It doesn't work. A 38 dollar piece of garbage.

Rinsing, soaking, shaking--nothing will make them go faster. I tried multiple 3X filters and they all had the same result. Returned for the normal 2X filters, and they work as fine as they should. I'm glad I found this. I moved to a new area and the water is very bleachy tasting. So I got one of these and it helps immensely, but it seems to take forever to actually have water go through it. It takes literally hours for it to filter the top reservoir (full) to the bottom. If I don't top it off every day I find myself running out.

Yea seems like the more stuff it has to take out of the water the faster it slows down. When I change a filter it slows to a trickle after about a week or days if I let it run dry. I fill it up about twice a day to because it seems like it filters faster if I keep the top mostly filled.

@@brynbailey5482 Ultimately, cleaning didn't work all that well. I actually bought an Aquasana 5200 undersink system and installed it. Took a couple of hours due to some old plumbing and poor design in this house, but it's a game changer. Works awesome, filters last 6 months, water tastes amazing. If you can swing it, it's a far better option. And really, it's saved me money and a lot of headaches, due to the fact that we have hard water here as well.

I'll second that! I just used the simple technique on a new Kirkland cartridge that wouldn't filter properly, and I'm happy to report the method worked for me too. :)

Give these PUR filters a try.... amzn.to/3Xk3Qoc They are a new improved filter that filter 2x as fast. And also don't need to soak for 15 minutes before first use, like the older longer filters, just run under water for 15 seconds and its good to pop in and use

Sorry this comment is super old, but one of the main reasons of the clogging is the formation of a large air bubble in the filter, which is why the shaking is an important step in the method to break the air bubble free

No there is not a Filter that would do that, unless you get the PUR filter that connects directly to the sink.

Running water is a good idea, but I suggest only use cold water... I read on the pur web page that water above 82° will destroy the filter.😅

I would try a new filter, and that should change it. If you still have the same problem with a new filter, I would contact the company to see what they can do for you

My tub faucet is dripping faster then this filter system. I did what you suggested, now it drips 3 drops per 2 second instead of one drop per 2 second. I am calling the company as soon they open- 9 am ET.

@@RobSomeKnowledge I got this pitcher at BJ’s and a happily dumped the box and all. It came with two filter in a golden wrap and have no clue what type it is. I called them and the dude was sarcastic and not helpful and I hung up on him. Then I sent an e mail and a video of one drop of water at every 4 second.

@ildikogaspar3421 yeah so I’ve come to the conclusion that PUR customer service is pretty incompetent and kinda just sucks. I made a video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHrUo4yAnNacec0 ) showing how to remove the spout from this dispenser to clean it, I have an older model and the newer models apparently come with a tool to remove this spout. But customer service told me my spout isn’t removable even though I did it using 2 pen caps to remove it instead of the newer tool. 🤣. Such a joke. I haven’t had too many problems with the actual filters but if/when this dispenser ever breaks or cracks on me, I will not be buying another PUR product

I have the same on but what causes the little black specs floating at the bottom is it safe to drink

The black specs are just activated charcoal from inside the filter. From what I read online they are harmless if ingested but do your own research and make your own decision with that. I don’t have problems with the charcoal coming out of the filter too much. Make sure you follow the priming procedure that the manufacturer suggests before using the filter for the first time and that should prevent most of the specs from ending up in your water. I personally don’t drink them the few times I’ve seen 1 or 2 of them floating

It’s more about fixing something that you already have and have already payed for. You buy a car knowing at some point it’s going to need maintenance or some kind of repairs right? Most water filters I’ve used run into this problem at some point or another. It’s just a matter of the filter media shifting around inside and becoming a blockage. Be my guest and engineer a filter that NEVER does this and you will become quite wealthy; I guarantee.

I've had Brita's as well and still saw this problem, I think it could partially be your water supply quality also. My water is pretty hard in my location, so I think that could be some of the reason people experience this from the mineral deposits clogging the filter which is why this works to kind of break up the combination of the minerals collected, and the original carbon granules of the filter. Have you had PURs as well, and had a problem with them?

The PUR 3x filter is trash. It takes absolutely FOREVER to filter water. You’ll have to wait more than 10 hours for a full round of filtered water (this is from a smaller reservoir too). Just settle for a cheaper brand, or the cheaper version of PUR filters. The 3x filter is also heinously expensive.
