For better results put the plunger in the water at an angle to where you fill the plunger with water letting the air bubble out. you want to push water down the pipe not air. It’ll work wayyy better.

Before placing it in the toilet you should bend the rubber cup as much as possible to fill it up with water then plunge. Plunging with water pressure is more effective than it with the bell of the plunger filled with air

This works well for older styles that have matching drain hole shapes, i.e. round. It doesn't work nearly as well when the plunger is round like in this video but the hold is rectangular like many modern toilets.
