I was trying to follow the zip extension method.. When I open the folder named "worksheets", all my worksheets are listed with bin extensions instead of xml extensions. Apart from this problem, three more files and one extra folder are found. sheet1, sheet2 and sheet3 are with bin extensions. BinaryIndex1, BinaryIndex2 and BinaryIndex3 - three more files also appear along with an folder named _rels. If I could attach a screenshot, it would be easier. How can I solve the bin extensions issue?

Guys, For this hack to work , please follow the instructions to the dot. Don't overdo like me by zipping & unzipping using Win RAR or editing the XML with Notepad++. Use Wordpad & inbuilt Compressing Utility as mentioned in the video. FYI, the same logic can be extended to unlock the Workbook also. Thanks a lot dude ! You just saved me lots of time of copying the contents to new excel and also from installing harmful macros :) #Worked for MS Office Excel 2016

I see a couple things that are questionable. 1. The original file extension was .xlsx After removing the protection. You renamed it to .xls. Now upon opening, you get a warning stating that you are using an older format. Because the older version file extension is .xls. The Excel you are using now. Uses a file extension of .xlsx Now the question is. Can you just rename it back to .xlsx instead of .xls. So you dont get the warning. 2. When removing the protection.

I get the error - "The file you are trying to open unlocked.xls is in a different format than specified by the file extension. Verify that the file is not corrupted and is from a trusted source before opening the file. I made sure to change it back from a zip to xls, what could be wrong?

I failed to save the edited sheet1.XML because my computer keeps telling me the .xml file is read-only. But then I checked the properties of sheet1.xml and the "Read-only" checkmark is grayed out but unchecked. May have something to do with my company's security setting. Thanks, it's work on Excel 2016. But change file to extension .xlsx (in my case I "save as" the file) first is a must before to get succeed result when unzip the file step. Because I have excel file with .xls extension following your procedure always read damaged when it came to unzip step. Anyway ... THANKS!!

It is a little more simple than deleting that whole line. Just delete the encrypted 4 character password inside the " " marks. Leaving no space between them. "" like this. Then when you go back and open excel. All you have to do is click the unprotect button and you are good to go.

This trick can be used to unlock the protected sheets. You are getting this error because your excel workbook is protected or locked with password. So for I don’t have any workaround for this workbook protection. If I find a way I’ll keep you posted.
