Tesla introduced this adapter a year ago and I immediately bought one to use like a “spare tire”. But, Tesla Superchargers are located everywhere we road trip and Tesla prices are lower. Sadly, I’ve never used it. This video is making me try it to ensure it works.

EVgo should consider replacing the session fee with an idle and/or congestion fee. Prices shouldn’t encourage people to charge longer than necessary.

You really come to appreciate Tesla's dedication to design when you use a Supercharger compared to CCS. NACS is just so much easier to use due to its smaller size, while CCS is fairly large and clunky to operate.

I’d consider this if alternatives were cheaper but paying $250 for something to use less reliable charging networks and pay more doesn’t make a lot of sense. It’d be nice to have for road trips in the off chance that a supercharger isn’t available but between the growing network and other manufacturers now switching to the NACS I think I’ll just wait it out

Same thing I was thinking. The cost of EVGo and EA always seem to be way higher than superchargers. By my home it’s significantly more expensive than the supercharger network.

Big Island, here. The fastest charger on the island is 50kwh, and they barely maintain them (Shell). I do have the adapter though. I would say it's essential here. Tesla should offer it at time of purchase for those areas without superchargers (hint, hint). The Big Island would certainly benefit from having a couple of them even the slow 150's.

A little bit? 59c vs 39c - 50% surcharge (plus $1 session fee) + $250 to buy adapter + your membership fee if you bought one Unless you live somewhere with constant wait times at Tesla chargers, I can't see this being useful for anyone tbh

I got the Tesla CCS adaptor some time ago. I’ve used it a couple times, mainly out of convenience than necessity. Worked flawlessly at the EA stations I’ve used. Summer of ‘22, we took my wife’s VW ID.4 PRO to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The trip went smoothly, though after we left St George UT, we traveled some very remote roads (read: no chargers) until we got to Kanab UT. We plugged into the ChargePoint there at the community center before heading down to an RV campsite near Jacob Lake. We plugged into the RV 240 volt outlet at our site for our several day stay. Same thing when we moved to Zion NP. RV outlets are an undiscussed, but very valuable, resource for EV charging! Point being, if I want to take my ‘21 M3 SR+ on that trip, the adaptor would give me the confidence to do it! Great video, Andy! 👍🏼

Thanks Andy! This gives me something to go by. I live in NV and there is are Tesla superchargers just about everywhere with the closest being 2 miles from me. I often wonder what other chargers charge for use and if I should stick with Tesla superchargers or try some other chargers like EVGo and ChargePoint. 9 out of 10 EVgo chargers in Vegas are closed temporarily. So not in a hurry to buy a CCS1 adapter. The Tesla supercharger by me is currently: 16 stalls @ 250kW Max, I charge up during my lunch break so I can get Early bird prices Early bird 10p - 11a @ .20¢ kWh On-Peak 11a - 6p @ .31¢ kWh Off-Peak 6p - 10p @ .25¢ kWh

I have been using Tesla since 2015 till now and I have NEVER used any other chargers besides Tesla Superchargers. There are enough superchargers out there that you barely need anything else. The only other one I have used is plug-in regular 120/220 volt chargers at digestion, such as hotel ect. Hopefully, EVGo Survive.

Great video! I also bought the adapter from Tesla, thinking the same as you, Andy, that it would be good insurance. I tried it once at the Electrify America in Palm Springs CA and could never get it to work, despite plugging in, unplugging, waiting, trying again, for about 10 minutes. I finally just gave up. I should probably try at an EVgo station to see if my 2022 Model S will charge.

Hi Andy, thanks for the video. Question, do you always need an app or can you also swipe a Credit card on the charger without the need of an app?
@k89238 ай бұрын
72kw is pretty slow really. Once you use the high speed tesla superchargers, the older 72kw chargers are a drag. Charging that could take 12 minutes takes around 30 minutes. The only time I traveled to a place that didn't have Tesla chargers, I used the mobile charger with a 30amp adapter at a camp ground. Worked fine in a pinch.
@donvale7538 ай бұрын
It shouldn't be any harder to use any company's charger than it is to fuel an ice car. Just as you can earn discounts for enrolling in a gas company's loyalty program, you should be able to enroll in a charger company's program and then you should be able to simply plugin and charge WITHOUT requiring any cell phone app or credit card. Also, the requirement to use the tesla app to precondition battery and navigate using phone app is also pathetic and won't work if there is no nearby Tesla charger. The all Tesla experience is so superior.
@kurtziegler87798 ай бұрын
Unless you only travel on interstate or similarly major highways it's not at all rare for there to be no superchargers along your route. Several of my regular routes in the west wouldn't be possible if I had to rely solely on superchargers. I use my adapter often and wouldn't have purchased a Y if it wasn't an option. The apparent lack of this option for the cybertruck would be a deal breaker if I had any interest in it in the first place. Oh and thanks for the video, I had not heard about EVGo's Autocharge+. I've only used EVGo a few times but my success rate has been 100%. Compared to more like 50% of the time having to contact support to get a charge going with Electrify America, by far the worst...

I live in Nebraska. There are plentiful Tesla Superchargers along I-80 but if ever I ventured into very rural Northern Nebraska then my options are far more limited. Most of the CCS "fast" chargers are either 50 or 62.5 KW. Not great, but better than 120 VAC!!!! My 2021 MYLR doesn't have CCS compatibility. I guess I could add it if I wanted. 99% of my driving is local and all is well with that.

In Canada, there are fewer Tesla chargers, particularly the further North you go. It’s necessary here. I can’t make it to my daughter’s college and back without it, in the winter. I can make it in the summer, if I don’t have any surprises. But any driving while there would be impossible.

Adapters (in either direction) will be necessary as EVs proliferate. I've had money sitting in my Tesla account to buy one of these for over a year -to no avail. Tesla has delayed availability time and time again for those who need a retrofit in their car. A year ago they said "by mid-2023." Then they changed it to "by the end of 2023." Now they state "in January 2024." So gawddamn typical of Tesla to put customers off like this. I'm fed up with the company -and its sick CEO.
