I feel you ! I get that “oh you one of those “ then they criticize & judge because I don’t send my children to public schools smh 🤦🏼‍♀️

I am very thankful we live in an area where homeschooling is popular and common.....but I do know those looks and judgements (most often from family). But I shake it off. I know what we are doing works for us and we are happy.

I just found your video today and I could listen to you all day.. Thank you so much! We started homeschooling last year when my son was 5 years old ( kindergarten year). This year, I bought some curriculum because last year was stressful without it. My son doesn't find it fun and happier on days where he's off from school. This video just made me happy because it resonates with me as a mom. I have moments where I feel we just recreated public school at home with a comfy chair. It is a sit at the table and do math, phonics workbook, letter writing practice. Then other subjects in a comfy chair. When he wants to skip all of it, there's a part of me that just wants him to push through it and make him do it. Another part of me feels like it is not working because he sometimes hatees it. Thank you for giving me other ideas!

@@LearningLifeMBwe have not found our grove another year later. I realized I found this video twice and left a comment. We picked up curriculum this year for language arts and it isn't working for my son. He finds it boring and not retaining it. We need to do something different. Thanks you sweetie!

Thank you 😊. Im not an unschooler but i got some great ideas from this video. My kid LOVES math and ABCMouse but hates the Language Arts curriculum 😅. I ditched it and started teaching phonics through games and just reading beginner books to her. So much better for both off us 😂

I love your point of view! Just a thought, Montessori style of learning has a great way to learn parts of speech. It is game like. And there is no workbooks. The website of branches to bloom explains it very well.

What if they don't want to read or write? (almost 7 year old boy) We have read to him pretty much every night of his life since birth. He loves the pictures, but only looks at the words when directed to. We have been using a curriculum since kindergarten, but now he hates these parts of school (adores math and tolerates sign language). We are here to learn a new way, so he can maintain a love of learning.

I am sorry that your comment slipped by me. I am sorry that your child doesn't really want to read and write at the moment. But that doesn't mean he won't always. At almost 7 he still might not be fully interested in it - and that can be reasonably typical at that age, esp amongst boys. I would keep reading to him, directing him to words as you read, but I would also make a fun game of finding certain words when you are out in public. I know that that spurred my girls on to wanting to know more. Even now I have one who will really only read when I am there with her and she can read it out loud. Largely this is because she doesn't want to get a word wrong and wants that reinforcement. But I know soon she will discover the joy of reading (probably when she gets tired of me singing the little song I wrote for her called "You will never be bored with a book!" Ha). I wouldn't be too concerned at the moment, back off from curriculum and just keep reading. One day he will be all in.

How do I do this when I am require to test my 5th grader at the end of the year? NC makes us test reading, spelling , and math.

It is hard to do if your state requires certain testing.... But it's quite interesting to see how much the children know even when it's not specifically taught. It's really interesting to see how much my girls can spell from reading and not having daily spelling lessons.
