Sometimes the coiled cable in a boom pole can get tangled. Here, I explain why that happens and how to fix it. www.ktekpro.com

That's the beauty of what we do. We have pretty much any cable option you want, although for the really long poles we don't do an internal coiled cable because when a 20 foot pole with an internal coiled cable is fully extended , the cable will rattle around and make a lot of noise, no matter how good your technique is.

Very useful video, thanks! You saved my school having to send in about three of our K-tek boom poles. Also great music selection, shout out to DJ Shadow!!!

Dave, does this work with a side xlr connector or do you have a video addressing that configuration that I'm just not finding?

Thanks for the pointers Dave! I'll see if I can make it work.

Instead of untying the cable from the top (before screwing the bottom XLR back in), I just hold the XLR jack perfectly still and (with the lowest/largest knuckle loosened) I spin the bottom section of the pole onto the XLR's threads. This way the cable is not spinning and I don't have to untie the cable at the top. Seems to achieve the same result.

I am with you on that. It is just that I have an boom pole with an internal coiled cable - but I have to admit not a K-TEK one - and I've been having were numerous problems. I am in the process of selecting a new pole and the K-TEKs: KS-199-FT (5 Section) or the KS-200-FT are high on my list. But it is definitely a straight cable solution for me.

Hi Randy, It's possible that there could be a kink further up in the pole that you can't get to or it could be that the actual tightness of the coil might have loosened up, making it so the smallest section won't collapse all the way. How long have you had the pole?

Was this shot by a sound guy? It's overexposed but the sound is great!

I got threw all the steps but I'm dead stuck on trying to knot the top back to how it was. It's REALLY unclear on how you are doing that. Can't see what you're pulling at the end. I'm ending up with it just getting stuck on itself in the hole. Yet when you do it it just all slides through into place. Cant tell what I'm doing wrong and it's frustrating. Bent this wire to much now trying to do it and still don't havde it. I am dead stuck.

Worked like a charm! Now my boompole fully collapses!

thanks a lot, I'm using a Rycote one so some of the steps are a little different but I would not have worked it out with you. :)

Not really. Many people really like internally coiled cabled poles for a variety of reasons. This issue is something that can pop up from time to time, just like an issue with an audio recorder, or your car. It can't be ignored, and can be a simple fix if you know how to do it.

How did you get Zach Galifianakis to record this for you?

The description gives more details. You can only do so much in the title.

Isn't this video a bad advertisement for internal cc'ed boom poles?
