Great how to video man. To be honest I don't bother updating my GoPro anymore. My camera was working fine, I then got a update email. So I went on the site and went through the process and did the update. But ever since then the camera sometimes wouldn't turn on or record or the screen was just black or it would cut out in the middle of recording. I was gutted, lol. Luckily it was still under guarantee so I just got a new replacement from the shop. So I decided if it does what I need it to as it is, that'll ding dang do for me ,lol. Tcrs fella ✊

Man, unfortunately I've heard of these stories with GoPro again and again. I LOVE the video quality of GoPro but I''ve heard of too many horror stories with the cameras. I've been super fortunate with my budget action cams. No major issues to date. And certainly no black screens or freeze ups!

That's a great question. Personally, I'm done with upgrading this camera. The firmware seems to be working just great. As an older camera, I really don't see the need to keep upgrading from this point on.

SoopaBee note the problem I had. My sound either won't record or won't playback after the update. I'd leave the DBPower as is. They we're not able to help me restore it back to factory default

I don't believe that you can upgrade a SJCAM basic to wifi. Wifi is built in as hardware so no software update is going to make this happen. At least as far as I know. You may have to purchase a wifi version of the SJ4000. Good luck!

Nice guide/how-to video. I work in technology. And I can not begin to tell you how many times that I have to explain to customers that the firmware will not work with that hardware version of a given device (router, switch, firewall, etc.)

My camera is some fake. Firmware SJ4000 x2031.v142 and completely ignores all attemps to change the firmware. Cannot upgrade firmware. When put the microsd card with the firmware file and start the camera it starts like everytime. Simply treat the firmware as ordinary microsd card. Formated the card several times - same thing. Also when camera starts up doesnt say "welcone" or "sjcam" or anything like that. It says "Sports camera" with camera logo. And with little letters "Lets go" And starts.

Hello , I have SJCAM 5000x Elite and it works perfectly fine. What I would like to ask you is for another camera - apparently it is a "SJCAM SJ4000 basic", but actually it seems that it is some kind if replica. In Version it says the following : SJ4000.215.V142 My question is : What is this camera ? I just found it (a friend gave it to me)... On the front it says only "HD". NO "Sjcam" and NO "1080P". When I turn it on it says "Action Camera" and "Be Uniqe" and it shows some kind of GoPro-like logo LOL ! 😂 :)

Yes, the SJCAM site has changed and now does not have anything about SJ4000 Basic, even on Forum there are "blank screen" questions that are unanswered. Nice find! Thanks for link it will upgrade mine from N20140902v01 to N20150530v01

I finally got around to doing the firmware update......... seems I have got myself a copy :-( I tried and tried and tried again, even got someone else to try it but it doesn't update the firmware!!! I am devastated!! I was going to buy the SJ6 Legend but I just can't bring myself to buying another camera when I still have 2 that work just fine..... would be nice though!!!

NOPE :-( even tried the update as of 19 days ago.... I think I got ripped...... not really, it has done well as a second cam even if it isn't an original SJ4000. Oh well, thems the breaks :-(

I follow these directions, but my camera just ignores the firmware !! Mine is like yours an unbranded one, but I'm pretty sure it is original as I bought it when they first came out. Also some other websites have ways to check that it is original and mine checks out. (But I guess there is still a chance it is a fake). Anyone else had this problem ?

I figured out the problem ! This is a really strange one, it turns out when I downloaded the firmware linux renamed the bin extension from upper to lowercase. When I edited it back to uppercase, the firmware update worked !! Success !!! So the moral of the story is make sure the firmware name is exactly correct !!

SJCAM never mention that Linux changes the file extension case. I changed the extension back to uppercase & my SJ4000 basic updated without a problem. It does make you nervous that you have just bricked your action camera while it does it's thing.

I tried to upgrade the firmware looking for Time Lapse feature and got the black screen. Eventually found the correct original F.W. at HobbyKing where they still sell a rebadged SJ 4000 very cheap (Turnigy Action Cam). As long as it still outputs video while recording I am cool with that. That was the original update we all did back in the autumn of 2014 right after it was purchased from Fox Offer and some time before SJCAM was even a brand name. I still would like the Time lapse feature for this camera. But hey,.. it is time to shell out for a 4K camera right people?? :-) Best regards and thanks for the great vids

I tried to update to Ver1.7 and the result was a black screen. THere are reports of this on the forum. I swear I don't have enough time in a day to hunt around yet another forum damm it! Could not find the early FW, no matter what I tried. Eventually I went to Hobby King and downloaded some FW for their version of the SJ4000 ...fixed it. Only thing I was interested in was the time lapse feature. Just goes to show you that trying to install new is not always a bright idea. Maybe I will just buy another later model or better yet a cheap assed 4K and fly that around

Maxim, I most certainly will. You bought yours when? Mine was from 2014 I got it from Fox Offer (I know, weird name !? ) they sold me the camera with two extra batteries. The firmware was just changing to allow for video out during record function via the USB cable, or something like that. So I went to check out the Turnigy Action Cam from Hobby King. goo.gl/fTiGF4 It is just a rebadged SJ4000. On the item page there is a tab amongst others called "Files" and there I found the firmware. Basically what you are trying to find is FW96650A.bin. Load it onto the root of an empty micro sd and , well I am sure I don't have to go on. Get back to me if you want me to send it directly to you. PS. Don't for god sake what ever you do go for a tour of the HobbyKIng site. It would be very dangerous to you fun levels and more than likely your pocket book. Best regards :-) PPS if your want indepth info on anything that is RC (Remote Control) related check out RCGroups.com and you will find and incredible indepth discussion and resource.SJ4000 is definitely one that would have its own thread there. I already have too many that I subscribe to and have no time for any others :-o.

+drz-400-e Unfortunately, I can't help you out if it is truly a fake SJ4000. The issue is that the early batch of SJ4000s weren't branded with the SJCAM logo and so it is difficult to tell if an unbranded camera is a true SJ4000 or not just by looking at the camera. If the update didn't work, then there is a good chance that the camera is not authentic. Sorry I can't help out. Good luck!

Risky! With a low battery, I would not attempt a firmware update!... Nice! I am always too scared to update firmware on devices that already do everything I want them to do. Bricked a motherboard back in the 90's updating cmos, and the power went out in the middle. Always scares me. Way to live on the edge! lol.

i just did mine on my old sjcam sj4000 basic 1.5" screen/ non wifi with this current 11/26/2017 link: support.sjcam.com/support/discussions/topics/9000002052 make sure is FW96650A.bin (2.57 MB) and NOT the FW96650A.bin (2.60 MB) or you will get the black screen with the 2.60MB firmware

They did not. This is for Novatek NT96650 SoC while the wifi SJ4000 uses a completely different chip NT96655. Completely different firmware and chipsets.
