I wouldn't say 'unnecessarily'. The Gameboy was created for children and adults alike, and kids are hard on toys. Heck, even a lot of adults are! The reason the Gameboy has thrived all these years is partly because it was built extremely well! I wish someone put that kind of effort into a smartphone! :)

I remember having one of those lights for my original Gameboy so you could play in the dark. It was a little rice bulb with a mirror pointed at the screen. The light itself took 4 AA batteries. I hardly used it, I eventually got one of those clip on reading lamps that plugged into the wall outlet.
