An air coil with OCC wire with a larger cross section I think would be better than thin silver wire and a metal core. OCC single crystal pure copper is an excellent and cheaper substitute for silver alloys. Cast copper wire has significantly better performance than drawn copper wire. The problem is, it's not that easy to calculate, an iron core to an air core, there's not much info online .

@@tweakerman If you know the value of the steel core coil, the optimum air core coil can easily be calculated. An app like Coli Calculator works great. When you have a working coil it can easily be measured with an L-C meter. Don't judge my English because that's what google translator can do. Greetings

@@silverchesnov5247 I've measured it on my lcr meter, so I know the value, but calculating it from iron core to air core is not so easy, I'll take a look at that app👍

​@@silverchesnov5247I also spoke to Jantzen this morning over email, they advised me to go for an iron core on the woofer, which is rather interesting, they said their ones are far better than what I'm already using .

@@tweakerman If you buy from Jantzen you will not go wrong at all. Winding a coil by hand is not easy, and buying a coiler is not justified if you do not plan to make many units. If the coil is not precisely wound, the value becomes less than the requested. The Coil Calculator program works very well and I have hand wound quite a few coils because I had enameled wire for free.

Did you test the inductance and resistance to see if it matches the original?

Definitely would be interesting to see if it's the same and especially if there are any shorts. Would the home lacquer approach be 100%?

Based on my experience with LS3/5as it seems that you'd be better off replacing them with air cored inductors.

The reason for using the iron core is to do with space, the speaker cabinet is very small & after rewiring with the new wire, they measure the same, thanks for commenting & watching 👍

It amaze me every time how much effort and money people putting in the pursuit to improve their audio systems without any result. Save up the money instead of burning it up for useless cables, wires and other stupid gadgets and buy yourself a real better set of loudspeakers. That is effective.

Most loudspeakers put crap parts in the crossovers, cheap inductors, resistors and capacitors, no matter how much you pay, that's why we upgrade them, thanks for commenting & watching 👍
