It is recommended you lightly grease the entire back side of the pads to prevent brake noise.
@pm8372
@pm8372 3 жыл бұрын
Always wise to grease the backing where the piston comes in contact. In this case, the bracket on the pad prevents that.
@quix99
@quix99 2 жыл бұрын
@@pm8372 really? Why doesnt the factory do that then? Never grease brake pads, slides, anything. No OEM manufacturer reccomends it due to collection of debris buildup
@AnotherYoubue
@AnotherYoubue 2 жыл бұрын
@@quix99 Cost, While debris build up is a con, A set of quality brake pads with rubber shims should negate the use of grease. The general reason why manufacturers don’t do something is because of cost. ¢0.10 of grease per car multiplied by hundreds of thousand for something that isn’t necessary is not cost effective.

It's true that bmw advices not to lubricate the brake guides, nevertheless I always lube them with silicon based lube or ATE plastilube. The important is not to use convencional or copper paste to not damage the rubber seals. That's what some other cars manufacturers advice, so I see no harm. One advice, when pressing the brake piston, it should be done with the reservoir open, to release the excess pressure. Nice video though.

I've seen different specs for the rear torque than the front torque for the caliper bolts. I'll be doing my rear brakes and rotors this weekend on a 2016 320i xdrive. 81 ft lb for the front, but only 22 ft lb for the rear. Can you confirm?

Bryan, just found your video. I'm looking to replace the brake pads on my 2019 F36 440i Gran Coupe M Sport. Can I and is it advisable to upgrade the rear brakes to the brembro style 2 piston calipers to get the colored calipers on all fours? Thanks and great video.

Hey Bryan, Thank you so much for these videos! Just one question for you, please. I just purchased my 2014 F30 and the previous owner had the rear pads changed. They also did not replace the sensor and the dash still showed that the pads were going to wear out in xxxx miles. I took the car to BMW of Sterling (VA) and they said that this sensor needed to be replaced when they did the pads. Is this just the dealer trying to make some extra money (I think with install they wanted to charge ~$150 to replace/install) or is it worth it to replace it while its apart? Let me know what you think and hope you and yours have a great holiday.
@James-yb6kj
@James-yb6kj 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, if the sensor is intact then it does not need replacing. What you need to do is update your car's brake service interval (in this video its says 28000 miles left) then it will count thee miles down on your new pads.

I was told by a BMW mechanic that they are supposed to be changed out every time regardless and he was the one paying for work on my car because he sold me it so he had no reason to lie at all, it just made him pay more for the repair.

Bryan, do you ever find that the parking brake mechanism needs servicing? I suppose there may not be much to do if the brake has only been properly used with the car stopped, but this is the best time ever for maintenance since the rotor is already off. Thanks.

this might be an uneducated question, but hypothetically if i was on a budget and could only upgrade the brakes one step at a time what order should the upgrades be: callipers, Pads or Rotors? thank :)
@marshallgoldberg8376
@marshallgoldberg8376 4 жыл бұрын
robbyrazzer It depends on what you mean by “Upgrade.” If you want bigger calipers, they come with new pads and the old ones won’t work. You may need to upgrade the rotors with the bigger calipers. But if you mean same-size pads and rotors, the only caliper upgrade you can do is to powder coat them. If you want to upgrade both the pads and rotors, I’d just do them together, and if I really had to do pads and rotors separately, I’d do rotors first, because old rotors on new pads will put grooves in the pads. Better to upgrade front rotors/pads together then upgrade rear rotors/pads together.
