Good video clear explanation of the transfer case functions. At the 12 minute mark when talking about overdrive, that is actually lockup on the torque converter. So in high range, if you set it do "D" it will shift 1-2-3-4 then at about 54mph it will Lock-up. So you have 4 ratios in the box, but thanks to the lockup function it works kind of like a 5 speed or indeed an overdrive as you put it. If you set it to "3" it will shift 1,2,3, then at 45mph it will lock-up. It will only lock up in "D" or "3" In low range, the torque converter will lock in all four ratios in order to provide engine braking in off road situations. When you apply throttle generously it will unlock, when the car drops to 1mph it will unlock to prevent stalling. As regards the diff lock, CDL can be used in high or low, but its advisable to ease off the throttle before engaging or disengaging the diff lock. In a manual transmission, use the clutch.
@ronaldrrootiii6040 Жыл бұрын
Wow that's interesting I never knew that. I wondered why it felt like kind of a shift sometimes even though I knew I was in 4th. Thought maybe it was just getting old or it was in my head but I've literally noticed that
@checa160 Жыл бұрын
Good explanation!! Mine is manual gearbox. No need to use the cluch to lock-unlock the transfer case. Not even releasing the throttle. It locks-unlocks smoothly anyway, tho it’s probably adviseable to release a bit of gas in order to have less charges on the mechanical parts when locking-unlocking. Cheers

The early years of the Disco 2 didn’t come with the diff lock feature, but the later years did. I know my ‘04 SE7 had it for sure and I believe the ‘03 also had it.

@seashackf1 yeah the 04 had it but from 99 the actuator was there so you could add a linkage to make it like the 04

@@OffRoadDiscovery yeah I don’t know why they removed the shifter and linkage as standard in the first place, but glad they put it back for the final years. I went from a ‘96 Disco 1 to a ‘04 2 so I always had factory installed. Those things are so capable off road.

I used to have a 99 disco2, it still had a locking diff, i had planned on using a universal choke cable kit to engage the lock, theres just a wire you have to snip so the traction control system doesn’t turn off, alternatley you can install a disco 1 hi/lo lever assembly and locking cable and get the same thing. I hesrd the last year of the disco 2 they gave it the 4.6 and locking center diff again.

I have an automatic and I recently heard that in low range Hill descent will work even if the transmission is in neutral. Seems kind of strange I haven't tried it yet. Usually I do first gear or if I want to feel he'll descent work more and not mostly first gear I will put it in manual mode second gear and you feel Hill descent grabbing much stronger
@charlieyoule8007 Жыл бұрын
Please see owners manual - "Stop the vehicle at least a vehicle length before the start of the slope and engage first gear (‘1’, for automatic transmission) LOW range and hill descent control. • Unless it is necessary to stop the vehicle in order to negotiate obstructions, DO NOT touch the brake or clutch pedals during the descent - the engine and HDC will limit the speed, keeping the vehicle under perfect control provided the front wheels are rotating. If the vehicle begins to slide, the limits of adhesion have been reached, and it may be impossible to maintain the minimum speed relative to the gear selected. In this case, HDC may automatically accelerate the vehicle sufficient to maintain directional stability. DO NOT use the accelerator or the brakes or attempt to change gear. HDC will automatically slow the vehicle down again as soon as possible."

@@charlieyoule8007 I already know everything you just wrote I have the owner's manual LOL I was just telling you what I experienced in neutral for fun. OK glad you know, question begged for a sensible answer, as transmission damage can occur. Basically not a good idea to go puting into neutral, you are not using engine braking, and less control.....if you need power you are not engaged, JM2PW....

@@charlieyoule8007 yeah I just tried neutral for fun to see and it worked perfectly and did excellent braking even for being on 285 75 16s. @big5astra3 жыл бұрын
The disco 2 is full time 4wd anyway, so will do what you describe above.

It will not if you don't have CDL locked. But if you do have the CDL locked high or low on the road then yes it will do that.

I just got a 96 landrover discovery. Is it ok to drive with the diff unlocked on low on regular roads? Will it damage anything?
@mikeb533 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't use low range on regular road for long periods of time even with the diff unlocked. It applies a hell of a lot of torque through the transmission to the wheels which are sitting on a high friction surface... aka, regular road. At least... that's my rudimentary understanding. You can use low range with diff unlocked on road however for low speed manoeuvring, parking in a tight spot etc... I would advise you shift into low and into diff lock occasionally, stop them seizing up. Unless you're planning to head off the road.
@OffRoadDiscovery3 жыл бұрын
Would be tough to go fast enough on regular roads as well I would think.

I put mine in low but it won't go left to lock, what's the deal? Mine is 2004
@ronaldrrootiii60402 жыл бұрын
2004 should have the CDL so it should be able to go to the left. It goes up down and then left up or down so it's basically four positions you drive on the street in the bottom right position that's high range not CDL locked. Then you go straight up for low range not locked then you can go to the left and down for high range locked and then straight up from there low range locked so it's like an H pattern.
@Aleksandr104502 жыл бұрын
So on H it's normal driving
@OffRoadDiscovery2 жыл бұрын
Yes. If you need you can lock in H and drive normal as long as you are on slippery terrain.
