I did this to mine earlier. I just ended up welding a washer to a 10mm spanner, tightening the whole thing down with a nut and then attaching a piece of metal to the outside of the transfer case (using two pre-existing holes in the side) where I attached the wire so that it will remain taught when actuating the spanner-cum-lever. The wire and handle I just pushed through a grommet in the firewall into the cabin over the transmission. Seems to work ok.

I agree with everyone else. I always enjoy your videos. It's a good idea with the "Kit" for engaging or disengaging. But I'm ready to see some of the other cars you showed us that are supposed to be worked on too. Or if you have other cars we haven't see that would be fine as well. Hi Steve, another great video about D2's. As you said between '98 & 01 the transfer box was still fitted with but not always with the linkage, so it is possible to use a Disco 1 linkage and modify the support panel in the centre console.Just for your info a D2 with TC and CDL operating is a very potent tool. From memory there is a small electrical modification to made so you still have TC when the CDL is operating.

I have a 1999 D2 an alls i need to do to be able to run TC with CDL is active the CDL why the truck is running, this should keep your TC activated while using CDL, but if you active CDL with the truck off then start it the TC is deactivated, thats how my D2 works not sure on others.

I retired from the US Air Force and now living in England with my NAS LHD 2001 Disco 2 V8 with SAI, +2" TF shocks & springs, and an SRD500070 SLABS unit. I've owned in the past a RHD '98 Disco 1 V8 and RHD 2001 Disco 2 TD5 but this is my first American spec LHD Disco 2 that I bought in Atlanta. I've got the CDL nipple but of course it has no lever or linkage. I just crawl under and use a 10mm spanner (wrench) to engage the CDL. The CDL light illuminates on the gauge cluster so that's a bonus too. BTW... Nanocom FTW!!! lol Cheers mate!

Keep an eye out for your undercarriage. So many Pristine looking discos get junked in england because the chassis rusts out. I recommend getting your chassis galvanized so it'll last longer...

there are a few kits to include one that uses a remote actuator that i believe is electric driven. No matter how you get there however having the center locked if your ABS is not functioning is a BIG plus.

Now that's something I didn't know, always assumed that all Disco II could engage diff locck via the console lever, for the model years where a central diff lock was fitted.

They discontinued the CDL linkage on the ones with Electronic traction control, only brought it back in the last d2 in 2004, the ones from 99 to mid 2001 used the leftover transfer cases from the d1 that had the locker, mid 2001 to 2003 got a t case without lock.

Also if you want to make a 3 amigos video that would be awesome. I've tried everything now no power to the abs code. The 01 won't start now replaced the crankshaft position sensor but still nothing any help would be much appreciated. Keep on keeping on!

Ok Steve what is a center diff lock? I know what front and rear diff locks are I have them on my wrangler. Is it just another way to say transfer case, or is that in addition to the transfer case.

Your transfer case is always locked, it will always put 50% power to front axle and 50% to rear axle. On what seems everything that is not American, they have an open transfer case that is similar to having another open differential. You can split any amount of power to front or rear. On the Discovery if you were to have none of your lockers engaged you can apply 100% of power to just one tire, which also probably means you are stuck. Your Jeep at maximum can only apply 50% to one rear tire and 50% to one front tire at the same time, also probably meaning you went further before being stuck. My Pinzgauer has hydraulic lockers for the front, rear and center differentials, check it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bITbgGBvotR2ftk To combat the downsides of a fully locked transfer case is why you see lots of American off road trucks with free-wheeling front hubs. With the hubs disengaged they can then send 100% of the power to the rear wheels instead of only 50%. Of course many trucks have a 2WD setting that will allow this also but they sometimes wont let you have low range 2WD or if you have put a permanent locker in your front axle you choose when you want 2WD, 3WD or 4WD by locking or unlocking your front hubs.

wow now that is awesome very cleaver just wonder if its possible to do on a D2 TD5 2002 which has the connection with no thread just a square protrusion which takes a 10mm spanner to rotate for engagement and disengagement. Just a question I read that one should not have TC and CD control both on at the same time - any comments on that as well?

You need to have both on otherwise you are only two wheel drive when the going gets tough. You need to the TC to stop the free wheel on the axle from spinning because you do not have front or rear diff locks. It was my understanding that the 2004 Disco II leaves the TC on when CD is engaged.

So coming from the world of jeep np231s and dana 300s, you put the jeep in 4wd, 50% of the power goes to the front and rear respectively. How does the d2 transfer case work without the cdl? It's not making sense to me for some reason

It has it's own differential in it for better maneuverability than the style used in most American trucks. One very nice thing about the center difference lock is that if one of your drive shafts need work, you can have 2WD. Remove the shaft and engage the center diff lock. Note: if the rear shaft is removed, the front tires will love to "lay rubber" frequently. Make you accelerations carefully. Note: the centering bearing on the rear shaft is quite a challenge if it has not been changed out in 20 years. Finally, change your cardan joint bearing on schedule so that it does not fall apart in your hands as you begin to press out the u-joints. Oh, the joys of a 2nd-hand vehicle.

@@ThisWeekWithCars I just heard today that not only is the cardan joint bearing difficult to find, but a modified drive shaft can me made which will mount appropriately to the D2 but the shaft will receive larger U-joints and cardan joint bearing which contains parts that can be find easily in the United States. I will post the name of the maker or size of the replacement. shaft.

The late 02 and 03 Discos do not have diff lock built into their transmissions. In 2004 they had them again and had a lever to use them from the factory.

Hi there. I just had internals and linkage put in on a 2004 plate D2 The dash warning light doesn’t work and instead the transmission temp light comes on intermittently. Did you have any issue getting the warning light to work ? Thanks 🙏

I have seen the warning light not work on the D2s, and it seemed that even though the lever was engaged it was not actually going into CDL. I have driven one D2 for 15 miles or more before the CDL actually engaged and the light came on. If you try this only do it on a wet surface or damage could happen if you turn on dry pavement with the CDL engaged.

Just find a scrap 300TDi and take the parts from that. Both use the R380 gearbox and LT230 transfer box. As for the cable, look for an older car that has a manual choke and use that.If your car doesn't have the bolt sticking up, you can either bolt on an earlier transfer box complete, or just the part that has the lever. Land Rover may have had a 'senior moment' when they deleted the locking diff, at least it's all still 'Meccano' and can all be fixed with some spanners and used parts.

My discovery does not have the internals for the CDL. It’s 2004. You can buy a kit that includes the missing transfer box internals and the correct shifter and linkages for £450 in UK from Ashcroft transmissions. I have been quoted about the same amount to have it fitted by a Land Rover specialist (about a 6h job). So it’ll be about £1000 (about $1300 US) to have it retro fitted

Okay I just bought a 2003 Disc II TD5. The diff lock is not available to access inside. A 4x4 mechanic showed me that diff lock was automatic in 4LOW while moving in Third gear. Is this the case? I know this is not a forum, but just asking. Thanks

No they did not have electric control of the diff lock on the I and II it might be the case in the newer series but not yours.

Too many warranty claims from owners destroying the transfer box through improper use, combined with not needing it with TC. If you only have traction at one wheel there's no point sending 50% drive to the other end of the vehicle.
