How To Use A Beacon! ▫ Minecraft Survival Guide S3 ▫ Tutorial Let's Play [Ep.63]

The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues in Minecraft 1.20.2!
In this tutorial, we focus on the Beacon, a block which can give the player six different powerful status effects, including Haste!
First, we look at the individual beacon tiers and the effects that unlock with each one. We explore how the beacon's effective range grows with each additional tier, and discuss how the various status effects can be obtained in other ways... except for the unique Haste effect, which increases the player's mining speed!
With Haste and an Efficiency V pickaxe, we can instantly break blocks which took a small but significant time to break before. The Haste II effect from a tier 4 beacon allows us to insta-mine the natural stone that makes up most of the overworld, making it easy to gather stone and cobblestone in vast quantities.
After that we take the beacon to a Badlands biome to insta-mine terracotta with Haste I, we look at how to activate a beacon within the Nether cavern to insta-mine Basalt and Blackstone, and we discuss how the improvement to mining speed can help with resources which can't be mined instantly, like Obsidian in the End dimension.
Along the way we also look at how stained glass can change the colour of a beacon beam, which materials can be used to activate the beacon and form the beacon base, and why gold is possibly the most player-friendly material to form the pyramid of a beacon!

It does make sense that the beacon colors work base off pigments. You are, after all, using pigments as color filters on your glass. So it's all subtractive. Also, of note for those of you who have multiple nether stars: You don't need to make a unique pyramid for each beacon, you can use your existing beacon pyramid to save on blocks by making it thicker.

Yeah, it makes sense - just wanted to get out ahead of the folks who seem to confuse the primary colours of light and pigments, probably because the gaming community has a fascination with RGB lighting

Technically that does not in fact make sense, but it doesn't need to. This is a game that has zombies and dragons in it, in which gravity has no impact on stone, white dye is a thing, and trees go from sapling to full grown instantly. It's a _game_ not a physics engine. It's supposed to be fun, and excessive realism is boring.

Conduit Power also works if you are in range, and it is raining outside. But a bucket of water will do if you are underground, or in an environment where it doesn't rain, such as a desert or badlands biome.

Fun fact: With a tier 4 beacon you can pick two primary effects. To do so, simply pick the first effect as primary and secondary power, then pick the second effect as new primary power *without* selecting anything in the secondary slot again. When you activate the beacon, you get both selected primary powers as level 1 effects. Also, beacons are not the only source of haste 1. Conduit power does actually also include Haste 1 in addition to night vision and water breathing. In other words, if you don't have a beacon yet, you can still instant-mine terracotta if you build a conduit nearby and stand in water. Another good thing to know: A beacon's regeneration effect is weaker than that from a potion. However, it still is strong enough to perfectly balance the life loss from starvation. If you play on hard difficulty, where starving is actually deadly, a regeneration beacon is a great addition to a mob farm where you swing at mobs using some kind of auto-clicker for extended periods of time, since you don't need to stop to eat anything.

before i even knew what beacons were and how they worked (and how much of a pain they are to acquire!!) i saw someone make a beautiful beacon light rainbow, with incredible gradients between each shades by layering the glass blocks! it was so stunning, there was just a like 100block long rainbow in his world

For Bedrock players, we also get the Haste effect when chopping wood, making tree farming just a little less tedious. I’m not sure if Java players have gotten this yet. And, for Bedrock players, with a little bit of careful placement, we can insta mine deepslate (netherite pick, with efficiency 5, haste 2, and the deepslate block needs to be at the very end of your reach with the pick). It’s tricky and will probably get patched out some day, but for the moment, it’s a possibility. One that may or may not be available to Java players. Awesome video! Thank you for sharing!

All block mining benefits from the Haste effect, it's just that Java has this "magical" threshold that it removes a delay after each broken block when the breaking time drops below 1 game tick. Haste beacons won't drop the breaking time for logs, cobble stone, deepslate or nether bricks below that threshold, so those can't be instant-mined.

When breaking the beacon down, I set it to Haste 2, and then tear it down from the bottom up to speed along the removal process. That keeps the effect running even as you're taking out the beacon itself.

@@TheRealWormbo Gold blocks are a good option. But the place where you can actually farm a lot of gold is the Nether. I would rather trade with villagers.

@@TerroMark396 That's fair, and the gold blocks are really meant for temporary beacons that will be torn down eventually. But technically, if you have a beacon anyway, you could beacon-mine for the stuff in badlands at Y>32. On average there's a gold vein every 4.5 layers per chunk, and with full air exposure. Granted, you'd need about 10.5 stacks of ore and Fortune 3 to get enough material, but that seems achievable with a beacon mine.

Thanks for this. I usually have a problem with Haste II or instamining. If I want to remove the layer my feet and head are at, I can do the head layer fine, by just holding the pickk horizontal. But if I try to mine the layer my feet are at (not the layer I'm standing on, one above that), invariably the pick mines both the foot layer and the one below.

When picking up a beacon with haste I start on the bottom layers first. Makes pick up faster. However, maybe that is only Bedrock. Thanks Pix! I didn’t know about using a Beacon in the nether or End = )

Can you explain how two beacons can share a base and what the best strategy is for combining their bases?

It's simple really...a beacon only looks directly under it for base blocks, and as Pixlriffs pointed out, it doesn't care if those blocks are covered by anything...including more base blocks. You could build, say, a cube of iron blocks and as long as you place the beacon in 1 or more blocks from the outer edge, it'll activate. Of course, higher tier effects will require placing it further from the outer edge, as well as making sure the cube has enough depth and width that the appropriate-sized pyramid is under the beacon. If you overlap your pyramids, you can save on materials on the subsequent beacons, as, again, it will only check for the pyramid under it, and not care if part of that pyramid is also being used by another beacon as *it's* pyramid.

You can also make a beacon pyramid that can house up to 6 beacons and activate all of the buffs at once. Bottom layer of the pyramid has to be 10x11

I always feel the beacons need a big TLC update. To me, all they do is make an infinitely long sandbox game, take slightly less infinite time to complete... and other than for live streaming, I don't see any _real_ purpose in that. I know it adds up, but, I've been playing this game for a decade or more, and 100% of that time has been spent _just playing a game_ , objectively :) In that if it takes me 3 hours longer to build a thing, when there's no time constraint in the first place, then it seems like a lot of effort in killing a wither, building/moving a beacon, for that. Maybe other folks just have busier lives than I do :) but I feel there should be some "special" power a beacon gives.... say maybe: full creative flight in its normal radius, if you energise it with a block of netherite, or another nether star, or something ... so that the drive would be for base-builders to be able to build creatively (Elytra are great for travel, but most of my deaths tend to be during base building, due to confined spaces or small landing areas). I dunno, just throwing it to the wind, but I'm just meaning that there should be a real benefit to a beacon for building QOL, not just for mining speed or regeneration ( I mean, I _like_ regen near my base, but it's not like I _need_ it, if I'm well fed ). ... to this end, I never usually bother with them, and because of that, I don't bother with withers, and because of that I don't bother with wither skeletons or roses... and I feel that lack of (my personal) impetus for such a seemingly vital slice of the game is all down to the beacon just being a bit dull, ironically :) I _want_ to have a reason to farm wither skeletons and battle withers, that isn't "Oh! Well I guess I can have another beacon now, then. Great!" :)

NO. :) as you can't point the beams sideways , tho there would be a feature I'd get behind... imagine being able to put the beacon sideways, with a wall of diamond as its base, and a soul fire in the beam path or something... and then the beacon beam mines in a 9x9 wide tunnel for "some balanced distance" and spits out the items behind itself... Something like the old Thaumcraft mining laser, but way more vanilla. I dunno. :) I just think: Oi! Beacons! Shape yourselves up a bit! Yous look fabulous but yous're all sparkly lights and not much else :)

I think it would be cool if we could add "plating" to iron tools that would give us the benefit of the gold or diamond tools and be cheaper. We could even put gold plating on diamond tools to make them faster. Maybe just nerf the solid gold tools altogether and make it plating for others. We already use netherite plating over diamond gear, gold could be used the same way.

Any idea's how to make the beacon beams blend into your base without it being an eyesore? Love perma jump boost/haste ext. but to have all these beams over your base isn't that nice to look at.

Unfortunately there isn't a way to hide a beacon's beam in Survival - other than constructing something around it. It's something I hope will be an option in future, but currently not possible.

I literally just watched your old survival guide beacon video yesterday! I noticed something. In the old video when you made the beacon in the nether, a bunch of zombie piglins came up and stood on top of the beacon. In this video when you made the beacon in the end a couple endermen went straight for it and stood on top of it. Are mobs attracted to the beacon? I don’t see anything on Google about it.

Mobs in general have a bias to pathfind to higher blocks. If you pay attention you'll find farm animals or even iron golems tend to wander to the top of nearby mountains of they can. Particularly funny with the golems, as they wander out of detection range of their villagers who summon a replacement soon enough. over time you'll have a rather impressive congregations of mountain golems. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that behavior is coded in to prevent mobs from getting lost in caves or something like that.

Season 1 ended because of major world updates. Season 2 ended because the randomly selected world was actually quite annoying in some aspects, such as spawn being boring (i.e. having no landmarks) and important biomes such as deserts being extremely far away. Expect season 3 to go on for much longer than season 2, and across major version updates.

One tip for digging down which you maybe haven't mentioned yet: You can position yourself so that you mostly stand on one block and mine it while you still stand on the block that is technically in front of you. With this method you don't need to move your mouse, still stand on two blocks but you only have one block of insurance under you.

You could possibly do it with the beacon base and a pretty sophisticated flying machine, but I'm pretty sure the beacon itself isn't piston pushable. It could still take the chore out of breaking all the blocks, but the benefit would be negligible when A) you need to build a flying machine and B) it's ideal for the beacon to be built at or below ground level for the type of resources you'd want to mine out. Cool idea though
