I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well kzbin.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

100% correct! I was raised on baitcasters and UNFORTUNATELY my dad wasn’t taught correctly so we never learned the correct way to set up the spool tensioner/brake and ever since I was a kid I had issues with birds nests. Legit about a week ago I got sick and tired of it so I bought two Abu Garcia pro rockets and an inshore baitcaster and watched a video similar to this and it’s LIFE CHANGING! Haven’t had a single birdsbest since AND I can cast a mile! So thanks for putting a video like this out to educate all of us who weren’t taught correctly.

*Used this today for first time **enjoyable.fishing** recommend caught four bass with it, it seems to be a solid reel so far. Very smooth and cast like a dream. I think its a good value.*

My first big bait caster I bought or I should say the first bait caster I had ever bought was an Abu Garcia 6500c3 catfish special witch was bought at the beginning of this year and it only took me 3 cast to get everything perfect

My first... At around year 1992, I make a mistake buying a penn beachcaster . I thought that was a baitcaster :). A few month later, i bought abu 6500c3 2 speed.. So i can learn how to cast

I'm stupid. I bought a big casting reel 4 years ago when I took up Saltwater fishing. I wasn't getting any bites so I started looking into Bass fishing. I mastered the baitcaster for Bass but it never hit me that the big baitcaster is just like the Bass baitcaster. To be fair I didn't understand the clicker function, I tried casting big swimbaits and couldn't cast more than 6 feet, The tension knob must be tighten all the way.
@scarz19514 жыл бұрын
Yeah the spool tension control is great for helping to prevent backlashes and the drag is great for preventing the fish from breaking your line as well as in helping to wear the fish out.

These reels are not designed for casting, they are designed for trolling.

It is precisely this video that saved my ass. I'm in florida and I have this type of fish in the rivers that breaks my rods, a gar. I got obsessed and decided to buy a reel with more torque for the stronger rod I bought.

That is not a BIG reel . This is a BIG reel Penn SQL50VSW Squall Lever Drag 2 Speed Conventional Reel . Using the drag back off to cast the same way but in drive . The lever makes it EZ but I have cast my 6/0 - 9/0 PENN SENATOR the same way. Try it back the drag off till your bait falls slow and cast the same way. A little understanding and practice can make bait casters effective and fun! Just like he/you say!

im new to baitcasters.. just got a lews laser xl and im actually not having any trouble with birdsnest...and i can actually cast the thing forever. I'm having trouble with how to set the pole up once the bait is in the water with drag/spool tension/baitclicker. Do you set it back to free spool once your rod is in the pole holder and engage the bait clicker? Do you loosen the drag up like with spinning gear? I'm so lost with this thing.

Try doing that with an Avet or Accurate lever reel...

Thanks i already knew how to use it but Not completely It Helps A Lot
Lets get it straight guys & gals . I fish all my life and I can tell you these modern conventional reels are design for casting with ease and its all in the thumb so you don't get backlash with a little practice .... I own the old vintage Penn jigmaster 500 and the long beach 66 and I can tell you that I have absolutely NO problem casting those either but it require a little heavier weight . I prefer 3-4 ounces weight works awesome for me . I can tell you I would NOT trade the old vintage Penn in for anything . That was when quality was quality made in the good old USA ! Thats why its still around a 100 years now ! China can keep there junk plastic ! I like the feel of power when I pulled in that shark or tuna in !

Agree....the thumb is KEY. Have also been around baitcaster reels for over 40 years.....the significance and importance of thumb pressure....is absolutely essential. Do not just rely on the tension knob......this mechanism does not allow for head / tail winds, wind resistance of lure...especially big poppers etc etc. And applying the right amount of thumb pressure....comes with practice.

If u swap where ur hook and weight are. U can set the hook a lot easier and ur bait won’t sit all the way on the bottom. It will sit just above the bottom so less snags

How do you prevent a birds nest from happening before the end of your line hits the water? A few times when i tried to throw it, i got a birds nest when the lure was still in the air.
@Shurmash2 жыл бұрын
Lightly feather the spool with the tip of your thumb.

@FVCatfishcom8 жыл бұрын

catfish tend to hunt by smell they can't see that good so I don't think the line matters
@Robert-hr6sh5 жыл бұрын
Catfish are line shy, over 50 years I've used just about everything on the market as far as line in concerned, so far past and present no problem. But Its the bright colors that a person can see when night fishing. However catfish don't care.

what is with u guys using trolling reels as baitcasters??? c'mon
@FVCatfishcom7 жыл бұрын
BMK they work!
@SunnahSurvivalPMC7 жыл бұрын
BMK.....What is it with you guys thinking every conventional levelwind reel is a "trolling reel"? C'mon. I have baitcast reels and levelwind reels and I use both of them for catfishing and snook fishing. Both of them do the same thing. One of them looks and operates exactly like the one in this video and guess what, its not a "trolling reel". There are plenty of levelwind reels that are designed and marketed for casting rather than trolling. Not every reel with a side flip knob/release/engage is a "trolling reel". That's ignorance. Do you know the mechanical differences between a baitcast reel and a levelwind reel? If so, please respond.
@facepalmdaily44047 жыл бұрын
I use old school Penn reels for surf fishing for shark. They are technically "trolling" reels, but who gives a flip? I hook up sharks constantly and the reels have the power to bring them in. So it's a win. If it works, then it works.

*The greatest bass fishermen ever Pat Cullen used this type of reel to land over 1,100 bass weighing over 10+lbs; there low gear ratio helped to keep his favorite lure which is a buzzbait in the strike zone longer.*

Is that a trolling reel? Is there no magnetic break for controlling the spinning rate? I want to try a trolling reel for casting distance but don't know if it will work without bird caging.
