Miriam and Chris. This is THE BEST explanation of the Natures Head composting toilet we've ever seen. We signed off a a new Crusader XCE build with a cassette toilet a few hours before we saw this. We have just asked for a variation and a composting toilet following your vid. I hope they agree to the change. Thank you!!

@@AussieDestinationsUnknown Yes they did! Some other questions if I may? Chris puts his paper in sometimes. How does it break down? Any suggestions on type/brand of paper? Also, "skid marks" - presumably the product you showed helps to make them easy to remove. Do you use a carefully directed spray to remove?

We have done our first trip living off grid for over two weeks using the toilet every day. We emptied when we got home just to see how it had worked for us. All can say is - brilliant! Hey guys. Great video. About a year ago when I was researching this topic I struggled to find decent videos on the topic, especially Aussie, from anyone that had significant experience and hadn't just bought it recently! I now have an air-head in my new van, primarily because has a slightly smaller footprint than the natures head and worked best for our situation. I wanted to mention that everything I've read/seen says there's no need to hose out or scrub the poop section each time, as whatever is left behind after tipping the contents into the bag, is the 'starter' for the next batch, with lots of microbes to get the composting process kick started even faster. For that reason, we have a little crate that we have for the crumbling and wetting process, so we aren't putting our hands in the poo section. However, we haven't yet had to empty ours, as we are weekenders at this stage (have obviously emptied the pee bottle!). Time will tell!!

We have the Air Head toilet on our boat. I very rarely clean the #2 container for the following reason: Composting process needs bacteria and it take times to create bacteria, since there is bacteria already in the #2 container after you empty it, I leave it there! I do rinse the #1 container and after usint the toilette we have a spay bottle with 10% venegar/water solution and give the bowl a little spray. Great video thanks.

I have watched another video on this style of composting toilet that you have. And when I saw that you had the same one, I wanted to see what you had to say about it. You gave me so much more information thank you that was great and you covered all aspects of it. That was awesome. I would like to pass on a little information that in your pee pot that you can put boron in there. A tablespoon is all you need. It is a wetting agent, but it also breaks down things in water and it helps. It’s a softener and will help with the harsh odor that you can get does not hurt to put the soap in with it or the vinegar. I do know in a regular holding tank the black water tank is you put one cup of Dawn dish soap, one cup of boron one cup of Pine-Sol and this will cause the solids to break down and when you do your dumping and flush it, cleans everything out. And in your P box, you can probably put half the amount of soap that you put in if you put in 1 tablespoon of boron, and yes, it’s a powder, but it does dissolve and break down and it does wonders and it helps for the clean up afterwards. Appreciate you guys. Thank you and safe traveling. God be with you guys.

I think the washing out and brushing is overkill. You want to retain a good source of beneficial bacteria to speed up the composting process. The first time someone takes a dump in it, it becomes "dirty" again, so it doesn't make a lot of sense.
@cynthiakavanagh6972 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. We just replace the moist peat, no scrubbing or water to clean. And we buy our 9L peat from Enviropro in NSW as the 15L blocks are too big and Nature’s Head recommend cutting the larger brick down.

Hey Guys, some partially negative feedback from a "urine separating" toilet user. This is probably the best Natures Head how to video I have seen. BUT it does a disservice to people researching "urine separating" toilets, if I watched this it would put me off switching to "urine separating" which we all know is so good compared to the old cassette toilets. All compost toilets are "urine separating" toilets and there are cleaner and easier options out there. It takes me all of 5min to empty and reset my solids container, no mess, no fuss, no mixing compost medium. We have tried a number of toilets, and now use a Trelino Evo. The type that has a bag liner in the solids container. When it's time to empty just tie off, lift out and dispose off, and you're done. But the biggest bit of info I would like to point out, human solids takes 6-9 plus months to safely compost. You did mention if you're out in the bush, no need to bury the waste. I know the solids does not smell, and looks ok, BUT it is still unsafe human waste and after only 2-3 weeks nothing is composting. In reality no one os actually composting anything in urine separating toilets. I think manufacturers calling them "composting" gives people a false sense the waste if safe after a few weeks. Its not. Great channel and great entertaining / informative videos. But personally I think as good as this Natures Head video is, if someone doesn't realise there are easy simple cleaner urine separating toilets out there, this video would put them off buying one. After all who would want to go through the process you showed out on the lawn of a caravan park ? and I know people say, then just use the caravan park toilet, but then that defeats the luxury of having a toilet in your van.

I recently bought a Cuddy (from Compo Closet) and have been using it for just a few days, so I’m still in the learning stage. I’m bloody loving it so far, and seeing how the Nature’s Head works has made me really happy for having my Cuddy which (if my guess is correct) was designed and made in response to some of the shortcomings of the Nature’s Head. Thanks Miriam and Chris - great video! Lots of good info and tips. We're two full timers using a Nature's Head for the last 3 years. When we started out the coir bricks were 9 litres. Now they're 15 litres. I was interested that you use the full 15 litre brick with 2.5 litres of water - which obviously works OK. I have (annoyingly) been trying to approximate 9 litres. I have also noticed the "stringyness" in the coir gets tangled in the mixer ends. Recently our compost became so heavy (after only one week) that the washer and surclip on the left end of the turner became dislodged and the turning arm popped out altogether. I suspected the stringy bits in the coir may be the problem. How do you deal with them? Do you remove them as much as you can? Do you think cutting them up a bit might help? And just one other question ... an American NH user video I've seen uses the broken up coir brick dry - no water at all added and he does not use any composting spray medium either. Makes me wonder ... what do you think?

Great vid thank you for taking the time to run through everything in such an entertaining way. We are in the process of choosing either cassette or an OGO in an Urban van being delivered over here to NZ. Just to clarify a comment below by another viewer in NZ - there is still some doubt as to whether composting toilets can be included in the new NZ self containment certification (so not quite illegal yet if at all ) The grey area seems to be the ability to remove the toilet completely which currently contradicts the ruling that to be self contained the pan has to be secured to the caravan or motorhome floor. I believe this was drafted as a rule to stop backpackers being able to store a porta potty under their bed to obtain a cert then going out and just crapping in the bushes anyhow. Gut feeling is that they will need to change the terminology to reflect the use of the composting technology. I really do hope so as i seriously want to add this but cant risk not getting the self containment cert as we want to be able to free camp so will tread water for a while before we decide. Thanks again - great watch.

Oh wow!! I get it but yes they definitely need to elaborate on the rules. It would be terrible if they aren’t allowed. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for you guys 🙌🏼

So informative seeing this part of the process. Seeing this as well as the other composting toilet requirements has convinced me to stick with the standard cassette. As always thanks for all your efforts putting these videos together.

We need to reiterate you don’t have to wash and clean it every time. Some people can go for a year or more without cleaning it. It’s personal preference but if you don’t wash it the good bacteria help speed up the process in the next batch 👍🏼

Do your self a favour research urine separating toilets like the Trelino Evo or Separett Tiny, Sun-Mar. They have bag liners in the solids container. No mess, no fuss. Takes me all of 4-5min to empty our solids, just tie off the bag, lift out and put in the bin. No cleaning, no washing etc.

That's why i bought the Ogo toilet. Besides the fact that it had much smaller footprint, You don't have to remove the entire toilet to clean out the poop bucket, cause its seperate.

An obvious question but can you put biodegradable paper in the poo section 33:48 instead of placing in a seperate bag.

Hi, great vid & super informative. As an occasional 4wd'er, need a toilet for some camping areas we plan to stay at (tent camping with missus & our 8yo girl). In your opinion, would you still recommend a compost over cassette toilet? Thanks, keep camping well. Cheers

Wow, that was thorough and very informative. Thank you. Now, tell me...camper triler - are they suitable for a camper trailer? Got to lug out the chemical toilet, so what about one of these - can I lug it out and setup some pipe for the fan, have a base for it to sit on etc.? Does that sound feasible?
@AussieDestinationsUnknown Жыл бұрын
Umm I don’t see why not. It would take up a bit of room though?
@MiniLuv-1984 Жыл бұрын
@@AussieDestinationsUnknown Thanks. You guys having first hand experience, so I guessed something may jump out for you rendering it unusable in the camper trailer situation. I currently carry a pota potti, so it can replace the PP. I'll just need to look around and get one that will fit the existing space. Cheers, and thanks again.

I appreciate the insights on using compost toilets guys, but I wanted to share our experience with a different system in our RV. The problem with this type of toilet as mentioned in the video requires the entire assembly to be removed and hosed out, which can be a bit of a hassle-plus, who really wants to be carrying around human excrement for long periods? In our RV, we use a Sun-Mar compost toilet. There's no need to turn handles or levers, or wait for the poop to break down. The system uses bags that can be easily knotted and thrown straight into general public bins (just as the doggy bag) and it has the jug for liquids too. It’s much more convenient for those who value simplicity and quick maintenance while traveling. It might be worth considering for anyone looking for an easier option.

Just a quick side note that Yates spray warning is "DO NOT ALLOW PRODUCT TO GET INTO DRAINS, SEWERS, STREAMS OR PONDS." does this create an issue disposing or dumping of the toilet.

Thanks for this. We have a Nature's Head in our van as well. We are getting a compost smell where the vent exits the van and sometimes in the van. Not a No.2 smell but compost and sometimes we can smell it when sitting outside. Any ideas what we may be doing wrong or is this normal?

It’s normal to have a slight compost smell. But anything strong could mean your mixture is too wet. ☺️
