great and would you recommend rings to be set at for a 305 sbc and by the way your videos are great I'm 19 and doing my first motor build your a big help
@josaljo17 жыл бұрын
The 305 V6 has a top ring clearance of .017 to .027 and the second compression is .015 to .025 inches. If you meant 350 V8 then the gaps are .010 to .020 top ring, .013 to .025 second ring, and .015 to .055 for the oil rings. The 305 V8 is the same as the 350.
@michaelkuneman51357 жыл бұрын
+Josaljo Won yes a 305 Chevy and so the oil ring is .015 to .025 and so if I did both in the middle would that be good like say for the oil ring do .020 would that be good?

It is .015 to .055" for the oil rings .020 would be fine either way.

Staying up top too long will taper cylinder, and cause compression loss at high rpm. I stay even and ridge won't hurt anything even if not reamed as far as old timer taught me. Also a tooth brush works fine to clean stones and will never damage stones.
@markkrause35695 жыл бұрын
The liquid wrench lubes the cylinger alot and takes a long time to hone a cylinder. I was taught to use solvent insted and it will hone alot faster.
@josaljo15 жыл бұрын
The idea is to keep the hoing stones clean. Any thin liquid will work.
@JT-qf4it7 жыл бұрын
Care must be taken when using a flat stone to de-glaze a cylinder. You can take off too much material if using a course stone. A flex hone is much more forgiving and gives a better cross hatch pattern. Make sure you clean all material from cylinder after honing.
@markrich32716 жыл бұрын
Great video. Can I give you a suggestion. Rather than liquid wrench and water use diesel fuel. Ive found it to clean and cut easier and the oil from the diesel give a great finish.
@josaljo16 жыл бұрын
Diesel fuel definitely does a good job, my problem is trying to get rid of it when I am done.
@713vdubz7 жыл бұрын
There is some little rust on my cylinder walls (junkyard block) would it be fine to hone it till the rust comes out or just get the crosshatch surface on there and call it good??
@josaljo17 жыл бұрын
If you can get a clean cross hatch surface with no pitting and the bore measures within specs I would use it.

@rholds19736 жыл бұрын
Hi Jo, Just wondering if i do hone my engine, do i need to buy a new set of piston and rings? Or just use the oem?
@josaljo16 жыл бұрын
You need to measure the bore because it has worn and you have to get new rings Pistons if good can be reused. Your question means you have not done a lot of this so do all the reading you can on rebuilding engines before you start. Dimensions in this area are CRITICAL. If the engine is going to run right or at all.

@josaljo15 жыл бұрын
No, get it bored .005 or whatever you need for the new piston and rings. This is for deglazing and preparing the bore so new rings will seat properly.

does your motor burn any oil now ? I used that method on my motor and it burns about a quart after 500 miles and it just a tiny 4 cylinder
@josaljo17 жыл бұрын
My motors do not burn oil. Honing is a decision that is made after blueprinting the old parts. If they are found to be out of round (cylinders) then boring, not honing may be what is needed. Honing or crosshatching gives the cylinders a textured surface so the rings can seat better and have no burning of oil.

just one question I've always washed the cylinders with dish soap and dryed them with air then wiped them with oil as not to rust and corrosion resistance.
@josaljo17 жыл бұрын
Thats perfect, when I do it with the solvent its the same thing just a little stronger. You want to gap the rings with no oil in the cylinder though. Or you wont get a true reading on the gap. That why I use a very thin oil or wipe them dry.

Not a good idea because the rings are already worn and you will cause them to wear even more to adjust to the honed cylinder.

Can improperly seated rings and glazed cylinders cause a misfire under load? The reason I ask is because I have a rebuilt 302 in a 94 f150 and it runs erratically under load and my compression is between 100-110 dry and 105-140 wet. I'm afraid that I didn't break it in peoperly

Heck with those stones you don't know what grit they are and they wear fast. Here's what you do, get some two sided foam tape they use for car molding, preferably thick otherwise you have to double up, cut the lengths to match the stones, tape it were the stones go. Then cut strips of wet and dry sandpaper, get any grit you choose, and tape that to the foam tape. Keep oiled while honing and the sandpaper will not clog up. It's a bit time consuming changing out the paper and the tape, but this way you can choose any grit you want from start to finish. Btw, be sure to get that 45 degree cross hatch pattern on those cylinders.
@paintnamer64034 жыл бұрын
The cross hatch pattern is to low of an angle,look at the piston ring manufactures web site they tell you low angle retains too much oil on the walls and too steep the oil control ring will wipe off too much oil. Your hone job is better than not doing it.

@curtis500plumton5 жыл бұрын
That is not a proper hone. You NEED to use an actual engine hone as in a Sunnen type hone - This flex hone will not true any irregularities within the bore, a Sunnen hone has a macro and micro adjustment - for a SBC to run the proper hone through it I can do the entire set of 8 in 45 minutes. With a 45 degree cross hatch pattern.

@Moparmaga-15 жыл бұрын
Yes if you pull a spring loaded hone like that it will either beat the shit out of your deck before you get it out. Properly done its stopped toward the top and squeeze the arms together. Other then that the small marks won't hurt the cylinder. If your building a motor that It could hurt performance, it wouldn't be done like this anyways

@josaljo17 жыл бұрын
When you pull the drill out of the cylinder, you do it just before the drill stops so you do not get scratches in the top edge of the cylinder.
