This video helps cover content related to the 2017 National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) Master Automobile Service Technology (MAST) Required Supplemental Tasks - Tools and Equipment:
1. Identify tools and their usage in automotive applications.
2. Identify standard and metric designation.
3. Demonstrate safe handling and use of appropriate tools.
4. Demonstrate proper cleaning, storage, and maintenance of tools and equipment.
5. Demonstrate proper use of precision measuring tools (i.e. micrometer, dial indicator, dial-caliper).

I just found your digital caliper video and enjoyed it immensely. I bought my Mitutoya 30 or so years ago to measure the valve adjusting shims for my Honda CBX motorcycle. The CBX has an air cooled transverse 6 cylinder, 24 valve DOHC engine. My digital caliper helped me keep the valves perfectly adjusted to factory specs. It doesn’t have the thumb screw, which would be nice. It does measure to ten thousands of an inch, i.e., 0.0000. It has the same notched depth part. It cost me $100.00, which seemed a lot of money, but worth it for me. Now Harbor Freight sells digital calipers for $10! Surely not as accurate? I never worked in the trades, just telecommunications, data communications and computer operations.

There is another way that can be measured with calipers. At 6:45 in your video. If you turn the caliper upside down compared to how you hold it at 6:45. There is another surface with which you can measure with( on the back side of the caliper). I do not know if managed to explain what I meant. And i love your videos, they are really good.

Don't reset if there is no 0.00 on display. First open jaws, clean them, close again and if there isn't 0.00 then reset it with "zero" button. My mitutoyo doesn't like big acceleration so I always use wheel for opening and closing jaws in order to get precise measure.

Just out of curiosity, what is the step on the bottom of the depth gauge extension rod for? Just something to help measure into smaller holes?

I do not know for sure, but I suspect you are correct; smaller holes. Thanks for your feedback.

My Caliper has to be so smooth that it slide down without pushing it and I wouldn't use oil because it will attract dirt. Only clean it with a reg. And I would recommend to make the copperplate unbowed.

I assume it is for reaching into smaller holes, but I really do not know for sure.

You already measured the thickness at 12.7mm and when you used the depth gauge you got 12.83mm but it should have been the exact same measurement. You’re not taking accurate measurements at all with those calipers

Junk. Don't buy it if you need it to be spot on . Get the EZ CAL if you don't want to pay for the high end caliper
