Straight to the point. Easy to follow. Best of all the videos out there on the task. Hopefully the kid got a kickback from mom and dad.

Unscrew the inside wall where everyone is taping the chip to and pull that plastic inner wall part out. Behind that plastic part is the circuit board that senses the chip. There are three wires plugged into that board, a Purple wire, a Black/Red wire, and an Orange/Gray wire. Who here knows the correct combination to splice those wires together, to bypass the chip altogether?

That is a good question. Keep in mind that your fridge keeps count of the days and gallons of water you use. and it will warn you and stop the water flow if you don't take action. The bypass chip is the one communicating with the circuit board you are talking about and letting the water flow without interruption. By splicing the wires together the display might not work and the water could stop as well.

Thanks for the tutorial! Most video's don't show you how to remove the front panel to block out the word NOT.

One HUGE problem! Do NOT unplug *anything* with the power cord connected OR the panel showing ANY signs of LED or display action! You risk a REAL problem of 'DC voltage spikes' into your board or beyond! You CAN "TOAST" your board or remote sensors/detectors with SPIKES that just take a "instant" "of bad timing and/VOLTAGE applied to the wrong PINS! *ALWAYS* be SURE equipment is disconnected and powered down! first! The component you TOAST may be "obsolete" or perhaps is no longer made? Your fridge is now ready for the trash damp!

all it takes is cutting the whole damn computer out and wiring straight to the compressor with a ranco etc controller. (and various leads to light/fans). ive hacked 1000 dollar window units this way too, so if ya see one on the side of the orad grab it and fix it or find a buddy that is technically inclined. its pretty simple.

How do you know if it's actually filtering the water, if it thinks it's a bypass filter and you're just blocking the word "not"?
@ionicaw7489
@ionicaw7489 2 жыл бұрын
If a chip is not detected water would shut off. A Bypass chip let’s the water running continuously while the dispenser calls for water, and that is exactly why we need that chip. You can theoretically use any type of filter if you manage to get a watertight connection while the bypass chip is installed. A bypass filter is just a piece of plastic and water does not go inside of it and it can be used for years (no deposits inside the filter to restrict the water flow) A filter with the chip or without the chip does have ports so the water will flow trough and it is recommended to be replaced. Otherwise the flow of the water will be reduced when the filter will get partially plugged from the very small particles found in the water. Hope that helps.

Right, but make sure you put the date on the new filter or on your calendar when it's time to change it. Six months or less if you have a big family

Are the chips in the bypass filters different from the chips in the water filters? If not, then what's the point of blacking out the "not filtering" sign? If the chips are the same, then theoretically the "not filtering" light shouldn't come on.
@v37300

They look the same but the fridge knows the difference between a bypass filter and a regular filter. If you use an RPWFE, after 6 months you will get notified every time the water dispenser is used to replace the filter and few months later the dispenser will be disabled unless you change the filter with a new RPWFE one. If you install an RPWF filter the dispenser will be disabled after a few seconds you install it. This is the reason you use the bypass chip. You will not get errors except the "Not Filtering" message. The difference between an RPWFE and a RPWF filter is the chip and the extreme price difference. So why not using a less expensive filter that does the same. Some people have reverse osmosis systems connected to the water line and they do not want the fridge to filter that water. This the purpose of tbe bypas filter.

@@v37300 Once the 6 months is up, and the error message comes on, can't I just reset the filter's timer on the door, to fool the fridge into thinking it's a new filter? That would be the purpose of taping the chip to an aftermarket new filter. Or, are the chips different in each OEM cartridge?
@v37300
@v37300 3 жыл бұрын
@@gregsewell4259 you can't do that. It is exactly as some printers that have chip on cartridges. If you refill the cartridge with toner the printer still recognizes the cartridge as empty. On some printers you need to go through 5 sets of cartiges before you can use the first old set. I do not know how many filters (chips) a GE refrigerators can store before resets its memory.
@ioanw972
@ioanw972 3 жыл бұрын
That is exactly right. Each chip is stored into the fridge's memory. the bad part is that even if you don't use the water dispenser much, you will still get the 6 months message.That being said if you tape the chip from an 6 month old filter on a new RPWF filter the fridge will recognize the chip as being 6 months old and you will get the same message and pretty soon it will stop flowing water through the filter even if its a brand new one. This will only work with the bypass chip, you will not get the 6 month reminder but depends on the amount of water you have been using, the water flow will decrease when using the dispenser and then you will have to replace the filter but not the by-pass chip.
