When I first seen the title I thought "gawd not another firesteel video" was I sure glad I clicked by the end, you managed to provide a few unique tips and successfully challenge one of the most common firesteel techniques. Great job!

After trying 20 minutes to start a small fire without success and I said "omg I've got a looong way until I get >0% chance to survive out there", I googled and spotted this video. And on 1:20 was the most valuable info ever! Needless to say, I went straight to try again, and I succeeded with the 1st trial. Omg the power of info!!!

Excellent Demonstration Lilly! I totally agree with you on your technique. I also love that you were using the scraper that comes with the firesteel so efficiently. i like to save the lint from the dryer to keep in a tin for emergencies. it's kinda cheating, but it works great!

Great demonstration of what techniques work best for different tinders. Thanks for that. +1 for Light My Fire ferro rods - great product, the striker works fine (no need to grind the back of the knife) and has a built-in emergency whistle.

Hi Lilly, I got a new Schrade knife today and it came with the firesteel and scraper and a sharpening stone. Carbon steel 1/4" thick blade SCHF36 $30. and you just showed me how to use the firesteel and I got it to make many sparks. Thank you so much. love you, Nimrod

Lilly.. I always enjoy watching your videos! One variable for you on fire steel/ferro rods is whether the ferro rod is hard or soft. A soft fire steel will have more magnesium in it and the sparks will burn longer and hotter than ones struck from a harder fire steel, giving more options to technique and tinders. Thanks for the video.. Shad

Hi Lilly. If you put a little of that magnesium in the middle of the pine nettles the flash will ignite the nettles. they just have a low flash point.

they have a high flash point* high temps to ignite .... gasoline=low flash

Great Video. A simple but often overlooked part of firesteel technique. If the sparks aren't getting close enough to the tinder, you won't get fire. You are right on. Great job!

Finally a video on fire steel that shows one the best method to use with the steel to get the best spark and actually what forest products to use to light it rather than relying solely on carrying around 400 cotton balls or blocks of magnesium

Another great video Lilly . Because of the abundance of pine, you should be able to find "fat lighter". Another excellent fire starter, especially if you have a lot of wet or damp wood.

I've seen feathering done to make a firestick for once the tinder is lit but never used as the tinder. Great idea.

I like the way you used your firesteel striker to shave off fat wood and birch bark. nice and saves your knife edge. I do use the back f my knife for this but this method (striker) is also great.
