I had a maintenance guy at the water treatment lab I work at pipe in natural gas instead of the nitrogen and mis-label both valves them incorrectly. The protocol in our lab is if there is a small fire in a contained beaker is to close the sash and decrease the air volume to starve it of oxygen. Well, some amateur lab technician throught it would be a good idea to use he dry nitrogen to extinguish a small isopropanol ph testing solution fire. Unbeknownst to him, the nitrogen and natural gas lines were switched and caused a huge methane fire on the Hood.

THAT is an *epic* failure!

Supreme Science after it was all over and the lab technician got fired, it was really funny. Our hoods there have fire suppression systems in them for bigger fires, and he didn’t actuate that, so the whole hood, ducting, vent gas scrubber, and the exhaust fan needed to be replaced.

@@johnanders8861 I wouldn't have fired him. I just invested $80,000 in someone. To fire someone and risk that happening again nah xD. Equipment can always be replaced cx.

There are also tabletop fume hood units suitable for amateurs and small labs.

Where does it disppurce the toxic air?
@SupremeScience6 жыл бұрын
The air is sent into a filter containment unit, which is then ejected at high velocity into the atmosphere!
