Don't understand what the driver is for. Why can't you just spin the helicoils in without it

...Thanks,...that's the exact kit I just bought to replace the threads on the lower half of the mechanical fuel pump on my 1959 TR3A Triumph....After replacing the diaphragm a few times over the last 52 years, the treads were getting 'loose' ....Ethanol in modern gasoline means replacing the diaphragm quite often, so good threads are a must....The stainless won't wear as fast as the original aluminum, and, even though it's not recommended, I am going to set the Heli-coils in with a dab of blue locktite paste......John, (west coast, Can.)

Can I put a helicoil into an aluminum threading without drilling it out? The threads are good but I want to put in the helicoil to prevent it from stripping, or do I need to drill out the old threads regardless?

You should really drill out the old threads and tap new ones to fit the exterior threads of the helicoil. It’s a tight enough fit when done properly, I don’t think you’d be able to force the helicoil any other way. Keep in mind that the thickness of the wall of the helicoil is what you are accounting for when you drill it out. 🧰🛠🙂

A Heli-Coil is an outside thread-inside helical thread coil. It cannot simply be installed in a random hole. Most Heli-Coil kits come with a pilot drill bit that is matched to the Heli-Coil tap. Drill out the remains of the stripped hole with the supplied bit, tap the new threads with the supplied tap, thread in the supplied Heli-Coil with the supplied insert tool. I also recommend coating the outside of the Heli-Coil with Thread-Locker so that when the bolt is removed in the future it does not unwind the Heli-Coil along with it. (I've seen it happen) Good Luck!

@@joelopez7459 I used blue. I also waited for it to set up before inserting the bolt so the thread locker wouldn't bond the bolt to the coil.
