A really popular hive tool now is the tool designed by Kent Williams (sometimes listed as a KW hive tool) which combines the traditional tool with the j hook. Also the nail puller hole can be used to hang the tool on a nail or peg.

I always tell new beekeepers to hold their hive tool with the sharp end in until they know if they are a "swatter" or until they stop being a "swatter." I saw a guy get a real deep cut on his hand from his hive tool trying to swat a bee that was about to sting him.

@@blakechasteen I hold it anyway that works while I'm working; that's just advice I give to new beekeepers. But yes, for new beekeepers having the sharp or prying end in, and the bent or scraping side out is a good idea.
