Where can you by these compound from? Also, have you used Skerpers compound before? Different companies change the grit by the colour so gets confusing...

Great video, thanks. Can i add a little? :) before shopping for strops, you can usually pic up paddle strops on ebay but you may end up bidding against collectors or craftsmen. It is real cheap to make them as you can pick up odd shape bits of veg tan leather like off cuts from ebay for great prices and also tailor your strop to your needs. For example, my field strop is a little smaller than yours and i backed it onto Balsa wood, it keeps the weight down and balsa being so soft has a natural spring to it. Then i have a larger carved paddle strop from an old (i think) Mahogany table leg, its great and looks nice but its heavy and stays at home. Really only limited to what suits you, all you need is contact adhesive, leather and something to back it to, but make sure what ever you back it to is extremely flat, as close to perfectly flat as possible.

+pai pai Hey pai pai, thank you for your input. I have many hand made strops and they work fine!. Ebay auctions is not really an option as the shipping costs are over $20 to the netherlands most of the time and we have very high custom declarations. I owe these 2 strops to Virtuovice who had send them with a knife I bough from him.

We always come by boat. I haven't been near to the border of sweden yet but I want to go there in the future as well as the far north of norway. I have been in the erea of Gautestad, Odda and Rauland. This year we've been to Voss near Bergen. I think this erea was one of my favourites because of it's ancient feel and the rugged mountains.

The west coast and the fjords are very nice. The north is also beautiful. It is something very special to go there in the summer and experience the midnight sun. Lofoten is popular. The boat trip with Hurtigruten is a good way to see the north if you don't drive car.

Groeten, Julien
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 6 жыл бұрын
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 6 жыл бұрын
+Julien Pronk kijken en voelen hoe het mes scheert blijft altijd een goede test. Als je goed luistert kan je ook aan het papier horen hoeveel weerstand het mes heeft tijdens het snijden

Dutch Bushcraft Knives Thanks Maarten! Nogmaals dank!

I recently bought a Nord Crown Turist and really want to keep the razor sharp edge that it came with. Is there a technique for curved blades?
@jdisdetermined
@jdisdetermined 2 жыл бұрын
There are many different solutions. You could use something small, like the Lansky sharpener with the strop accessories. I’ve had great results with that. Or make a custom strop to fit the curve of the blade.

You said earlier that King waterstones don't sharpen CPM3V very well, but will the Naniwa 1000/3000 grit combination stone sharpen it well? If I combine this with a strop, will it sharpen premium steels like elmax and CPM3V to hair shaving sharp?
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 жыл бұрын
+Frederik Kjaer the combination stones are the cheaper and softer line of naniwa focused on starters. for most common kitchen knife steels it will be ok but for cpm3v not so great sadly

im in the process of making a strop, a second nicer one actually. i have enough leather to make it smooth side on top and rough side on other side. i sanded the rough side up to 400grit and it came out very uniform with very short fuzz and acts just like suede. what i want to know is should i just make it with smooth side only? or rough side only? or both? what works besy for you guys smooth or fuzz? it will be for my home and to strop my folding knives and my mora carbon black. please help! smooth, rough, or smooth and rough?!

Dutch Bushcraft Knives i figured after watching the video. i ended up making it 2 sided one rough and other smooth. i got some emery black compound for the rough side and some finer white compound for the smooth. i am looking into getting some bark river black and white! Expensive though 😵 i think first im going to get some flexcut gold compound for the smooth side since i heard good things about it. have you ever heard of it? im just getting started with all this so im learning as i go. i have to say though just stropping new knives gets them from sharp to hair shaving sharp! crazy. im still learning on how to sharpen with whetstones and diamond sharpeners...it def is an art and a science too it. i love it though and i started my collection of knives after watching your videos! at least my mora carbon black was because of your videos since i never would have heard of mora if not for you two. keep up the videos! good day

Stropping really is the key to achieving and maintaining a razor sharp edge. You can put an amazing mirror edge onto any knife with stones alone but if you really want that final 10%, you have to strop the knife. Also, a strop is invaluable when it comes to maintaining that sharp edge. After using your knives a lot, you can still have a mirror polished bevel that looks great but the apex just doesn’t cut like it used to. That’s when stropping comes into play. With a good strop and some good quality compounds, you can keep a razor sharp edge on your knives for much longer even though you’re actually sharpening the knives far less often. I’ve been telling people to buy a strop even before they buy any stones or any sort of sharpening system. Some people don’t really have the inclination to learn how to fully sharpen their knives but if all they buy is a strop, they can have their knives professionally sharpened and then use nothing but the strop to maintain that professional edge for a pretty long time.
