How to use a light meter Sekonic 758 - explain it to me like I'm 5 years old

For L-858 users, there is a "Modify Current Midtone" button. Using that gives the user a graphical interface for placing the measured and memorized tones. I'm now a digital shooter who still hand meters and have profiled my Canon 5DM3 to the meter. Having done this, your method provides precision in spot metering. I think this is the best tutorial I have seen on how to use these advanced meters. Thank you!

@ricklincoln Hello, with the L-858 isn‘t it faster if you meter the Highlight and the shadow and something in between, put all in memory and push average? Is the same, or? Is the average not the mid tone?and the result of average you put in your camera.

@@olympusfotograph when you average with this light meter, the average value obtain is always in the middle( you will get same number of stopes above and bellow the middle grey or average value). I do not want that. I want to place my tones in a specific zone. yopu technique might work if the scene that you are photographing has the same dynamic range as your sensor/ film emulation. if it exceeds it, than you have to protect the shadows and bring the highlights down with a nd grad filter.

I tried diff. things and i found it out. Is another cool approach and i appreciate your video very much. Thanks for showing it. :-))

Hi, I have a question regarding spot metering at night. Are you able to meter in aperture/shutter priority modes some dark elements (e.g. not lit street), I often have e.u. errors and it works fine only in EV mode for me. Do you experience similar behavior? I rarely get ss slower than 1/2 in aperture priority mode (with f1.4) which is strange to me since it still can meter this dark spots in EV mode

yes, unfortunately a light meter can only be that much sensitive. reflective Ev is between 1 to 24.4; or 0.63 to 190,000 LUX ; or 0.10 to 180,000 FC

Nice video . I just wondering how to measure for camera like fx3 and a7siii which second native iso is 12800?

the max iso value for this light meter is 8000. so u can use iso 6400 and than do mental math. ( there is only 1 stop difference between iso 6400 and 12800 so it should not be that difficult).

Still complicated ;) I'll stick to in camera metering on my Me Super, phone app and my Canon Eos 30. Can't justify paying so much money for this device since I only shoot few rolls a year. The rest of my photography is digital, so don't have to worry about metering and just enjoy taking photos.
