For me, as a 67-year-old beginner, your video about using the metronome is one of the best explanations I've ever seen on KZbin! Thank you very much! Best regards from Germany!

Excellent tips, very helpful step-by-step guidance, especially on setting boundary and taking metronome off eventually.

I'm still hard at work going through all of my favourite pieces and concentrating on lifting my fingers after I play the notes. It's made a world of difference in clarity and evenness of how all the pieces sound. I've been applying this technique to the Solfeggio you you play in this video. I didn't realize just how uneven the piece must have sounded to other people when I played it. Lifting the fingers really highlights the spots where keys aren't being held down for their proper value. In the Solfeggio there were a lot of keys I was skimming over a bit too quickly when playing fast and consequently the sound was too soft which made the Solfeggio sound more uneven than it really was. There is a famous trill at the end of Chopin's Nocturne Op 9 No 2, and I've discovered that making a point of lifting my fingers after I play each key makes the trill sound very even and faster than I'm actually playing it. There are a lot of helpful suggestions of how best to practice this trill but lifting the fingers high after playing the keys simplifies the entire process by lightyears. Starting off slowly is an intralegal part of learning to play this trill evenly but as long as the fingers are lifted after playing each note the trill will be even and it will sound even. I am forever in your debt for this key piece of information which you presented in an earlier video.

UPDATE: The technique of training my fingers by lifting them high and quickly off the keys is truly helpful but don't try this while playing fast or tension will set in. I also discovered that learning how to play on the pads of my fingers instead of the tips helped me produce a warmer and much more even tone. My big breakthrough in playing both scales and arpeggios faster and clearer came when I discovered the importance of the index finger as a pivot point. It's not always a big pivot point but it's super strategic. The moment I press the second key of a scale or arpeggio with my index finger, my thumb is already moving into position to play the fourth key of the scale. For a long time I practiced just playing the first four notes of the scale making sure that as soon as the second finger pressed the key down that my thumb was moving into position to play the fourth note. The thumb does not have to be forced or stretched to move past the second finger it just needs to be prepared slightly and that's all it takes to get the thumb to land an the fourth key quietly. I also practice just using the thumb and the second finger by themselves; as soon as the second finger plays the thumb has to gently but quickly slide by it. I don't play the third note with my third finger, instead I keep practicing just using my thumb and second finger. The thumb needs to learn that it can it can land on a key as softly as the other fingers that's why it has to move quickly past the second finger. I make a point to prepare the thumb slightly but deftly so that it knows where it's supposed to go but I never, never try to force it or stretch it under my hand in preparation. Just practice getting the thumb past the second finger quickly and it will get past the third finger exactly when it's supposed to. This technique works just the same with arpeggios. All the way up the scale on the piano, every time the second finger plays a key get the thumb past it as quickly as possible without stretching the thumb too far. I would not have gone to the trouble to belabor this point to the extent that I have if it didn't produce such positive results. I love all the information I get from this channel because it really makes me think about the actual mechanics required in order to learn to play the piano better than I previously could. You can practice quickly moving your thumb past your second finger on a table top. It's the essence of the movement that is important for the brain to learn and keep. It does take some getting used to, just don't over force the thumb to stretch under the hand or it will cause injury and pain.
