How to use a Ratchet Strap - Rope Services Direct

Using a ratchet strap is a simple process and an easy way to secure most loads. Firstly it is important to check that the 2 pieces of webbing are a matched pair or the same size and with the same safe working loads, this can easily be checked by the information tag/label which should be present on all webbing parts. (if they are not present then you should not use as the SWL is un-identifiable and cannot be used safely).
The ratchet strap comes in two parts, one with the ratchet lever part permanently fixed and one without, both will have fixings on the end for connecting to the vehicle.
Attach the part with the fixed ratchet lever to a secure anchor point, then pass it over the load you wish to secure; next fit the other webbing strap to another secure anchor point (usually directly opposite the first) then thread the end of the webbing through the slot in the ratchet lever, pull through until it is tight making sure there are no twists or kinks or excess slack in the webbing.
Pull the webbing back and hold it against the webbing close to the lever; next by using a back and forth motion move the lever until it will not go any further then lock the lever handle back in place; your ratchet strap should now be very taught over the load. You should always double check the load will not move!
To release the ratchet strap you simply depress the locking catch in the lever handle and allow the webbing to pull through.
Always make sure you do not use ratchet straps over sharp edges as this can result in the webbing being cut through, use plenty of padding for extra protection if necessary.
