How to USE a Reflector: Quick Tip Up on the ROOF

I take to the ROOF of the Loft to demonstrate how to use a 5 way reflector effectively.
There are times where you have to get a shot no matter the time of day and the lighting conditions. In this situation we did not have access to a flash. Instead we had to use a 5 way reflector to, diffuses light, bounce light and reflect light into our subject.
It is really simple to bounce light back into your subject to act as a fill when needed. Its also easy to use the 5 way as a diffuser to cut down on the amount of light that may be hitting your subject.
Ideally if you have an assistant to hold the reflector for you you will be better off. If you dont have one just ask the model to hold it and see how that works.
This has been a QUICK TIP from the ROOF.

A "fill" light source has to come from the opposite end of the key light a.k.a. from the bottom
@DentargPL
@DentargPL 5 жыл бұрын
@@Leukick In that configuration this is main source of light on the subject, so I would rather call it key light. If sun was shining from the side or the front, then it could be called fill. Just compare lightinig subject from bottom and above in such scenarion (back light by sun) and see which looks natural and which not. It's not my idea, there are planty YT videos on that topic. I've already made that mistake, and it was not pleasing for my subject.

This is good for Jared's fans who maybe have never had any experience with reflectors. Not everyone has a wealth of experience before they pick up a camera and start dealing with these types of issues. As he said, it's a QUICK TIP.

Tip 1: invest a good reflector and not a "pringles" chips 5-way one ... How can you EVER reflect the light in a decent way with a reflector like that? Light "bounces" off at the same angle as incidence ... Pretty hard to create a good lighting pattern with a 5-way IMHO. You only create hot-spots that way ... Your video Jared, with all respect (and yes I'm a fan), states that a 5-way reflector like yours is the best anti-conception into learning reflection to photographers :(

Try moving the reflector to the side or slightly lower/higher so that it's not sending light directly into their eyes - catchlights in the eyes can be caught from a range of angles and you don't have to have the reflector pointed directly at a face for it to be effective. I've never had that problem of reflectors blinding people.

so does this mean if you are using a flash outside then you do the same thing....put the flash on the ground and point it up towards the subject?
@puupipo
@puupipo 11 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you like to shoot. If you do a lot of shoots outside during the day you'll get much more out of a reflector than a speedlight, but if you shoot inside or outside at night a reflector is pretty much useless. Keep in mind though, that if you buy a speedlight you'll probably end up buying light modifiers, stands, radio triggers etc. as well but if you buy a reflector and have patience to wait for the right lighting/weather conditions you can get great light with just the reflector.

Light comes naturally from above, the sun. It looks more natural if you place the reflector high up, the same way you would with a strobe.

@ Andrew Reece: Use the gold during the 'golden hour' light and the silver when you are in very silver or cool light. Basically, this is so you can match your reflected light to the temperature of the ambient light. I personally only use reflectors and not flash. It's cheaper and provides way more impact than flash. Will not work in studio as well, there u may need flash.

If you don't have a wireless flash system, you can also use it to bounce on camera flash to the subject from an angle.

Is it better to bounce light upward on your subject or more perpendicular? I've just started playing with reflectors to fill faces when the subject is back lit by the sun to get rid of "squinty eye" but now that darn reflector is blinding them so how to you properly deal with that? This video seems better titled "What a reflector is for" then how to actually use it so any additional info would be cool. Thanks for sharing!

You can also use the black side to absorb light. This can be very useful if you are shooting in a room with a lot of white surfaces and you don't want the light spill from a flash to bounce from a nearby wall and fill in the shadows. Reflectors can also work as backgrounds for headshots (black or white sides), not perfect but better than nothing.

Black side is used to "flag" light, as in, to kill it off completely. Rather handy if you are trying to control light spill or put your subject in total shadow.

No general rules for this unfortunately, you'll just have to experiment with it yourself. Just remember to use the white side instead of gold or silver because the light is relatively softer reflecting from a white surface and so it should cause less squinting. Experiment with the angles and distances and make the subject look more away from the reflector and you should find a setup that works. Small changes can make a huge difference.

That is not true. If the sun is behind the reflector, yes then it will act as a diffuser and create shade. However, when the sun is in front of the reflector, it will reflect light in a natural way.

But reflector doesn't work the same way as a strobe. A strobe produces light while a reflector reflects light, so if you place the reflector high up all it is going to do is act as a shade.
