This video will show you how to set up and use a self-leveling laser to check sub-grade level and set your floor grades.
I like to use the Topcon RL-H5B self leveling laser for all my jobs.
It's really easy to learn how to use and set up.
I use a self leveling laser, receiver, and grade stick to see how level the sub-grade is so I can set my top of concrete floor grades accordingly.
Most of my concrete floors are an average of 4" higher than the sub-grade.
The easiest and fastest way to check the levelness of your sub-grade is using a grade stick with some kind or ruler on it.
Once your laser is level, it spins a 360 degree laser beam that the receiver picks up. This allows you to use the level laser beam to check and set grades easily.

As always great video Mike! I am in no way a “ grade expert” but have shot a few and your explanation is simple and to the point. The one thing I was taught and keep in mind is Up is Down, Down is Up with the target.

Hi Mike, I just started my concreting company and am still finding it quite tricky quoting projects. If possible, please make a video describing the quoting process. Thank you so much for videos, they’ve helped me out so much 😭💓.

Laser levels are undoubtedly one of the most important tools to come out in the last 30-40 years. If cost is a concern, you just need to remember what you are saving in labor. It took what was always a 2 man job and turned it into a 1 man job. If you’re still using a builders level and not a laser for these kinds of leveling operations, you’re losing money. People tend to get confused on one thing - The laser base is sending out a laser signal at a completely random, but level, elevation. The sensor picks up that random but level elevation and then the real ‘business end’ is the bottom (or top) of the rod. The bottom or top of the rod has to be set on a known elevation and then that elevation can be transferred around the site. Or it can be used as an averaging tool like you showed in the video. Also, you can use virtually anything for a rod. As long as it stays rigid and you can firmly attach the sensor, it’ll work. You could use a tree branch, in a pinch.

Good info, This is one of my most useful tools. It paid for itself in no time. I still see some contractors using a transit once in a while and can't understand why. Maybe old habits are hard to break I guess.

Mike... how do you get your level if you don’t have a foundation wall and your working to forms? Chalk line on boards? Or set the boards to level height?
@MikeDayConcrete
@MikeDayConcrete 3 жыл бұрын
I try to set the forms to height. Sometimes if the form is too high, I will mark it and snap a chalk line on it.

What are you using for a grade stick? The one i bought has a joint that seems to always be in the way.

Measuring up from the dirt must be prefaced by saying there is no elevation requirement on the plans. Also it assumed the dirt was set to the correct grade.

Thanks for the video! What brand/model grade rod do you use? I'm not seeing any good options on Amazon - there are a half-dozen brands selling the same cheap-looking rod.
