Quick and easy way to torque your cam gear bolts, using only your old timing belt! Hope you learn something new!
This video is part of a "Build Series" (see "Playlists" tab for all videos) for my 1998 Rally Blue Pearl RSTi Coupe (Impreza 2.5RS swapped with a EJ205 turbo engine), which is 1 of only 720 sold in the USDM for 1998. This RSTi Build has come a long way and includes a full archive of videos documenting how to: (1) Pull a EJ-series turbo engine, (2) Replace the head gaskets, (3) Add key upgrades to increase long-term reliability, and (4) Restore the interior to OEM specifications.

I used this method to remove and install the cam pulleys on both of the 2.5 SOHC head gasket jobs I have done on my Subarus. Works like a charm.

Hey Luke, Luke here. According to the FSM the final torque spec is 72.4 ft- lbs/ 39 N-m❤

First off you have great content and greatly appreciated. I need to remove the filter inside the banjo bolt behind the driver side cam gears cover on a ej255 engine. Are there any videos on this?

Hey love the videos. I cant find that much information on this subject but I'm building a 2017 wrx fa20dit. I've been told 2 different things. Can you re-use your stock oem cam gears when building fa20dit engine or do you need to replace them with new ones. Also my current engine is very healthy and running strong but building for more power. Thank you for any information you can give me

Hello, your videos are always a big help! I'm installing my cam gears and am doing my timing today, do the marks on the pulley wheels have to be a certain way when installing the cam gears? I have a cam locking tool and understand the wheels have marks to line up when setting the timing so I'm curious if they should be installed in a certain direction?

Do the gears need to be in any specific orientation when putting them back on? Or do you just put them on and aling the marks after they're tight?

is there no Hexagon on the cam for a spanner to go on on this engine? thats how ive done it.

Hello, props to the channel. Question, so I have a knock on my 03 wrx motor and have been afraid that its rod knock or piston slap. I saw a video of another wrx owner that had a very similar knocking sound and it turned out to be a loose cam pulley to his testimony. So I'm wanting to know how to go about checking if my cam pulley bolt is tight while engine is still in car. Thanks

Hi - yes, you can check these with the engine in the car - no problem!

It's most likely a failing timing belt tenioner.

Just use a torque impact wrench and it wont move. I would have a white mark on it anyway if it moved. I don't know why it's necessary to have the belt on. What's with the difference of 22 ft pounds versus 70 ft pounds? I wouldn't go up that far on these bolts. Update: Actually, it's still possible for it to move. I used a mid torque. First two times I went to tighten it, it didn't move (2 to 3 seconds). But the third time it did. When I tried to move it back with a ratchet, it would loosen. So I had to tighten it again with the mid torque. Then I could move it back to its timing mark.

I'm doing my cam seals on an 05 sti, and I wanted to verify that the camshaft alignment pin is larger than the oil holes on the cam gear. So not to have a misalignment.

I just installed my avcs cam gear and somehow misaligned it. Luckily I caught it before putting the motor in the car, the intake valves were hitting the exhaust valves

Do I need to do this before changing my timing belt on a 2000 sohc 2.5rs? Different engine right? Doesn’t apply....? Thanks!

No, I don’t think you’ll need to remove the cam gears. That’s only needed if you need to pull the head or replace the cam seals. 👍

Is there a replacement bolt with a standard hex head instead of the strip prone Allen bolt?

You're supposed to line up those white marks prior to installing the belt and torquing that down!!

clamp the pulley, if it slips you could have a bad day

just buy the tool for thirty bucks on amazon for a cheap knock off company23 one. I did and it worked flawlessly and got my cam bolts on a motor with 350k off no struggle
