Using a torque wrench properly is super simple! All you need to do is look up the torque specification for the bolt in your manual or online.
The correct wheel bolt spec is usually between 86 - 93 lb-feet, but I recommend using Google if you don't know it for your car.
This is the first in a series of "how to" tutorials for beginners. I'm covering all the basics, so don't be afraid to get your feet wet!

I just replaced the upper control arms & ball joints on my Expedition. i did NOT torque my lug nuts. I had tires installed on my Mazda 3 wagon. I have a boat & Boat Trailer repair shop, so I can do routine maintenance on my own vehicles. When I changed the oil & filter, I rotate my ties on the Mazda 3 (and the other vehicles too.) I CURSED THE TIRE COMPANY! For using a torque wrench on the lug nuts. I had to use a breaker bar & a pole for all 20 lug nuts. The air gun got me nowhere.

Hello. So, I "rented/borrowed" a torque wrench from O'Reilly's. Need to do head bolt to 44 ft lbs, plus 90 degrees. Did first 8 on one head to 44, moved dial to 55 so I could add the 90 degrees. Then went to second head. Dialed back down to 44. Busted bolt. Looking at instructions, which I didn't bother to do initially, it says that when resetting wrench, always go back to zero. Is this common knowledge? Because the guy at the store didn't say anything, and I've looked at a couple of videos online that also didn't mention this. Is that why my bolt busted, because it was still set at 55, or was that wrench just faulty?
@revmatchtv

@@steveluera2109 Not sure what you mean by 'resetting' the wrench, but are you actually trying to torque down a cylinder head but you don't have a torque wrench?

I've heard that but never done it. Never haf issues either. Springs wear out from constant expansion and contraction, not from stationary placement. Similar situation: Think about the suspension on a vehicle. A vehicle can sit in a parking lot for 20 years, the springs don't wear out. But use it every single day, eventually the springs wear out (and break).
@sethh8892
@sethh8892 2 жыл бұрын
Also think about valve springs. Valve springs are under constant load, that is not what wears them out. What wears the valve spring out is the constant expansion and contraction of the spring due to the camshaft's lift. Remember, every time the spring expands or contracts the atoms inside realign to form a crystalline structure. And crystals aren't very good at being springs, they tend to fracture and break.

Seriously every single time I ever work on something I over tighten and rip threads out, the worst has been the engine on my 85 cj7. Was changin my water pump got to the last bolt and snap. Took the ear right off the block, in the process now I finding a good torque wrench because I’m rebuilding g a 4.0 to drop into it. The torque wrenches I have now are from harbor freight and they barely click, so it’s easy to over tighten bolts. Looking into the craftsman.

Hey Eric! I'm a great fan of the torque wrench , i use it on nearly every bolt to make sure, the next time I open up the bolt or nut, will loose easily! When i use it on the wheels i turn the steeringwheel a few degrees to the right side of the car so you never hit the fender ;) . I also use to let the wrench click twice because in some cases the wrench clicks but the real tightening torque isn't reached yet, so i proof it again!I don't think you overtorque it when you proof.
@revmatchtv
@revmatchtv 5 жыл бұрын
If you need to click it twice to achieve the desired torque it could be that your torque wrench is out of adjustment. I noticed that an old wrench I had consistently under tightened my bolts. I threw it away.
@DiligentDave1966
@DiligentDave1966 Жыл бұрын
In my opinion, if you regularly work on different types of vehicles, just spend the extra money on a split beam torque wrench. They’re much easier to adjust, and have a 15 degree flex head to help avoid hitting things without an extension. Depending on the length and thickness of the extension, some people claim that it can affect the torque accuracy.
