A video I probably should've made a long time ago. This is for people who are completely new to typewriters. I hope to spark an interest with those who are passing by. Thank you for watching and have a great day!
**I apologize for the links not working at the end of the video. I was unaware KZbin discontinued their annotation option. Find the links below.**

nice video; However, you DON'T need music, the typewriter makes it itself, lovely mechanical music, and the bell every end of line! a relaxing sound to everyone who loves mechanical things :))))

Thanks for the intro! I just got my first typewriter for a bargain and I can't wait to learn this lost artform. There's something especially mesmerizing about watching someone type on an antique typewriter! 😍

Thank you!! Lost in some ways, vibrant in others. I am amazed at how the typewriter is managing to stay afloat in this day and age!! 8-tracks can pick up a few pointers!

The best video I have seen so far on manual typewriters. You explain the functions extremely well! Many thanks from a lady who learnt to touch type on a manual typewriter at college.

Great Video, especially as it features an UNDERWOOD No. 5 typewriter! I acquired my 1924 UNDERWOOD No.5 on June 20, 2019 that had it platen carriage separated from the carriage frame (in other words the typewriter came to me in two separate pieces). I bought it less than 3 miles from home, so there was no shipping involved, and I bought it at a very good price. "Flying by the seat of my pants", and after several attempts, I was finally able to reinstall the platen carriage assembly onto the carriage frame correctly. Its platen rubber is very hard and is missing a small piece of the age drubber, along with the feed rollers having flat spot on them, but amazingly I did get it up and typing very well, even with its ancient, dried-out ribbon! The typewriter is areal beauty, and it has a 3-inch diameter bell mounted outside on the left side of its frame. the bell sounds like a ships bell when it rings, and I have been told that this typewriter was assembled specifically for typing speed competitions. I sure wish that it could talk and tell me about its past! Question: I noticed a few differences between our typewriters, specifically on the back side. Have you had a chance to date the year of manufacture of yours?

I bought a really cheap typewriter and I'm struggling to get paper in. There seems to be a gap that it gets stuck it when im rolling the paper through which stops it from moving. I've managed to slide a smaller piece of paper in but everytime I try a4 it just gets stuck. Am I doing something wrong?

Hey!! I just got my first typewriter. It’s similar to yours but from 1930. I’ve somehow locked the keys so they don’t go all the way up no matter what I do. How do I unlock them??? Thanks so much!!

Probably a broken or missing linkage. A paperclip can fix that.

My first typewriter was a royal quiet deluxe from 1951 that I got 2 years ago and still have. I got it for free from someone in my town, but that’s not even the best part. The best part was the machines condition. I got a free Royal quiet deluxe in mint condition! All I had to do was replace the ribbon, which is the case for pretty much every typewriter. I haven’t had to clean it or repair yet, but I will lost likely clean the keys soon.

Hello there. I have a typewriter issue and was hoping you could possibly assist? I have a webster xl-500 that my cat knocked off my desk. Now the space bar isn’t working correctly. It will only move in the middle of the page and then stops about 3/4 of the way. Also won’t progress at the beginning. Any ideas?

Something got bend or is out of alignment. From a distance I can't tell you what the issue is, sadly. However, make sure that the body panels still align and do not interfere with the carriage. Check to make sure the carriage mountings are not bend.

Hello, I just got an underwood typewriter. On the left side of the face there is a lever with 1-5 options. I cannot find any information what that may be and hope you would share some knowledge. Thank you.

Do you suggest starting out with a mid-century typewriter because it is easier to find parts? I'm quite familiar with mechanical things in general, and I would enjoy the complexity of an older machine, but I don't know if the parts for these are more expensive, and if it is important to have a modest budget for its upkeeping. Thank you for the inspiring video.
@dr.typewriter-venneburgtyp121
@dr.typewriter-venneburgtyp121 2 жыл бұрын
In general, if you find typewriters that are in relatively good condition, the replacement of parts is relatively mute since the machine is fixable as-is. They are not perse similar to cars for example where it's a given replacement parts are a requirement. Typewriters can usually be brought back to life with elbow grease, tools and oil. Earlier machines might be more complex due to their experimental design, but when it comes to a good beginner machine for novice mechanics, start off with an Underwood standard of some sort. Baby-steps!

@@dr.typewriter-venneburgtyp121 Thank you very much. I've seen your videos on the Underwood no. 5, and am quite taken with it. I'm relieved to learn that these machines require work rather than replacements, etc, as I have a minimal budget and try to always repair things myself. Thank you for this very helpful information.

@@rickbritt5506 depending on which typewriter you use, if there is some kind of ruler built in you should line it up and you should be good.

Hi Dean. The tab stops on your L.C. Smith are removable keys. They could've gotten lost over time. I sometimes use paperclips or make one in case I need one.
